Swayambhu Purana

Chapter Three: The Draining of the Great Lake

203 verses, complete. Sanskrit, transliteration, English, Nepali, and a purport.

This is the third chapter of the Swayambhu Purana, and the one that tells how the Kathmandu Valley came to exist. In the age of Viśvabhū Buddha, Mañjuśrī sees the self arisen light shining on a lotus in the middle of a lake, in a place where no one lives and no one can reach it. He travels south from a mountain in the far north, cuts open the hills with his sword, drains the water away, and settles on the ground that appears. The lotus hardens into the hill the stupa stands on, a goddess rises from the drained lake bed, and the first people move in.

Every verse is given in five layers: the Sanskrit, a Roman transliteration you can read aloud, a literal English translation, a Nepali translation, and a purport that explains what is happening and why it matters. Use the buttons below to show only the layers you want. For the narrative alone, keep the purport and turn the rest off. Your choice is remembered as you move between chapters.

athāśoko mahīpālaḥ sāñjaliḥpura āśritaḥ ।
tamarhantaṁ yatiṁ natvā prārthayedevamādarāt ॥ 3.1 ॥

English

Then Aśoka, ruler of the earth, drawing near with folded hands,
bowed to that Arhat ascetic and made this request with reverence:

Purport

The third chapter opens in the outermost frame of all, with Aśoka still seated before Upagupta in the monastery at Pāṭalīputra where chapter two left him. He has been told where Swayambhu is and what worshipping it brings. Now he wants to know about the ground it stands on.

bhadanta śrotumicchāmi tadbhūmi satkathām ।
tatsamyaksamupādiśya saṁbodhayituṁ no bhavān ॥ 3.2 ॥

English

Venerable one, I wish to hear the true story of that land.
May you teach it rightly and awaken us.

Purport

The question is about land rather than doctrine, and it is the one an ordinary listener would have been waiting for. The last two chapters have described a shrine standing in the middle of a lake. How did anyone ever reach it?

iti saṁprārthite rājñā so'rhanyatirmahāmatiḥ ।
upagupto narendraṁ taṁ sampaśyannevamādiśat ॥ 3.3 ॥

English

Thus entreated by the king, that Arhat ascetic of great intellect,
Upagupta, looking upon that lord of men, instructed thus:

Purport

Upagupta is named for the first time in this chapter, which keeps the chain of narrators clear. He is Aśoka's teacher, and he is about to quote the Buddha quoting another Buddha.

sādhu śṛṇu mahārāja yathā me guruṇoditam ।
tathāhaṁ te pravakṣyāmi sarvalokābhivodhane ॥ 3.4 ॥

English

Listen well, great king, as it was told to me by my teacher;
so shall I relate it to you, for the awakening of all the worlds.

राम्ररी सुन, हे महाराज, जसरी मेरा गुरुले मलाई भन्नुभएको थियो;

Purport

The same formula that opens every teaching in this poem. Nobody claims to be the author of what he says.

tadyathātha mahāsattvo maitreyaḥ sa jinātmajaḥ ।
bhagavantaṁ punarnatvā sāṁjalirevamabravīt ॥ 3.5 ॥

English

It was thus. Then the great being Maitreya, son of the Jina,
bowing once more to the Blessed One, spoke thus with folded hands:

Purport

The story drops one frame, back to the Swayambhu hill and the assembly of chapter two. Maitreya is rising again with another question.

bhagavannāvāso'sau mahājalāśrayo hradaḥ ।
kadā bhūmi pradeśo'tra kathaṁ jalāśrayo bhavet ॥ 3.6 ॥

English

Blessed One, that great lake, that dwelling place of waters,
when was there land here, and how did it come to be a lake?

Purport

Maitreya assumes, as anyone would, that land came first and water later. The answer he gets will reverse the order, and it happens to match what geologists say about the Kathmandu Valley floor.

kasya ca samaye deśāgrāmādayaḥ pravarttitāḥ ।
tatsarvaṁ samupādiśyansarvānasmānprabodhayan ॥ 3.7 ॥

English

And in whose time did the country, its villages and the rest, come into being?
Teach us all of this, and awaken us all.

Purport

The second half of the question is about settlement. Maitreya wants to know not only how the valley dried but when people started living in it, which makes this chapter the poem's account of the founding of Nepal.

iti saṁprārthite tena maitreyeṇa sa sarvavit ।
bhagavānstaṁ mahāsattvaṁ sampaśyannevamādiśat ॥ 3.8 ॥

English

Thus entreated by Maitreya, that Omniscient One,
the Blessed Lord, looking upon that great being, instructed thus:

Purport

Request, gaze, answer. The rhythm is by now completely familiar, and the poet relies on it to mark each descent into a deeper frame.

sādhu śṛṇu mahāsattva yadatrābhūtmahītale ।
tatpravṛttiṁ samākhyāmi sarvalokābhibodhane ॥ 3.9 ॥

English

Listen well, great being, to what happened here upon this earth;
I shall relate that event, for the awakening of all the worlds.

राम्ररी सुन, हे महासत्त्व, यहाँ यस भूमिमा जे भयो;

Purport

The Buddha calls what follows an event rather than a teaching. This chapter is the most narrative of the three.

tadyathā bhūvilokānāṁ varṣaṣaṣṭisahasrakā ।
purābhūtbhagavāñchāstā viśvabhūrnāma sarvavit ॥ 3.10 ॥

English

It was thus. When the lifespan of the people of the earth was sixty thousand years,
long ago there was a Blessed Teacher, all-knowing, named Viśvabhū,

Purport

Eighty thousand years in Vipaśvī's age, seventy thousand in Śikhi's, and now sixty thousand. The number has dropped by ten thousand in each chapter, which is the poem's quiet way of counting the ages down toward our own.

dharmarājo munīndro'rhastathāgato vināyakaḥ ।
sarva vidyādhipastāpī saṁbuddha sugato jinaḥ ॥ 3.11 ॥

English

a Dharma-king, a Lord of Sages, an Arhat, a Tathāgata, a Guide,
master of all knowledge, ardent, the Perfect Buddha, the Sugata, the Jina.

Purport

Viśvabhū is the third of the seven Buddhas of the past, following Vipaśvī and Śikhi. The poem is moving forward one Buddha per chapter.

so'nupamānāma pūryāmupakaṇṭhe jināśrame ।
sarvasattva hitārthena vijahāra sasāṁdhikaḥ ॥ 3.12 ॥

English

He dwelt with his companions in a hermitage of the Jina
on the outskirts of the city called Anupama, for the welfare of all beings.

Purport

Anupama means 'without compare'. Each Buddha in this sequence is given his own city: Bandhumatī for Vipaśvī, Aruṇa for Śikhi, and now Anupama.

maitreyo'haṁ tadā bhūvaṁ viśvabhū upāsakaḥ ।
parvatākhyo mahāsattvo bodhisattvo hitārthabhṛt ॥ 3.13 ॥

English

Maitreya, I was then a lay follower of Viśvabhū,
a great being named Parvata, a Bodhisattva devoted to the welfare of all.

Purport

The Buddha names the third of his past selves: Satyadharma in chapter one, Kṣemaṁkara in chapter two, and now Parvata, meaning 'mountain'. The name is well chosen for a chapter about cutting a hill open.

tatra sa bhagavāñchāstā saṁbhāṣayan sudhāṁśuvat ।
saddharmma samupādeṣṭuṁ sabhāsane samāśrayat ॥ 3.14 ॥

English

There that Blessed Teacher, speaking words like nectar,
took his seat in the assembly to teach the true Dharma.

Purport

The teaching scene is set for the third time, in the third age, with the third Buddha. The repetition is the architecture of the whole book.

taṁ dṛṣṭvā bhikṣavaḥ sarve śrāvakā brahmacāriṇaḥ ।
pratyeka sugatāścāpi bodhisattvāścacailakāḥ ॥ 3.15 ॥

English

Seeing him, all the monks, the disciples and the celibate practitioners,
the solitary Buddhas too, and the Bodhisattvas and the cailakas,

Purport

The catalogue begins. Cailakas are ascetics who wear a single strip of cloth, a small detail the poet includes because he is listing every recognisable kind of religious practitioner.

bhikṣuṇyo brahmacāriṇyo yatayo yogino'pi ca ।
triratna bhajanāraktā upāsakā upāsikāḥ ॥ 3.16 ॥

English

nuns and celibate women, renunciates and yogins too,
and laymen and laywomen devoted to the worship of the Three Jewels,

Purport

Women are named in their own categories, as they have been in every assembly in this poem.

evamanye'pi lokāśca saddharmma guṇalālasāḥ ।
bhadraśrī sabhāraktāḥ saṁbuddha darśanotsukāḥ ॥ 3.17 ॥

English

and others too, longing for the virtues of the true Dharma,
delighting in glory and in the assembly, eager to behold the Perfect Buddha,

Purport

The poet grants that some came for the occasion rather than the teaching. Eagerness to see the Buddha counts as a reason to be there.

tatsaddharmmāmṛtaṁ pātuṁ samupetya munīśvaram ।
yathākramaṁ samabhyarcya natvā sāñjalayo mudā ॥ 3.18 ॥

English

came to that Lord of Sages to drink the nectar of the true Dharma,
and worshipping him in due order, bowed with folded hands in joy,

Purport

The nectar image again. It has appeared in every assembly scene of all three chapters.

parivṛtya puraskṛtya samudvīkṣya samādarāt ।
tatsabhāyāṁ samāśritya saṁniṣeduḥ samāhitāḥ ॥ 3.19 ॥

English

circling him and keeping him before them, looking up with reverence,
they drew near in that assembly and sat down with settled minds.

Purport

The same concentric arrangement described in the earlier chapters: a still crowd facing inward with the teacher at its centre.

evaṁ brahmādayaḥ sarve ṛṣayo brahmacāriṇaḥ ।
tīrthikā api sarve tatsaddharmaṁ śrotumāgatāḥ ॥ 3.20 ॥

English

So too Brahmā and all the seers and celibate practitioners,
and all the tīrthikas as well, came to hear that true Dharma.

Purport

Followers of other paths in the audience once more. The poet has now done this in every assembly he has described.

śakrādayo devāśca sarvalokādhipā api ।
grahāstārāgaṇāḥ siddhāḥ sādhyā vidyādharā api ॥ 3.21 ॥

English

Indra and the other gods, and all the guardians of the worlds,
the planets and the hosts of stars, the Siddhas, Sādhyas and Vidyādharas,

Purport

The catalogue lifts into the sky as it always does, and moves through the same ranks in the same order.

sarve'pi te samāgatya bhagavantaṁ yathākramam ।
samabhyarcya praṇatvā tata sabhāyāṁ samupāśrayan ॥ 3.22 ॥

English

All of them, coming to the Blessed One in due order,
worshipped him, bowed, and took their places in that assembly.

Purport

The gods take their places. The poet then comes back down to earth for the rest of the list.

evaṁ ca brāhmaṇā vijñā rājānaḥ kṣatriyā api ।
vaiśyāśca mantriṇo'mātyā gṛhasthāśca mahājanāḥ ॥ 3.23 ॥

English

So too the learned brahmins, kings and Kṣatriyas,
Vaiśyas, ministers and counsellors, householders and men of substance,

Purport

The social order arrives in its usual sequence, from the learned down to the working rich.

śilpino vaṇijaścāpi sārthavāhāśca paurikāḥ ।
grāmyā jānapadāścāpi tathānye deśavāsinaḥ ॥ 3.24 ॥

English

craftsmen and merchants, caravan leaders and townspeople,
villagers and country people, and those living in other lands.

Purport

The list ends with the people who had furthest to travel, and the poet mentions them last in every chapter.

sarve te samupāgatya bhagavantaṁ yathākramam ।
samabhyarcya praṇatvā ca kṛtvā pradakṣiṇānyapi ॥ 3.25 ॥

English

All of them, coming to the Blessed One in due order,
worshipped him, bowed, and made circumambulations,

Purport

Circumambulation performed around a living teacher rather than a shrine. The poem treats the two as the same act.

guru kṛtya puraskṛtya parivṛtya samantataḥ ।
tatsaddharmmāmṛtaṁ pātumupatasthuḥ samāhitāḥ ॥ 3.26 ॥

English

and honouring him as their teacher, keeping him before them, spreading out on every side,
they waited with settled minds to drink the nectar of the true Dharma.

Purport

The assembly is complete and quiet. In this poem the moment before a teaching begins is always described carefully.

tāndṛṣṭvā samupāsīnān viśvabhūrbhagavāñjinaḥ ।
ādi madhyānta kalyāṇaṁ saddharma samupādiśat ॥ 3.27 ॥

English

Seeing them all seated around him, the Blessed Jina Viśvabhū
taught the true Dharma, excellent in beginning, middle and end.

Purport

The oldest of the formulas for the Buddha's teaching, used for the third time in three chapters without variation.

tatsaddharmmāmṛtaṁ pītvā sarve lokāḥ sabhāśritāḥ ।
dharmmaviśeṣamājñāya pratyanandan prabodhitāḥ ॥ 3.28 ॥

English

Drinking that nectar of the true Dharma, all the people in the assembly,
recognising the excellence of the Dharma, rejoiced and were awakened.

Purport

The sermon lands, and in that same instant something happens to the ground.

tasminkṣaṇe mahī sarvā cacāla saparvatā ।
suprasannā diśaḥ sarvā rejuravīndra vahnayaḥ ॥ 3.29 ॥

English

In that moment the whole earth with its mountains moved,
all the directions grew clear, and the sun and the fires shone out.

Purport

The earthquake returns, exactly as in chapter two. There it announced the appearance of the light in the lake. Here it will announce something else, and the assembly does not yet know what.

suradundubhayo nedurnipetuḥ puṣpavṛṣṭayaḥ ।
nirutpātaṁ mahotsāhaṁ prāvarttata samantataḥ ॥ 3.30 ॥

English

The drums of the gods sounded, showers of flowers fell,
and freedom from calamity and great rejoicing spread on every side.

Purport

Drums without drummers and flowers out of a clear sky. The poet is repeating the portents of chapter two almost word for word, which tells a returning reader that another great event has just occurred.

tadvilokya sabhālokāḥ sarve te vismayānvitāḥ ।
śrotuṁ taddhetu sarvajñamudvīkṣya tasthurādṛtāḥ ॥ 3.31 ॥

English

Seeing this, all those in the assembly were filled with wonder,
and gazing at the Omniscient One, waited eagerly to hear the cause.

Purport

The same arrangement as chapter two: the wonder comes first and the explanation second, so the reader learns what happened at the same moment the assembly does.

tadā gaganagañjākhyo bodhisattvaḥ samutthitaḥ ।
udvahannuttarāsaṁgaṁ purataḥ samupāśritaḥ ॥ 3.32 ॥

English

Then the Bodhisattva named Gaganagañja rose,
lifting his upper robe over one shoulder, and came before him,

Purport

Gaganagañja means 'sky treasury', and he is one of the great bodhisattvas of the Mahayana sutras. He plays here the part Ratnapāṇi played in chapter two.

sarvajñaṁ taṁ mahābhijñaṁ dharmmarājaṁ vināyakam ।
viśvabhuvaṁ muniṁ natvā sāṁjalirevamabravīt ॥ 3.33 ॥

English

and bowing to that Omniscient One of great knowledge, Dharma-king and Guide,
the Sage Viśvabhū, he spoke thus with folded hands:

Purport

The titles are piled up before the question, which is how these texts show that a request is being made with proper formality.

bhagavaṁstannaimittaṁ kasyedaṁ jāyate'dhunā ।
tadbhavānsamupādiśya saṁbodhayatu no guro ॥ 3.34 ॥

English

Blessed One, whose is this portent that now appears?
May you teach it and awaken us, O teacher.

Purport

The identical question Ratnapāṇi asked in chapter two, in almost identical words. The poem is rhyming its two great revelations with each other.

iti saṁprārthite tena bhagavānsa munīśvaraḥ ।
gaganagañjamālokya taṁ sabhāṁ caivamabravīt ॥ 3.35 ॥

English

Thus entreated by him, that Blessed Lord of Sages,
looking upon Gaganagañja, said this to the assembly:

Purport

He looks at the questioner and speaks to everyone, as every teacher in this poem does.

kulaputra mahadbhadra nimittamidamācarat ।
tadahaṁ saṁpravakṣāmi śṛṇudhvaṁ yūyamādarāt ॥ 3.36 ॥

English

Son of good family, this that has occurred is a great and auspicious portent.
I shall tell it; listen, all of you, with reverence.

Purport

An auspicious portent rather than a warning. The poem is careful about this distinction each time the earth shakes.

tadyathā triguṇābhijñā mañjuśrīḥ sugatātmajaḥ ।
uttarasyāṁ mahācīne viharati nagāśrame ॥ 3.37 ॥

English

It is thus. Mañjuśrī, son of the Sugata, knower of the three qualities,
dwells in the north, in Mahācīna, at a hermitage upon a mountain.

Purport

And here the chapter's real subject walks in. Mañjuśrī, the bodhisattva of wisdom, living on a mountain in Mahācīna, the Great China of Indian geography, meaning Tibet and the lands beyond. In Nepali tradition this is Wu Tai Shan, the five-peaked mountain long identified as his seat.

tasya bhāryā ubhe jyeṣṭhā keśinī śrīvarapradā ।
vidyā sadguṇa saṁbhartrī dvitīyā copakeśinī ॥ 3.38 ॥

English

He has two consorts: the elder, Keśinī, giver of glory and boons,
upholder of knowledge and true virtue, and the second, Upakeśinī.

Purport

Keśinī and Upakeśinī are named nowhere else in the poem. They will travel with him, take new names, and are remembered in the valley as the two figures who accompany Mañjuśrī in Nepali painting and sculpture.

ekasmin samaye tatra mañjuśrīḥ sadguṇodadhiḥ ।
lokasaṁdarśanaṁ nāma samādhiṁ vidadhe mudā ॥ 3.39 ॥

English

On one occasion there, Mañjuśrī, that ocean of true virtue,
joyfully entered the meditation called Beholding the World.

Purport

A meditation whose name means what it does: looking at the world. This is how the bodhisattva of wisdom finds out what is happening far away, and the whole chapter turns on what he sees.

dhyānadṛṣṭyā dadarśātra mahāhradasaroruhe ।
ratnamayaṁ samutpannaṁ dharmmadhātuṁ jinālayam ॥ 3.40 ॥

English

With the eye of meditation he saw here, on the lotus of the great lake,
the jewelled Dharmadhātu, the abode of the Jina, arisen of itself.

Purport

From a mountain in the far north he sees a light on a flower in the middle of a lake in the Himalaya. Everything that follows in this chapter is the consequence of one moment of looking.

svayaṁbhuvaṁ tamālokya mañjudevaḥ susanmatiḥ ।
saṁharṣitaḥ punardhyātvā manasaivaṁ vyacintayet ॥ 3.41 ॥

English

Beholding that Self-Arisen One, Mañjudeva of excellent mind,
delighted, meditated again and reflected thus in his heart:

Purport

The name shifts here from Mañjuśrī to Mañjudeva, the human form he is about to take. The poet makes the change before the transformation is described, which is a small piece of craft.

aho svayaṁ samudbhūto dharmmadhātu jinālayaḥ ।
nirjane jalamaye jyotirūpaḥ saṁbhāṣayan sthitaḥ ॥ 3.42 ॥

English

How wonderful. The Dharmadhātu, the abode of the Jina, has arisen of itself,
and stands in a form of light in this watery and unpeopled place, speaking.

Purport

Two words carry the whole problem: watery, and unpeopled. The shrine is teaching, and there is nobody there to hear it. That is what he decides to fix.

tattathāhaṁ kariṣyāmi gatvā tatra mahāhrade ।
śoṣayitvā tadambhāṁsi yathā pṛthvītalo'bhavat ॥ 3.43 ॥

English

Therefore I shall do this: I shall go there to that great lake,
and drain away its waters, so that it becomes dry land.

Purport

The decision that made the Kathmandu Valley. It is stated plainly and without drama, as a practical plan, which is somehow more striking than if it had been announced with thunder.

tadā tatra mahībhūte nirjale supratiṣṭhite ।
śiloccaye pratiṣṭhāpya bhajiṣyāmi tamīśvaram ॥ 3.44 ॥

English

Then, on that ground become land and well settled, free of water,
I shall establish him upon a hill and worship that Lord.

Purport

The plan has three parts, and this is the second: to set the shrine on a hill once the water is gone. That hill is the one the Swayambhu stupa stands on today.

tathā tatra mahībhūte grāmādi vasatirbhavet ।
tadā sarve'pi lokāśca bhajeyustaṁ jinālayam ॥ 3.45 ॥

English

And on that ground become land, villages and dwellings will arise,
and then all people will be able to worship that abode of the Jina.

Purport

The third part of the plan, and the reason for the other two. He is not draining the lake to make land. He is draining it so that people can live near the shrine and reach it.

tathā tatpuṇya bhāvena sarvadā tatra maṁgalam ।
nirutpātaṁ bhavennūnaṁ lokāśca syuḥ subhāvinaḥ ॥ 3.46 ॥

English

And by the power of that merit there will always be blessing there,
freedom from calamity will surely follow, and the people will prosper.

Purport

The promise made to the valley in chapter one, spoken here as a prediction by the man who is about to create it.

tataste mānavāḥ sarve tasyaiva śaraṇāśritāḥ ।
yathāśakti mahotsāhaiḥ prabhajeyuḥ sadā mudā ॥ 3.47 ॥

English

Then all those people, taking refuge in him alone,
will worship him always with joy and with festivity, according to their means.

Purport

'According to their means' again, the phrase that runs through chapter two's catalogue of offerings. Even in the founding vision, nobody is asked for more than they have.

tatastatpuṇyaśuddhāste saddharma guṇalālasāḥ ।
bodhisattvā mahāsattvāścareyurbodhisaṁvaram ॥ 3.48 ॥

English

Then, purified by that merit, longing for the virtues of the true Dharma,
they will become Bodhisattvas and great beings, and keep the vow of awakening.

Purport

He is imagining the whole future religious life of a country that does not yet have ground to stand on.

tataste bodhisaṁbhāraṁ pūrayitvā yathākramam ।
trividhāṁ vidhimāsādya nirvṛtipadamāpnuyuḥ ॥ 3.49 ॥

English

Then, fulfilling in due order the accumulations for awakening,
attaining the threefold path, they will reach the state of final peace.

Purport

The familiar gradual path, imagined forward for a population that will exist because of what he is about to do.

evaṁ kṛtvā mahatpuṇyaṁ prāpyāhaṁ trijagatsvapi ।
kṛtvā dharmmamayaṁ bodhiṁ prāpya nirvṛtipadamāpnuyām ॥ 3.50 ॥

English

And having done this great meritorious deed, I too, in all three worlds,
making the Dharma to prevail, shall attain awakening and reach final peace.

Purport

He finishes his reasoning by counting himself among the beneficiaries. In this tradition an act done for others is not diminished by the doer also gaining from it.

iti dhyātvā viniścitya mañjuśrīḥ sajinātmajaḥ ।
mañjudevābhidhācāryarūpaṁ dhṛtvā maharddhimān ॥ 3.51 ॥

English

Having thus meditated and resolved, Mañjuśrī, son of the Jina,
great in power, took the form of a teacher under the name Mañjudeva,

Purport

The bodhisattva puts on a human form to do the work. In Nepali tradition Mañjudeva is the name under which Mañjuśrī acts in the valley, and it is under this name that he is remembered as its founder.

keśinī varadā nāma mokṣadākhyā copakeśinī ।
bhūtvānekaiḥ mahāsattvaiḥ sahasarve'pinecarat ॥ 3.52 ॥

English

Keśinī becoming Varadā by name, and Upakeśinī, Mokṣadā,
and with many great beings, all of them set out together.

Purport

The two consorts take new names as well: Varadā, 'giver of boons', and Mokṣadā, 'giver of liberation'. These are the names by which they are still known in the valley.

tataścaran sabhāryāsau mañjudevaḥ sasāṁdhikaḥ ।
sarvatra bhadratāṁ kṛtvā mahotsāhaiḥ samācarat ॥ 3.53 ॥

English

Then Mañjudeva, travelling with his consorts and companions,
doing good everywhere, journeyed on with great enthusiasm.

Purport

The journey from the far north is given a single line, and even that line has him doing good along the way. The poem is not interested in the distance, only in what he is going towards.

tatra te samupāgatya dūrataḥ saṁprabhāsvaram ।
mahāhradābjamadhyasthaṁ dadṛśustaṁ jinālayam ॥ 3.54 ॥

English

Coming there, from afar they saw it shining brightly,
that abode of the Jina standing at the centre of the lotus of the great lake.

Purport

The first sight of Swayambhu from a distance, across water. Anyone who has come over the rim of the valley and seen the stupa on its hill will recognise the shape of the moment, though the water is long gone.

tatra te taṁ samālokya jyotirūpaṁ samujjvalam ।
praṇatvā sahasopetya kṛtvā pradakṣiṇāni ca ॥ 3.55 ॥

English

Seeing there that blazing form of light,
they bowed and drew near at once, and made circumambulations,

Purport

They walk around the lake in order to circumambulate what is in the middle of it. The poet does not say so, but the geography requires it.

tattīre parvate ramye sarve'pi te samāśritāḥ ।
taṁ caityameva saṁvīkṣya nyavasanta pramoditāḥ ॥ 3.56 ॥

English

and on a lovely hill upon its shore they all settled,
and looking upon that caitya, dwelt there in delight.

Purport

They camp on a hill at the water's edge, in sight of the shrine. This is the first human settlement in the Kathmandu Valley as this poem tells it.

tataḥ prātaḥ samutthāya mañjudevaḥ sa ṛddhimān ।
bhaktyā paramayāstauṣījjinālayaṁ svayaṁbhuvam ॥ 3.57 ॥

English

Then, rising at dawn, Mañjudeva, great in power,
with the highest devotion praised that Self-Arisen abode of the Jina:

Purport

Before he cuts anything he sings. The next seven verses are a hymn, and it is the most unusual passage in the poem so far.

jyotirūpāya caitanyarūpāya bhavate namaḥ ।
anādi nidhanāya śrīdātre praṇavarūpiṇe ॥ 3.58 ॥

English

Salutation to you, whose form is light and whose nature is consciousness,
without beginning or end, giver of glory, whose form is the sacred syllable Om.

Purport

The hymn opens in language no Buddhist text needs to use. Consciousness as the ground of being, and the shrine identified with Om itself. The poet is deliberately reaching for words a Hindu worshipper would recognise.

viśvatomukha rūpāya svāhāsvadhārūpiṇe ।
pṛthvyādibhūtanirmātre mahāmahasvarūpiṇe ॥ 3.59 ॥

English

To you whose face is turned in every direction, whose form is svāhā and svadhā,
maker of earth and the other elements, whose nature is the great radiance.

Purport

Svāhā and svadhā are the calls made when pouring offerings into a Vedic fire, one for the gods and one for the ancestors. The shrine is being addressed as the ritual itself.

jagatsraṣṭe jagatpātre jagaddhartre namo namaḥ ।
jagatvaṁdyāya jagatamārādhāya ca te namaḥ ॥ 3.60 ॥

English

Maker of the world, protector of the world, upholder of the world, salutation again and again;
to you who are worthy of the world's homage and the world's worship, salutation.

जगत्का स्रष्टा, जगत्का पालक, जगत्का धारक, बारम्बार नमस्कार;

Purport

Creator, preserver and upholder, the three functions Hindu theology assigns to Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Śiva, all attributed here to a Buddhist stupa.

atisthūlāya sūkṣmāya vikārāya vikāriṇe ।
nirākṛtikṛte tubhyaṁ saccidānandamūrtaye ॥ 3.61 ॥

English

To the exceedingly gross and to the subtle, to change and to the changing,
to you who are without form, whose body is being, consciousness and bliss.

Purport

Saccidānanda, being and consciousness and bliss, is the central formula of Vedanta. Its appearance here is the clearest sign of how thoroughly the religious languages of the valley had grown into one another by the eighteenth century.

vaṣaṭkāra svarūpāya hutabhuje svayaṁ namaḥ ।
hotre havana rūpāya homadravyāya te namaḥ ॥ 3.62 ॥

English

To you whose form is the call vaṣaṭ, to the eater of oblations, salutation;
to the priest, to the offering itself, and to the substance offered, salutation.

वषट्कारस्वरूप, हुतभुज तपाईंलाई नमस्कार;

Purport

The shrine is called the priest, the act of offering, and the thing offered, all at once. It is an old and elegant move in Indian hymns: when everything in the rite is the same, there is nothing left outside it.

bhaktilabhyāya saumyāya bhaktavatsalāya te namaḥ ।
dhyānagamyāya dhyeyāya caturvargapradāyine ॥ 3.63 ॥

English

To you who are found through devotion, gentle, tender to those who love you, salutation;
to you who are reached through meditation, the object of meditation, giver of the fourfold aim.

भक्तिले प्राप्त हुने, सौम्य, भक्तवत्सल तपाईंलाई नमस्कार;

Purport

Bhaktavatsala, tender towards devotees, is a word from the vocabulary of Hindu devotional poetry. And the fourfold aim returns from chapter two: dharma, artha, kāma and mokṣa.

agraratnāya niḥsīmamahimne sarvadā namaḥ ।
guṇātītāya yogāya yogine ca sadā namaḥ ॥ 3.64 ॥

English

To the foremost jewel, whose greatness is without limit, salutation always;
to you who are beyond the qualities, who are yoga and the yogin, salutation always.

अग्ररत्न, असीम महिमा भएका तपाईंलाई सदा नमस्कार;

Purport

The hymn ends on guṇātīta, beyond the three qualities of nature, which is Sāṁkhya language. Seven verses, and hardly a distinctively Buddhist phrase in them. Whoever composed this was writing for a valley where the same people visited both kinds of shrine.

evaṁ stutvā mañjudevaḥ punaḥ kṣamārthatāṁ vyadhāt ।
prasīda bhagavan yadahaṁ hradaṁ saṁśoṣituṁ yate ॥ 3.65 ॥

English

Having praised him thus, Mañjudeva then asked his pardon:
Be gracious, Blessed One, that I now undertake to drain this lake.

Purport

He asks permission before altering the landscape. It is a small verse and an unexpectedly careful one: the water is the shrine's home, and he is about to take it away.

ityuktvā candrahāsaṁ sa sajjīkṛtya samaṁ tataḥ ।
tridhā pradakṣiṇīkṛtya samantato vyalokayat ॥ 3.66 ॥

English

Saying this, he made ready his sword Candrahāsa,
circled him three times, and looked all around.

Purport

Candrahāsa, 'moon-laughter', is the name of Mañjuśrī's sword. In every image of him it is raised above his shoulder, the blade that cuts through ignorance. Here it is about to cut through a mountain.

vilokya sa mahāsattvo yāmya diśāvṛtaṁ nagam ।
candrahāsena khaḍgena chitvā jalāśrayaṁ vyadhāt ॥ 3.67 ॥

English

Looking, that great being saw the hill that closed the southern quarter,
and cutting it with the sword Candrahāsa, made an outlet for the waters.

Purport

This is the single most famous sentence in Nepali legend. The gorge he cuts is Chobhar, at the southern rim of the valley, where the Bagmati still runs out through a cleft in the rock. Visitors are shown it to this day.

tacchinnaśailamārgeṇa tajjalāni samantataḥ ।
pranirgatyāśu sarvāṇi gaṁgāsaṁgamamāyayuḥ ॥ 3.68 ॥

English

Through that cut in the rock the waters from every side
poured swiftly out and went to join the Ganges.

Purport

The lake empties south into the Ganges basin, which is where the Bagmati actually goes. The poem's geography is accurate.

tadārabhya nadā nadyo babhūvurbhūtale hradāḥ ।
digvidikṣu malāṁbhobhistaddvīpaiḥ paripūritāḥ ॥ 3.69 ॥

English

From that time rivers and streams and pools came into being upon the earth,
filled in every direction with those waters and their islands.

Purport

The rivers of the valley are described as the leftovers of the lake. For anyone who has stood on the Bagmati's bank in Kathmandu, this is the poem explaining the water they are looking at.

tatra nirudhya ye'mbuni yatra ye śilāḥ sthitāḥ ।
tatra tatra satānsarvāśchitvā svūnica cārayet ॥ 3.70 ॥

English

Wherever the waters were held back, wherever rocks stood in the way,
he cut through them all, one after another, and let the waters run.

Purport

The work is not finished in one stroke. He goes around the basin clearing obstructions, which is how anyone who has actually drained a field would describe it.

evaṁ sa sarvataśchitvā kṛtvā tajjalanirgamam ।
trirātreṇāpi na jalāni sarvāṇi niracārayet ॥ 3.71 ॥

English

Thus cutting on every side and making an outlet for those waters,
even in three nights he did not drain all of them away.

Purport

Three nights of work, and still not done. The detail is oddly homely for a bodhisattva with a magic sword, and it makes the labour feel real.

tajjalādhānamekaṁ tu hradaṁ dhanādahābhidham ।
karkkoṭakanāgasya samasthāpa yadāśramam ॥ 3.72 ॥

English

One body of those waters he left as a lake, called Dhanadaha,
and established it as the dwelling place of the Nāga Karkoṭaka.

Purport

Karkoṭaka was named in chapter one as the serpent king of the lake. He is not driven out. A pool is left for him, and that pool is Taudaha, on the southern edge of Kathmandu, where he is said to live still.

siṁhenopadrutā yadvadgajendrā bhaya vihvalāḥ ।
mahārāvai rudanto vai vidravanto diśo daśa ॥ 3.73 ॥

English

As elephants, terrified and driven by a lion,
cry out with great roaring and scatter into the ten directions,

Purport

The only extended simile in the chapter, and it is given to the sound of the water. The poet wants us to hear the lake go out.

evaṁ tajjalasaṁghātaścandrahāsāsichedanāt ।
mārgāntarānniragamat paṁkaśeṣaṁ yathābhavat ॥ 3.74 ॥

English

so that mass of waters, cut open by the sword Candrahāsa,
rushed out along the other paths, until only mud remained.

Purport

The image at the end is not majestic at all. What is left is mud. The poet is honest about what the bottom of a drained lake looks like.

tajjalādhānamekaṁ tu hradaṁ dharādrahābhidham ।
karkkoṭakasya nāgasya samasthāpayadāśrayam ॥ 3.75 ॥

English

One body of those waters he left as a lake called Dharādaha,
and established it as the refuge of the Nāga Karkoṭaka.

Purport

The verse repeats 72 almost exactly, with the pool's name in a slightly different form. Repetitions like this are common in manuscript transmission, and the poem is left as it stands.

tatastasmin jale śuṣkeyadādhārasaroruham ।
tadeva parvatābhūya dharmadhātorvyavasthitaḥ ॥ 3.76 ॥

English

Then, when those waters had dried, the lotus that had borne him
became a mountain itself, and there the Dharmadhātu stood established.

Purport

The hill of Swayambhu is the lotus, turned to stone. It is the most beautiful idea in the chapter: the flower did not wither when the water left, it hardened into the ground the stupa stands on.

mañjudevānubhāvena sa sarvaparvatottamaḥ ।
abhedyo vajravaktreṇa vajrakūṭa iti smṛtaḥ ॥ 3.77 ॥

English

By the power of Mañjudeva, that mountain, best of all mountains,
unbreakable as the face of the vajra, was remembered as Vajrakūṭa.

Purport

Vajrakūṭa, Vajra Peak, was named in chapter one as the hill's name in the Tretā age. Here we learn where the name came from. The poem is filling in its own earlier list.

tadāsau bhūtaloramyaḥ samantato nagāvṛtaḥ ।
upachandoha ityākhyā himāla yo'picocyate ॥ 3.78 ॥

English

Then that ground, lovely and ringed about with hills,
was called Upachandoha, and is spoken of also as Himālaya.

Purport

Upachandoha is one of the twenty-four sacred sites of the tantric geography of India, and naming the valley as one of them places it on a map that a tantric practitioner anywhere in Asia would have recognised.

sudurjayā svarūpābhūt prajñā jñānānubhāvinī ।
herukamaṇḍalākārā bhūtvā samavatiṣṭhate ॥ 3.79 ॥

English

The ground took the form of Sudurjayā, wisdom that partakes of knowledge,
and stood there having become the shape of the Heruka maṇḍala.

Purport

Sudurjayā, 'very hard to conquer', is the fifth of the ten stages of the bodhisattva path. The valley floor is being described not as a place containing a maṇḍala but as one, which is how Newar Buddhism has always understood the Kathmandu Valley.

tatrāpi ca pradhānā śrī mahādevī khagānanā ।
dharmmodayā samudbhūtā saṁtiṣṭhate jagaddhite ॥ 3.80 ॥

English

And there too the foremost, glorious great goddess Khagānanā,
arising as Dharmodayā, stands for the welfare of the world.

Purport

Khagānanā, 'sky-faced', arising as Dharmodayā, 'source of the Dharma'. She is Guhyeśvarī, whose shrine stands near Pashupatinath and who is among the most important deities in the valley for Hindus and Buddhists alike. In this account she emerges from the lake bed along with the land.

taṁ dṛṣṭvā sa mahācāryo mañjudevo maharddhimān ।
bodhisattvo mahāsattvaḥ paramānandito'bhavat ॥ 3.81 ॥

English

Seeing her, that great teacher Mañjudeva, of great power,
a Bodhisattva and great being, was filled with the highest delight.

Purport

He had come for the Dharmadhātu. He finds that the drained ground has produced something he did not expect, and the next twenty verses are given to her.

tataḥ sa tāṁ mahādevī samālokya pramoditaḥ ।
urasā śirasā dṛṣṭyā vacasā manasā tathā ॥ 3.82 ॥

English

Then, beholding that great goddess, filled with joy,
with chest, with head, with eyes, with speech and with mind,

Purport

The poet begins listing the parts of the body involved in a full prostration, and the list runs on into the next verse.

padbhyāṁ karābhyāṁ jānubhyāmaṣṭāṁgamiti smṛtaḥ ।
aṣṭāṁgaiḥ praṇatiṁ kṛtvā sāṁjaliḥ samupāśrayan ॥ 3.83 ॥

English

with both feet, both hands and both knees, which is called the eight-limbed bow,
he made the eight-limbed prostration and drew near with folded hands.

Purport

The poem pauses to define its own term. Having used 'eight-limbed prostration' many times across three chapters, it finally counts the eight limbs, which suggests the poet expected readers who had never been taught.

suprasanna mukhāmbhojaḥ suprabuddhāśayāmbujaḥ ।
saṁpaśyaṁstāṁ mahādevīṁ stotrairevaṁ mudābhajat ॥ 3.84 ॥

English

His lotus face serene, his heart like a lotus fully opened,
gazing upon that great goddess, he worshipped her joyfully with hymns:

Purport

A second hymn begins, and it is quite different in temper from the first. The one to Swayambhu was cosmological. This one is personal.

bhagavati mahādevi bhavatyāḥ śaraṇaṁ vraje ।
vande pādāmbuje nityaṁ bhajāmi tatprasīdatu ॥ 3.85 ॥

English

Blessed great goddess, I go to you for refuge;
I bow always at your lotus feet and worship you. Be gracious.

हे भगवती महादेवी, म तपाईंको शरणमा जान्छु;

Purport

Plain devotional language, with no theology in it at all. He simply takes refuge and asks for her favour.

jananī sarvabuddhānāṁ tvameva bodhidāyinī ।
sarveṣāṁ bodhisattvānāṁ mātāhitānupālinī ॥ 3.86 ॥

English

You alone are the mother of all Buddhas, the giver of awakening,
the mother of all Bodhisattvas, the guardian of their welfare.

Purport

Mother of all Buddhas is a title given in Mahayana literature to Prajñāpāramitā, perfect wisdom personified as a goddess. Awakening comes out of wisdom, so wisdom is what gives birth to Buddhas.

sarvahitārtha saṁbhakti sarvapāpaviśodhanī ।
duṣṭa māragaṇākṣobha mahānanda sukhapradā ॥ 3.87 ॥

English

Devotion to the welfare of all, purifier of every sin,
who shakes the hosts of wicked Māra, giver of great joy and ease,

Purport

She is credited with the defeat of Māra, which in the standard account is the Buddha's own achievement on the night of his awakening. The hymn is giving wisdom the credit for it.

saddharmmasādhanotsāhabalavīrya guṇapradā ।
niḥkleśastimitadhyāna samādhi sukhadāyinī ॥ 3.88 ॥

English

giver of the virtues of zeal, strength and vigour in the practice of the true Dharma,
giver of the ease of undisturbed meditation and absorption free of defilement,

Purport

The gifts asked of her are the capacities needed for practice rather than its results. She gives the energy to begin, not the reward at the end.

prajñāguṇa mahāratna śrī samṛddhi pradāyinī ।
tadbhaktyā padāmbhoja śaraṇastho bhajāmyaham ॥ 3.89 ॥

English

giver of the great jewel of the virtue of wisdom, of glory and abundance:
in devotion to you, taking refuge at your lotus feet, I worship.

Purport

The hymn ends the way it began, with refuge rather than request. Six verses, and he has asked for nothing for himself.

iti saṁprārthya sa prājño mañjudevaḥ sasaṁvarī ।
tasyā bhaktyā prasannātmā samārādhitumaicchat ॥ 3.90 ॥

English

Having thus prayed, that wise Mañjudeva, keeper of the vows,
with a heart made serene by devotion to her, desired to worship her fully.

Purport

Praise was not enough. He wants to perform the full observance, and the next ten verses describe it step by step.

atha tatra sa ācāryaḥ sagaṇaḥ saṁpramoditaḥ ।
mārgaśīrṣe site pakṣe navamyāṁ ravivāsare ॥ 3.91 ॥

English

Then that teacher there, with his company, filled with joy,
on the ninth day of the bright fortnight of Mārgaśīrṣa, on a Sunday,

Purport

A precise date, which is rare in this poem and tells you that a real observance is being described. Mārgaśīrṣa falls in November or December, and the ninth of the bright fortnight is still kept at Guhyeśvarī.

prātaḥ snātvā viśuddhātmā śucivastrāvṛtaḥ sudhīḥ ।
poṣadhasamvaraṁ dhṛtvā devīmārādhayan sthitaḥ ॥ 3.92 ॥

English

bathing at dawn, purified in self, clothed in clean garments, wise,
took the fasting vow and stood in worship of the goddess.

Purport

The upoṣadha fast was described in chapter one as the first practical step of the bodhisattva vow. Here the founder of the valley is shown performing it.

rātrau jāgaraṇaṁ kṛtvā dhāraṇī mantrajalpanaiḥ ।
stutibhiśca samārādhya prābhajaṁstāṁ jineśvarīm ॥ 3.93 ॥

English

Keeping vigil through the night with the recitation of dhāraṇīs and mantras,
and worshipping with hymns, they honoured that Lady of the Jinas.

Purport

An all-night vigil, still the shape of a major observance in the valley. The word for it, jāgaraṇa, is the same one used today.

tataḥ prātardaśamyāṁ sa snātvā gandhodakairmudā ।
datvā dānaṁ yathākāmaṁ pariśuddhatrimaṇḍalaḥ ॥ 3.94 ॥

English

Then at dawn on the tenth day, bathing joyfully in scented waters,
giving gifts at will, with the three spheres made wholly pure,

Purport

Bathing, then giving, then worship. The sequence is the same one prescribed in chapter one and catalogued in chapter two, performed here for the first time on this ground.

yathāvidhisamabhyarcya tāṁ devīṁ parameśvarīm ।
mahotsāhaiḥ stutiṁ kṛtvā tridhā pradakṣiṇāni ca ॥ 3.95 ॥

English

worshipping according to the rule that goddess, the supreme sovereign,
he praised her with great festivity and made three circumambulations,

Purport

Three circumambulations, the ordinary human number, the same as the three he made around Swayambhu before drawing the sword.

suprasanna mukhāmbhojaḥ saddharmaguṇamānasaḥ ।
bhūyo'ṣṭāṁgaiḥ praṇatvaivaṁ prārthayatsāṁjalirmudā ॥ 3.96 ॥

English

his lotus face serene, his mind set on the virtues of the true Dharma,
and bowing again with the eight limbs, prayed thus with folded hands:

Purport

The observance closes as it opened, with a prostration and a request.

prasīdatu jaganmātarbhavatyāḥ samupāśritaḥ ।
saṁbodhi sādhanotsuko bhajāmi sarvadā mudā ॥ 3.97 ॥

English

Be gracious, mother of the world; I have taken refuge in you.
Devoted to the accomplishment of awakening, I worship you always with joy.

Purport

Mother of the world rather than mother of the Buddhas. The hymn began with a doctrinal title and ends with a familial one.

iti saṁprārthya sa prājño natvāṣṭāṁgairmudā ca tām ।
tatpadmāmṛtamādāya tridhāñjalinā pibet ॥ 3.98 ॥

English

Having thus prayed, that wise one, bowing to her joyfully with the eight limbs,
took up the nectar of her lotus and drank it three times from his cupped hands.

Purport

The water of the shrine drunk from cupped hands, three times. At Guhyeśvarī the offering is made at a water surface in the ground, and this verse describes a practice that pilgrims still perform there.

tadamṛtaṁ nipīyāsau saṁviśuddhatrimaṇḍalaḥ ।
aṣṭākṣaṇavinirmuktaḥ saṁbuddhakṣaṇamāptavān ॥ 3.99 ॥

English

Having drunk that nectar, his three spheres made wholly pure,
freed from the eight unfortunate conditions, he attained the moment of awakening.

Purport

The eight akṣaṇas are the eight circumstances in which a person cannot practise: birth in a hell, as an animal, as a hungry ghost, in a long-lived heaven, among barbarians, with defective faculties, holding wrong views, or in an age with no Buddha. Escaping all eight is the traditional definition of a fortunate human birth.

evaṁ kṛtvā sa ācāryo devyā bhaktiparāyaṇaḥ ।
saṁbuddhakṣaṇamāsādya sarva dharmmādhipo'bhavat ॥ 3.100 ॥

English

Having done this, that teacher, wholly given to devotion to the goddess,
reached the moment of awakening and became lord of all the Dharma.

Purport

The man who drained the lake is shown gaining more from worshipping the goddess who emerged from it than from the draining itself.

tataḥ śrīmān sa ācāryo bodhisattvo jagaddhite ।
sasaṁgho nyavasattatra dharmadhātorupāśramaiḥ ॥ 3.101 ॥

English

Then that glorious teacher, a Bodhisattva devoted to the world's welfare,
settled there with his community in hermitages near the Dharmadhātu.

Purport

He does not leave. The founder of the valley becomes its first resident, and the community he settles with is the beginning of monastic life in Nepal as this poem tells it.

tatsamadhyuṣitatvātsa pradeśaḥ śrī manoharaḥ ।
syātsarvatrāpi mañjuśrīparvata iti viśrutaḥ ॥ 3.102 ॥

English

Because it was inhabited by him, that lovely and glorious region
came to be known everywhere as the Mountain of Mañjuśrī.

Purport

Mañjuśrī Parvata is the hill north west of the Swayambhu stupa, still crowned by a shrine to him and still called by his name. It was mentioned in passing in chapter one when the Buddha arrived; here we learn how it got the name.

tatra śritaḥ sadāpyasya dharmmadhātorupāsakaḥ ।
sarvasattva hitārthena prābhajansa jinātmajaḥ ॥ 3.103 ॥

English

Dwelling there always as a devotee of that Dharmadhātu,
that son of the Jina worshipped him for the welfare of all beings.

Purport

The great deed done, he settles into the ordinary daily worship that the rest of the poem has been recommending to everyone else.

tatsamīkṣyāmalāḥ sarvebrahmendrapramukhāapi ।
sarvelokādhipāścāpi mudā tatra samāgatāḥ ॥ 3.104 ॥

English

Beholding this, all the stainless ones, Brahmā, Indra and the rest,
and all the guardians of the worlds, came there with joy.

Purport

Now the pilgrimage that the portents in verse 29 were announcing. This is the answer Viśvabhū is giving to Gaganagañja's question, and we are inside it.

tatraivopoṣadhaṁ dhṛtvā kṛtvā jāgaraṇaṁ niśi ।
uṣitvā dhāraṇīmantrairdhyātvā tāṁ śrī jineśvarīm ॥ 3.105 ॥

English

There they took the fasting vow, kept vigil through the night,
and staying with dhāraṇīs and mantras, meditated on that glorious Lady of the Jinas.

Purport

The gods do exactly what Mañjudeva did, in the same order, on the same ground. The poem is showing a liturgy being copied from its founder.

yathāvidhi samabhyarcya kṛtvā pradakṣiṇāni ca ।
kṛtvāṣṭāṁga praṇāmāni stutibhiścābhajan mudā ॥ 3.106 ॥

English

Worshipping according to the rule and making circumambulations,
making eight-limbed prostrations, they worshipped joyfully with hymns.

Purport

Four acts in two lines, and every one of them can still be watched at Guhyeswari on a festival morning.

evaṁ tasyā mahādevyāḥ sarve te śaraṇāśritāḥ ।
dharmaśrīguṇasaṁpatti maharddhisiddhimāpnuvan ॥ 3.107 ॥

English

Thus all those who took refuge in that great goddess
gained the wealth of Dharma, glory and virtue, and great power and accomplishment.

Purport

The gods, who lack for nothing, are described as gaining something here. The poem does not treat divinity as a finished state.

tataste cāmarāḥ sarve sendrabrahmādayo'dhipāḥ ।
vajrakūṭaṁ nagābjaṁ taṁ samīkṣyante jinālayam ॥ 3.108 ॥

English

Then all those immortals, with Indra, Brahmā and the other lords,
beholding Vajrakūṭa, that mountain-lotus, the abode of the Jina,

Purport

The hill is called a mountain-lotus, holding together in one word what it was and what it became.

anumodyābhinandante stasyāpi śaraṇe gatāḥ ।
mahotsāhaiḥ samabhyarcya prabhajanta samādaram ॥ 3.109 ॥

English

rejoiced and gave their assent, and took refuge in him too,
worshipping him with great festivity and honouring him with reverence.

Purport

They worship the goddess first and the Dharmadhātu second. The order is the order in which the poem has just introduced them.

tataḥ sarve'marāste ca sarvailokādhipāśca te ।
asyāpi mañjudevasya vajrācāryasya sadguroḥ ॥ 3.110 ॥

English

Then all those immortals and all those guardians of the worlds
came also to this Mañjudeva, the vajra teacher, the true guru,

Purport

Vajrācārya is the title of the married Newar Buddhist priesthood of the Kathmandu Valley, and applying it to Mañjudeva makes him the first of that lineage. For a Newar reader this verse is the charter of his own community.

śaraṇe samupāśritya divya pūjopahārakaiḥ ।
samabhyarcya mahotsāhaiḥ prābhajanta pramoditāḥ ॥ 3.111 ॥

English

and drawing near in refuge, with divine offerings of worship,
honoured him with great festivity and worshipped him with delight.

Purport

The gods take refuge in a human teacher. It is the same reversal chapter one made when an emperor prostrated before a monk.

evaṁ manvādayaḥ sarve munayo'pi maharṣayaḥ ।
yatayo yoginaścāpi bhikṣavo brahmacāriṇaḥ ॥ 3.112 ॥

English

So too Manu and all the rest, and the great seers,
renunciates and yogins, monks and celibate practitioners,

Purport

Manu, the first man and lawgiver of the Hindu tradition, arrives to worship at a Buddhist site. The poem keeps making these crossings without comment.

cailakā bodhisattvāśca mahāsattvā jinātmajāḥ ।
te sarve samupāgatya tasyā devyā upāsakāḥ ॥ 3.113 ॥

English

cailakas, Bodhisattvas and great beings, sons of the Jina:
all of them came and became devotees of that goddess,

Purport

The catalogue is the same one used for every assembly in the poem, moved now from a lecture hall to a hillside.

yathāvidhi samabhyarcya prābhajanta pramoditāḥ ।
tataste dharmmadhātośca sarve'pi śaraṇāśritāḥ ॥ 3.114 ॥

English

and worshipping according to the rule, honoured her with delight.
Then all of them took refuge in the Dharmadhātu as well,

Purport

The pattern of the next several verses is fixed: first the goddess, then the shrine, then the teacher. Three objects of worship in one place.

samabhyarcya mahotsāhaiḥ natvā kṛtvā pradakṣiṇām ।
suprasanna mukhāmbhojāste pramoditāḥ ॥ 3.115 ॥

English

worshipping with great festivity, bowing and circumambulating,
their lotus faces serene, filled with delight.

Purport

The serene lotus face keeps returning as the poem's sign that worship has done its work on the worshipper.

tataste ca mahāsattvā mañjudevaṁ maharddhikam ।
ācāryaṁ samutsāhaiḥ samarcayan pramoditāḥ ॥ 3.116 ॥

English

Then those great beings also honoured Mañjudeva of great power,
the teacher, with festivity, and were filled with delight.

Purport

The third of the three. The poem is establishing a triad that it will name explicitly later in the chapter.

pratyeka sugatāścāpi sarve tatra samāgatāḥ ।
tāṁ devīṁ dharmmadhātuṁ tamācāryaṁ ca samārcayan ॥ 3.117 ॥

English

The solitary Buddhas too all came there,
and worshipped that goddess, the Dharmadhātu, and that teacher.

Purport

Pratyekabuddhas are by definition solitary and do not gather. The poet brings even them down the hill.

sarve tathāgatāścāpi pūjāmeghasarjanaiḥ ।
tāṁ devīṁ dharmadhātuṁ tamācāryaṁ ca samārcayan ॥ 3.118 ॥

English

And all the Tathāgatas too, with clouds of offerings sent forth,
worshipped that goddess, the Dharmadhātu, and that teacher.

Purport

Clouds of offerings is a Mahayana image: a Buddha does not carry flowers but produces them, whole skies of them, by the power of his intention.

evamanye'pi lokāśca praduṣṭvā samupāgatāḥ ।
tāṁ devīṁ dharmadhātuṁ ca tamācāryaṁ ca prābhajan ॥ 3.119 ॥

English

And other people too, coming there from every side,
worshipped that goddess and the Dharmadhātu and that teacher.

Purport

The list has run from the gods down to ordinary people, and all of them are doing the same three things in the same order.

etatpuṇyānubhāvena calitā sābdhinagā mahī ।
puṣpavṛṣṭiḥ śubhotsāhaṁ pravarttate samantataḥ ॥ 3.120 ॥

English

By the power of that merit the earth with its oceans and mountains shook,
showers of flowers fell, and auspicious rejoicing spread on every side.

Purport

And here the answer closes the circle. The earthquake the assembly felt in verse 29 was caused by the worship being offered in a valley that had just come into existence.

ityādiṣṭaṁ munīndreṇa viśbabhūvā niśamya te ।
sarve samāśritā lokā vismayaṁ samupāyayuḥ ॥ 3.121 ॥

English

When the Lord of Sages Viśvabhū had thus instructed, hearing it,
all who were gathered there were filled with wonder.

Purport

We surface from the story into the assembly that was listening to it, exactly as chapter two did.

tataḥ sarve'pi te lokāstāṁ devīṁ śrīmaheśvarīm ।
dharmmadhātuṁ tamācāryaṁ draṣṭumabhiva vāñchire ॥ 3.122 ॥

English

Then all those people longed to behold that goddess, the glorious sovereign,
and the Dharmadhātu, and that teacher.

Purport

Hearing about a place produces the desire to go to it. That is what happened in chapter two, and it is what the poem expects of its own readers.

tadāśayaṁ parijñāya gaganagañja utthitaḥ ।
bhagavantaṁ tamānamya paśyannevamavravīt ॥ 3.123 ॥

English

Knowing their wish, Gaganagañja rose,
and looking upon the Blessed One, spoke thus:

Purport

He asks on the assembly's behalf, as Ratnapāṇi did in chapter two and Maitreya in chapter one. The good questioner in this poem is never asking for himself.

bhagavan sarvamicchanti draṣṭuṁ tāṁ sugateśvarīm ।
dharmmadhātuṁ tamācāryaṁ tadanujñāṁ dadātu naḥ ॥ 3.124 ॥

English

Blessed One, all wish to behold that Lady of the Sugata,
the Dharmadhātu and that teacher. Grant us your leave.

Purport

Permission asked before the journey, exactly as Ratnapāṇi asked it.

iti saṁprārthitaṁ tena bhagavānsa munīśvaraḥ ।
gaganagañjamātmajñaṁ taṁ paśyannevamādiśat ॥ 3.125 ॥

English

Thus entreated by him, that Blessed Lord of Sages,
looking upon the self-knowing Gaganagañja, instructed thus:

Purport

The formula one last time before the chapter's second pilgrimage begins.

sādhu sādhyāmahādevīṁ khagānanājineśvarīm ।
dharmadhātuṁ tamācāryamapi draṣṭuṁ yadīcchatha ॥ 3.126 ॥

English

Very well. If you wish to behold that great goddess Khagānanā,
Lady of the Jinas, and the Dharmadhātu and that teacher,

Purport

Permission granted without hesitation, as it was in chapter two.

tatra himālaye gatvā tāṁ śrī devīṁ khagānanām ।
dharmadhātuṁ tamācāryaṁ saṁbhajadhvaṁ yathā vidhi ॥ 3.127 ॥

English

then go there to the Himālaya, and worship according to the rule
that glorious goddess Khagānanā, the Dharmadhātu, and that teacher.

Purport

'According to the rule' again. Even a spontaneous pilgrimage is expected to follow a prescribed form once it arrives.

ityādiṣṭaṁ munīndreṇa viśvabhuvā niśamya te ।
sarve lokā mahotsāhai ratrāyayuḥ pramoditāḥ ॥ 3.128 ॥

English

When the Lord of Sages Viśvabhū had thus instructed, hearing it,
all the people came here with great festivity, filled with delight.

Purport

The word is 'here'. The Buddha telling the story is standing in the valley they came to.

ahamapi munīndrasya prāpyānujñāṁ pramoditaḥ ।
taiḥ sārddhaṁ prasthito dūrātpaśyannimamāyayau ॥ 3.129 ॥

English

I too, having received the Lord of Sages' leave, filled with joy,
set out with them, and seeing it from afar, came here.

Purport

The third time in three chapters that the Buddha places himself in the crowd: bathing in the lake, joining Ratnapāṇi's pilgrimage, and now walking here with the assembly of Viśvabhū.

atra prāpto'haṁ samālokya dharmmadhātumimaṁ mudā ।
samabhyarcya mahotsāhaistairlokaiḥ prābhajaṁ saha ॥ 3.130 ॥

English

Arriving here and joyfully beholding this Dharmadhātu,
I worshipped him with great festivity together with those people.

Purport

He worships alongside everyone else rather than ahead of them. The poem is consistent about this.

śraddhayā śaraṇaṁ gatvā kṛtvā cainaṁ pradakṣiṇām ।
stutvāṣṭāṁgaiḥ praṇatvā ca prārthayaṁ bodhisamvaram ॥ 3.131 ॥

English

Taking refuge with faith and making circumambulation of him,
praising him and bowing with the eight limbs, I prayed for the vow of awakening.

Purport

What he asks for is not a reward but permission to undertake the vow. The bodhisattva Parvata is at the beginning of a road, not the end of one.

tato'haṁ mañjudevākhyaṁ tamācārya samīkṣya ca ।
samabhyarcya mahotsāhaiḥ prābhajaṁ sahānujaiḥ ॥ 3.132 ॥

English

Then, beholding that teacher named Mañjudeva,
I worshipped him with great festivity, together with my companions.

Purport

The future Śākyamuni Buddha worshipping Mañjuśrī. In Mahayana thought this is not strange: Mañjuśrī is spoken of elsewhere as the teacher of all the Buddhas of the past.

tatastasyopadeśāttāṁ śrīdevīṁ khagānanām ।
yathāvidhi samārādhya mahotsāhaiḥ samarcayam ॥ 3.133 ॥

English

Then, following his instruction, I worshipped according to the rule
that glorious goddess Khagānanā, and honoured her with great festivity,

Purport

He receives instruction in the liturgy from Mañjudeva before performing it. The rite is transmitted person to person, which is how the whole poem says everything worth having is transmitted.

kṛtvā pradakṣiṇāṁ cāpi natvāṣṭāṅgaiḥ pramoditaḥ ।
stutvā dhyātvā ca saṁbodhiṁ saṁprārthaya jagaddhite ॥ 3.134 ॥

English

and making circumambulation and bowing with the eight limbs in delight,
praising and meditating, I prayed for awakening, for the welfare of the world.

Purport

The last four words matter. He asks for awakening, and gives the reason: for the welfare of the world.

etatpuṇyānubhāvena pariśuddhatrimaṇḍalaḥ ।
aṣṭākṣaṇa vinirmukto bodhisattvo bhavaṁ kṛtī ॥ 3.135 ॥

English

By the power of that merit, the three spheres made wholly pure
and freed from the eight unfortunate conditions, I became an accomplished Bodhisattva.

Purport

The same result Mañjudeva obtained in verse 99, from the same act, on the same ground. The poem is showing the rite working twice.

tataḥ sambodhisaṁbhāraṁ pūrayitvā yathākramam ।
jitvā māragaṇānarhan kalāvapi jino'bhavam ॥ 3.136 ॥

English

Then, fulfilling in due order the accumulations for awakening,
conquering the hosts of Māra, an Arhat, I became a Jina even in the Kali age.

Purport

The claim made in chapter two is made again here with a different act behind it. Bathing in the lake, joining the pilgrimage, worshipping the goddess: the Buddha credits all three.

evamasyā mahādevyāḥ ye ye śaraṇa āśritāḥ ।
yathāvidhi samārādhya bhajeyurbodhimānasāḥ ॥ 3.137 ॥

English

So too, whoever takes refuge in this great goddess
and worships her according to the rule, with a mind set on awakening,

Purport

The turn outward. What the Buddha did is offered to anyone, which is the move this poem makes at the end of every story it tells.

te te sarve mahāsattvāḥ pariśuddha trimaṇḍalāḥ ।
bodhisattvā mahābhijñā bhaveyu striguṇādhipāḥ ॥ 3.138 ॥

English

all of them become great beings with the three spheres purified,
Bodhisattvas of great knowledge, and lords of the three qualities.

Purport

The next fifteen verses trace the whole bodhisattva path in stages, one step per verse. It is the most systematic passage in the poem.

kutrāpi te na gaccheyurdurggatiṁ ca kadācana ।
sadā sadgatisaṁjātā bhaveyuḥ śrī guṇāśrayāḥ ॥ 3.139 ॥

English

Nowhere at any time do they go to an evil destiny;
always born in fortunate states, they become vessels of glory and virtue.

तिनीहरू कहिल्यै, कतै पनि दुर्गतिमा जाँदैनन्;

Purport

The guarantee that appears in all three chapters, here placed at the foot of the ladder rather than the top.

yathābhivāñchitaṁ dravyaṁ datvārthibhyaḥ samādarāt ।
yathākāmaṁ sukhaṁ bhuktvā sañcarerañjagaddhite ॥ 3.140 ॥

English

Giving with reverence to those who ask whatever goods they desire,
and enjoying happiness at will, they move for the welfare of the world.

Purport

The first rung is giving, and it is placed before morality and meditation, as it always is in Mahayana lists of the perfections.

tato viśuddhaśīlāste caturbrahma vihāriṇaḥ ।
bodhisattvasamvaramādhāya saṁcareran sadā śubhe ॥ 3.141 ॥

English

Then, pure in conduct, dwelling in the four Brahmavihāras,
taking up the Bodhisattva vow, they move always in what is good.

Purport

The second rung is conduct, paired with loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity.

tataste syu rmahāsattvāḥ saddharmma sukhalālasāḥ ।
svaparātmahitādhārakṣāntivratasamāratāḥ ॥ 3.142 ॥

English

Then they become great beings, longing for the happiness of the true Dharma,
devoted to the vow of patience, upholding their own good and others'.

Purport

The third rung is patience. Its definition here is exact: holding one's own good and another's at the same time, which is what patience actually costs.

tataste sadguṇādhārā vīryavanto vicakṣaṇāḥ ।
saddharmma sādhanodyuktā bhaveyu striguṇādhipāḥ ॥ 3.143 ॥

English

Then, vessels of true virtue, vigorous and discerning,
zealous in the practice of the true Dharma, they become lords of the three qualities.

Purport

The fourth rung is vigour, the energy that keeps a practice going after the first enthusiasm has worn off.

tataste sudhiyo dhīrā niḥkleśā vijitendriyāḥ ।
samādhi guṇasampannā bhaveyurbodhiyoginaḥ ॥ 3.144 ॥

English

Then, wise and steady, free of defilement, their senses mastered,
endowed with the virtue of absorption, they become yogins of awakening.

Purport

The fifth rung is meditation. The list is following the six perfections in their canonical order, and one remains.

tataste vimalātmānaḥ sarvavidyā guṇādhipāḥ ।
prajñāśrī ratna saṁprāptā bhaveyuḥ sugatātmajāḥ ॥ 3.145 ॥

English

Then, stainless in self, masters of every branch of knowledge,
having gained the jewel of the glory of wisdom, they become sons of the Sugata.

Purport

The sixth and last perfection is wisdom, and the goddess this whole passage is about is wisdom herself. The ladder has climbed back to its own beginning.

tataśca te mahāsattvāḥ sarvasattvahitotsukāḥ ।
sarvāpāya vidhi prājñā bhaveyustriguṇādhipāḥ ॥ 3.146 ॥

English

Then, as great beings eager for the welfare of all creatures,
wise in the means of averting every misfortune, they become lords of the three qualities.

Purport

Wisdom is immediately turned to use. Knowing how to avert misfortune is practical knowledge, and the poem lists it among the fruits of the path.

tataste bodhisaṁbhāra praṇidhiratnasāgarāḥ ।
sarvasattvahitaṁ kṛtvā saṁcareran sadāśubhe ॥ 3.147 ॥

English

Then, oceans of the jewel of the aspiration and of the accumulations for awakening,
doing good to all beings, they move always in what is good.

Purport

The aspiration is described as a jewel and the practitioner as an ocean holding it. The image is of something enormous carrying something precious.

tataśca te mahābhijñāḥ bhadraśrī sadguṇānvitāḥ ।
baliṣṭhā duṣṭa jetāro bhaveyu stribhaveśvarāḥ ॥ 3.148 ॥

English

Then, of great knowledge, endowed with glory and true virtue,
strong and conquerors of the wicked, they become lords of the three worlds.

Purport

Conquering the wicked here means conquering what is wicked, not conquering wicked people. The poem has used the same phrasing for the defeat of Māra.

tataste trividhāṁ bodhimāsādya bhadracāriṇaḥ ।
sambodhijñānasadratnasamṛddhāḥ syu rmunīśvarāḥ ॥ 3.149 ॥

English

Then, attaining the threefold awakening, walkers of the noble path,
rich in the jewel of the knowledge of perfect awakening, they become Lords of Sages.

Purport

The threefold awakening again: the disciple's, the solitary buddha's and the perfect Buddha's, named in all three chapters.

tataste sugatā buddhā daśabhūmīśvarājināḥ ।
bodhimārge pratiṣṭhāpya kuryuḥ sarvānsudharmmiṇaḥ ॥ 3.150 ॥

English

Then, as Sugatas and Buddhas, Jinas who are lords of the ten stages,
establishing all beings on the path to awakening, they make them followers of the Dharma.

Purport

The ten stages are the ten bhūmis of the bodhisattva path in Mahayana doctrine, of which Sudurjayā, named back in verse 79 as the shape of the valley floor, is the fifth.

evaṁ dharmamayaṁ kṛtvā sarvatra bhuvaneṣvapi ।
sunirvṛtipadaṁ prāpya saṁprayāyurjinālayam ॥ 3.151 ॥

English

Thus making the Dharma to prevail in all the worlds,
attaining the state of perfect peace, they go to the abode of the Jina.

Purport

The ladder ends. Fifteen verses have taken a person from a first act of giving to Buddhahood and then past it, into teaching.

evamasyā mahādevyā bhajanodbhūtamuttamam ।
puṇyaṁ mahattaraṁ siddhaṁ sambuddhapadasādhanam ॥ 3.152 ॥

English

Thus from the worship of this great goddess arises the highest
and exceedingly great merit, which accomplishes the state of a Perfect Buddha.

Purport

The summary of everything since verse 137, stated in a single sentence.

iti satyaṁ samākhyātaṁ sarvai rapi munīśvaraiḥ ।
vijñāyāsyā mahādevyā bhajadhvaṁ śaraṇe sthitā ॥ 3.153 ॥

English

This truth has been declared by all the Lords of Sages.
Knowing it, take refuge in this great goddess and worship her.

Purport

Attributed to all the Buddhas rather than to the speaker, as every claim in this poem is.

asyāpi dharma dhātauśca bhajanodbhūtamuttamam ।
puṇyaṁ mahattaraṁ siddhaṁ sambuddhapadasādhanam ॥ 3.154 ॥

English

And from the worship of this Dharmadhātu too arises the highest
and exceedingly great merit, which accomplishes the state of a Perfect Buddha.

Purport

The second of the three, in the same words.

asyāpi mañjudevasya bhajanodbhūtamuttamam ।
puṇyaṁ mahattaraṁ siddhaṁ sambuddhapadasādhanam ॥ 3.155 ॥

English

And from the worship of this Mañjudeva too arises the highest
and exceedingly great merit, which accomplishes the state of a Perfect Buddha.

Purport

Three verses, three objects of worship, identical wording each time. The goddess, the shrine and the teacher are being set out as this valley's own three jewels, and the next verse names them as such.

matveti yadi vo vāñchā vidyate saugate pade ।
sarve yūyaṁ samādhāya bhajatātra jinālaye ॥ 3.156 ॥

English

Knowing this, if there is in you any longing for the state of the Sugata,
then all of you, with settled minds, worship here at this abode of the Jina.

Purport

The instruction is conditional and unforced. If you want this, do this.

khagānanāyā mahādevyāḥ śaraṇe ca samāśritāḥ ।
dhyātvā smṛtvā samuccārya nāmāpi bhajatābhavam ॥ 3.157 ॥

English

Taking refuge in this great goddess Khagānanā,
meditating, remembering and uttering even her name, worship her lifelong.

Purport

Even her name. The poem keeps lowering the threshold, as it did throughout chapter two.

ya eṣāṁ śaraṇe sthitvā dhyātvā smṛtvā samāhitāḥ ।
nāmāpi samudāhṛtya bhajanti sarvadābhave ॥ 3.158 ॥

English

Those who stand in refuge of these and, with settled minds,
meditating, remembering and uttering even their names, worship them lifelong,

Purport

'These' in the plural: the goddess, the shrine and the teacher together. The sentence runs on into the next verse.

te subhadrā na gacchanti durggatiṁ ca kadācana ।
sadā sadgati saṁjātā bhaveyuḥ śrī guṇāśrayāḥ ॥ 3.159 ॥

English

they, being blessed, never go to an evil destiny at any time;
always born in fortunate states, they become vessels of glory and virtue,

तिनीहरू भद्र भई कहिल्यै दुर्गतिमा जाँदैनन्;

Purport

The guarantee again. The poem repeats it so often that it functions as a refrain rather than an argument.

bodhisattvā mahāsattvā saddharma bodhi cāriṇaḥ ।
sarvasattva hitodyuktā bhaveyuḥ sugatātmajāḥ ॥ 3.160 ॥

English

Bodhisattvas and great beings, walkers of the path of the true Dharma and of awakening,
devoted to the welfare of all beings, they become sons of the Sugata.

Purport

The reward ends where it always ends in this poem, with usefulness to others rather than with rest.

evanteṣāṁ mahatsaukhyaṁ bhadraśrī sadguṇānvitam ।
sarvadāpi nirutpātaṁ pravartate samāhitaḥ ॥ 3.161 ॥

English

Thus for them great happiness, endowed with glory and true virtue,
and freedom from calamity, continues always and undisturbed.

Purport

The chapter now turns from what worship gains to what it prevents. The next twenty-odd verses are a litany of fears, and they are worth reading as a catalogue of what people in this valley were actually afraid of.

daivotpātabhayaṁ teṣāṁ na vidyate samantataḥ ।
yattāndṛṣṭvā surāḥ sarve rakṣantīndrādayomudā ॥ 3.162 ॥

English

No fear of calamity sent by the gods exists for them anywhere,
for seeing them, Indra and all the gods gladly protect them.

Purport

The logic of the whole litany is set out in this first entry. The protector is not a force sent to guard them but the very being who might have harmed them, won over by the sight of them.

agnyutpātabhayaṁ teṣāṁ vidyate na kadācana ।
yattāndṛṣṭvā prasīdanto rakṣeyurvahnayaḥ sadā ॥ 3.163 ॥

English

Fear of calamity by fire never exists for them at any time,
for seeing them, the fires are pleased and protect them always.

Purport

Fire first among the practical dangers. In a valley of timber-framed brick houses packed wall to wall, this was the fear that kept people awake.

akāla maraṇādbhītisteṣānnavidyate kvacit ।
yadyamo'pi samālokya rakṣati tān prasāditaḥ ॥ 3.164 ॥

English

Fear of untimely death exists for them nowhere,
for even Yama, beholding them, is pleased and protects them.

Purport

Yama is the god of death and the judge of the dead. The verse does not promise that they will not die, only that they will not die before their time.

rākṣasebhyo bhayaṁ teṣāṁ vidyate na samantataḥ ।
yadvāyavo'pi tān vījya rakṣeyuḥ sarvadānugāḥ ॥ 3.165 ॥

English

Fear of Rākṣasas does not exist for them on any side,
for even the winds, fanning them, protect them and attend them always.

Purport

A pleasant image sits inside a verse about demons: the wind cools them as it goes past, and stays.

yakṣasyāpi bhayaṁ teṣāṁ vidyate na sadā kvacit ।
yakṣāḥ samīkṣya rakṣeyuḥ sarve yakṣādhipā api ॥ 3.166 ॥

English

Fear of Yakṣas never exists for them anywhere,
for the Yakṣas and all the lords of Yakṣas, beholding them, protect them.

Purport

Yakṣas are nature spirits, generally benign and occasionally dangerous. In the valley they are attached to particular trees, springs and stones.

bhūtebhyo'pi bhayanteṣāṁ vidyate na samantataḥ ।
yadīśānopi tānpaśyan saṁrakṣetsaṁpramoditaḥ ॥ 3.167 ॥

English

Fear of the spirits does not exist for them on any side,
for even Īśāna, seeing them, protects them with delight.

Purport

Īśāna is a form of Śiva and the lord of the spirit hordes. He is guarding, in this verse, the followers of a Buddhist shrine.

gandharvotpātato bhītisteṣāṁ na vidyate kvacit ।
dhṛtarāṣṭro'pi tānpaśyatsaṁrakṣetsaṁ prasāditaḥ ॥ 3.168 ॥

English

Fear of calamity by Gandharvas exists for them nowhere,
for Dhṛtarāṣṭra too, beholding them, is pleased and protects them.

Purport

The four Great Kings of the directions now appear one by one, each with the class of beings he rules. Dhṛtarāṣṭra guards the east and commands the gandharvas.

kumbhāṇḍebhyo'pi nāstyevaṁ bhayanteṣāṁ kadācana ।
viruḍhako hi tān paśyannabhirakṣet prasādataḥ ॥ 3.169 ॥

English

Nor is there ever any fear of the Kumbhāṇḍas for them,
for Virūḍhaka, seeing them, protects them out of favour.

Purport

Virūḍhaka guards the south with his kumbhāṇḍas. He appeared in chapter two among the worshippers at the lake.

nāgebhyo'pi bhayanteṣāṁ vidyate na sadā kvacit ।
virupākṣo hi sampaśyaṁstānrakṣansamprasāditaḥ ॥ 3.170 ॥

English

Fear of the Nāgas never exists for them anywhere,
for Virūpākṣa, beholding them, protects them out of favour.

Purport

Virūpākṣa guards the west and rules the nāgas, whose lake was drained earlier in this very chapter. That the nāgas are listed as protectors rather than as an aggrieved party is quietly significant.

yakṣebhyo'pi sadā teṣāṁ vidyate na bhayaṁ kvacit ।

Purport

Kubera guards the north, and the four Great Kings are complete. The valley is now protected on every side.

English

Nor is there ever any fear of the Kinnaras for them,
for Druma, beholding those great beings, is pleased.

Purport

Druma the kinnara king, who came to the lake with his musicians in chapter two, stands guard here.

English

Nor is there any fear of the Guhyakas for those who follow the true Dharma,
for Vajrapāṇi, seeing them, is always pleased.

Purport

Vajrapāṇi is among the three great protectors of Nepali Buddhism alongside Mañjuśrī and Avalokiteśvara, and he is the most appropriate guardian in this list.

tathā vidyādharebhyo'pi bhayanteṣānna vidyate ।
yataḥ sarvārthasiddho'pi sampaśyaṁstānavetsadā ॥ 3.174 ॥

English

So too no fear of the Vidyādharas exists for them,
since Sarvārthasiddha too, beholding them, protects them always.

Purport

The lord of the sky-wanderers, also named among the worshippers in chapter two.

grahotpāta bhayanteṣāṁ vidyate na kadācana ।
grahādhipāhi sarve'pi samīkṣya tānavetsadā ॥ 3.175 ॥

English

Fear of calamity from the planets never exists for them,
for all the lords of the planets, beholding them, protect them always.

Purport

Astrological affliction was a live and daily anxiety, and remains one in the valley. This verse addresses it directly.

tathā tārāgaṇotpātabhayaṁ teṣāṁ na vidyate ।
sarvāstā rāhi tānvīkṣya sarvatrā veyurābhavam ॥ 3.176 ॥

English

So too no fear of calamity from the hosts of stars exists for them,
for all the stars, beholding them, protect them everywhere lifelong.

Purport

The constellations, which in chapters one and two left their places to come and worship, are now watching over the worshippers.

siddhāḥ sādhyāścarudrāśca vīkṣyāveyuḥ sadāpi tān ।
tattebhyopi bhayaṁ kvāpi teṣāṁ nāsti kadācana ॥ 3.177 ॥

English

The Siddhas, Sādhyas and Rudras too, beholding them, protect them always,
and so from them too no fear exists for them anywhere at any time.

Purport

The Rudras are the fierce forms of Śiva, and their inclusion keeps the litany's pattern: the more dangerous the being, the more welcome as a guardian.

tathā ca mātṛkotpātabhayaṁ nāsti kadācana ।
sarvā hi mātṛkāstāndṛṣṭvā rakṣeyustān prasāditāḥ ॥ 3.178 ॥

English

So too no fear of calamity from the Mother goddesses exists at any time,
for all the Mothers, seeing them, are pleased and protect them.

Purport

The Mātṛkās are the eight or nine mother goddesses whose open-air shrines ring every Newar town and mark its boundaries. They are among the most feared and most courted deities in the valley.

mahākālo gaṇeśaḥ skandaśca bhairavā api ।
sarvadā tānsamālokya rakṣeyuḥ saṁprasāditāḥ ॥ 3.179 ॥

English

Mahākāla, Gaṇeśa, Skanda and the Bhairavas too,
beholding them always, are pleased and protect them.

Purport

Four deities every visitor to Kathmandu meets within an hour of arriving. Mahākāla and the Bhairavas have great shrines in the city, and Gaṇeśa stands at almost every crossroads.

pretā bhūtāḥ piśācāśca vetālāḥ ḍākinīgaṇāḥ ।
api tānsarvadālokya saṁrakṣeyuḥ prasāditāḥ ॥ 3.180 ॥

English

Pretas, spirits and Piśācas, Vetālas and the hosts of Ḍākinīs
too, beholding them always, are pleased and protect them.

Purport

The frightening end of the list: hungry ghosts, flesh-eaters, animated corpses and the ḍākinīs. Even these are turned into guardians rather than driven off.

tebhyo'pi bhayaṁ teṣāṁ vidyate na kadācana ।
sarve'pi te sahāyāḥ syuḥ saṁvodhi dharmmasādhane ॥ 3.181 ॥

English

From them too no fear exists for them at any time,
and all of them become helpers in the practice of awakening and the Dharma.

Purport

This is the turn that makes the whole litany worth reading. The ghosts do not merely stop being dangerous; they start helping. Nothing in this poem's world is finally outside the project.

siṁhādi sarvajantubhyaḥ pakṣibhyo'pi samantataḥ ।
sarpādi kṛmikīṭebhyo bhayanteṣāṁ sadāpi na ॥ 3.182 ॥

English

From lions and all wild creatures, and from birds on every side,
and from snakes, worms and insects, they never have any fear.

Purport

After the demons, the ordinary hazards of a Himalayan valley. Snakebite killed more people than ghosts ever did.

duṣṭa pratyarthikebhyo'pi taskarebhyopi sarvataḥ ।
śatrubhyo'pi bhayanteṣāṁ vidyate na samantataḥ ॥ 3.183 ॥

English

From wicked adversaries too, and from thieves on every side,
and from enemies, no fear exists for them anywhere.

Purport

The last fears on the list are human ones, and the poet puts them after the animals and the ghosts, which may be a comment.

yadetatpuṇyaliptāṁstānsamīkṣya te prasāditāḥ ।
sarve maitrī kṛpā sneha nibaddhāḥ syurhitārthinaḥ ॥ 3.184 ॥

English

For, smeared with that merit, those who behold them are made gracious,
and all, bound by friendliness, compassion and affection, seek their good.

Purport

The explanation for the entire litany. Merit is not a shield. It changes how others see the person carrying it, and the change in them is the protection.

evaṁ sarve'pi satvāstāndṛṣṭvā saṁprasāditāḥ ।
snigdhacittāprasannāsyāḥ paśyeyurmaitrībhāvataḥ ॥ 3.185 ॥

English

So too all beings, seeing them, are made gracious,
and with tender hearts and serene faces, look on them with friendliness.

Purport

The litany of fears turns into a catalogue of welcome, and it will run through every rank of society for the next nine verses.

rājāno'pi ca tāndṛṣṭvā maitrīsnehasaṁbhāvitāḥ ।
suprasannāśayāḥ prītā mānayeyuḥ sadā mudā ॥ 3.186 ॥

English

Kings too, seeing them, are filled with friendliness and affection,
and with serene and delighted hearts honour them always with joy.

Purport

For a devotee under an eighteenth-century Malla or early Shah king, the goodwill of the palace was not an abstract blessing.

mantriṇo'pi sadā teṣāṁ maitrīsneha saṁbhāṣitāḥ ।
mānayeyuryathākāmaṁ saddharmma vratasādhanam ॥ 3.187 ॥

English

Ministers too speak to them always with friendliness and affection,
and honour at will their practice of the vow of the true Dharma.

Purport

Not only the king but the officials under him. The verse is describing patronage, which is how religious institutions in the valley actually survived.

brāhmaṇā api sarve ca teṣāṁ saddharmma sādhanam ।
dṛṣṭvānumoditātmāno dadhyurbhadrāśiṣaṁ sadā ॥ 3.188 ॥

English

And all the brahmins too, seeing their practice of the true Dharma,
rejoice in their hearts and always give them their blessing.

Purport

Brahmins blessing Buddhist practitioners. The poem has been putting the two traditions in the same room since chapter one, and here it has them approving of each other.

ṛṣayo'pi tathā sarve tāndṛṣṭvā saṁprasāditāḥ ।
paśyantaḥ kṛpayā dṛṣṭyā modayeyuḥ śubhāśiṣā ॥ 3.189 ॥

English

So too all the seers, beholding them, are made gracious,
and looking on them with compassion, gladden them with kind blessings.

Purport

A blessing given by a seer carried weight across sectarian lines, which is precisely why the poet includes it.

evaṁ ca yoginaḥ siddhā yatayo brahmacāriṇaḥ ।
tīrthikāstāpasāścāpi vratinaścāpyupāsakāḥ ॥ 3.190 ॥

English

So too yogins and Siddhas, renunciates and celibate practitioners,
tīrthikas and ascetics, keepers of vows and lay devotees,

Purport

The catalogue of practitioners once more, this time as well-wishers rather than as an audience.

cailakā bhikṣavaścāpi bhikṣuṇyaścāpyupāsikāḥ ।
api tānsudṛśālokya nandayeyuḥ śubhāśiṣāḥ ॥ 3.191 ॥

English

cailakas and monks, nuns and laywomen too,
beholding them with kindly eyes, gladden them with good blessings.

Purport

The list is the same as ever and women are named in it as they always are.

evaṁ ca śrāvakāḥ sarve pratyeka sugatā api ।
bodhisattvāśca sarve'pi tān dṛṣṭvā saṁprasāditāḥ ॥ 3.192 ॥

English

So too all the disciples and the solitary Buddhas,
and all the Bodhisattvas, seeing them, are made gracious.

Purport

The ladder of welcome now climbs past ordinary people into the ranks of the awakened.

kṛpayā dṛṣṭvānupaśyanto maitrī snehasubhāvinaḥ ।
rakṣitvā bodhimārgeṣu niyojayeyuḥ sadā bhavam ॥ 3.193 ॥

English

looking on them with compassion, full of friendliness and affection,
and guarding them, they keep them always upon the paths of awakening.

Purport

The protection offered by bodhisattvas is different in kind from the protection offered by ghosts. They do not keep a person safe; they keep a person on the road.

evaṁ sarve'pi saṁbuddhā dṛṣṭvā tānsaṁprasāditāḥ ।
sarvadā kṛpayā rakṣeyuścārayeyurjjagaddhite ॥ 3.194 ॥

English

So too all the Perfect Buddhas, seeing them, are made gracious,
and guarding them always with compassion, set them to work for the world's welfare.

Purport

The catalogue ends at the top, and the final verb is not 'protect' but 'set to work'. Being looked after by Buddhas means being given something to do.

evaṁ teṣāṁ mahatpuṇyaṁ sambuddha padasādhanam ।
bhadraśrīguṇasaṁpatti samṛddhi siddhisaṁpradam ॥ 3.195 ॥

English

Thus great is their merit, which accomplishes the state of a Perfect Buddha,
and which bestows glory, virtue, abundance, prosperity and accomplishment.

Purport

Both kinds of reward named together in one line, the worldly and the final. The poem has never treated them as being in competition.

evaṁ yūyamapi jñātvā sarvadā śaraṇāśritāḥ ।
yathāśakti samabhyarcya bhajataitāṁstriratnikān ॥ 3.196 ॥

English

So you too, knowing this, taking refuge always,
worship these Three Jewels according to your means.

Purport

Here the three are named as the Three Jewels of this place: the goddess, the shrine and the teacher. And 'according to your means' returns one last time.

smṛtvā dhyātvāpi nāmāpi samuccārya sadā mudā ।
eṣāmeva triratnānāṁ bhajadhvaṁ śaraṇe sthitā ॥ 3.197 ॥

English

Remembering, meditating, and uttering even their names, always with joy,
worship these Three Jewels and stand in their refuge.

Purport

The smallest possible act named for the last time. Say the name, and that is enough to begin.

etatpuṇyaviliptā ye pariśuddhatrimaṇḍalāḥ ।
bhadraśrīguṇasaṁpannā bhaveyuste śubhāśayāḥ ॥ 3.198 ॥

English

Those who are smeared with that merit, their three spheres wholly pure,
endowed with glory and virtue, become pure of heart.

Purport

Smeared with merit again, the physical image from chapter two. Merit rubs off on whoever comes close.

durgatiṁ te na gaccheyuḥ sadā sadgatisaṁbhavāḥ ।
bodhisattvā mahāsattvā bhaveyurbhadracāriṇaḥ ॥ 3.199 ॥

English

They do not go to an evil destiny, but are always born in fortunate states;
Bodhisattvas and great beings, they become walkers of the noble path.

तिनीहरू दुर्गतिमा जाँदैनन्, सधैँ सद्गतिमा जन्मिन्छन्;

Purport

The refrain for the last time in this chapter.

tataste sarvasattvānāṁ hitārtha sādhanodyatāḥ ।
sudhīrā bodhisambhāraṁ pūrayitvā yathākramam ॥ 3.200 ॥

English

Then, steadfast and devoted to accomplishing the welfare of all beings,
fulfilling in due order the accumulations for awakening,

Purport

The gradual road once more. In three chapters the poem has never once offered a shortcut.

tato māragaṇāñjitvā niḥkleśā vijitendriyāḥ ।
arhantastrividhāṁ bodhiṁ prāpya yāyurjinālayam ॥ 3.201 ॥

English

then, conquering the hosts of Māra, free of defilement, their senses mastered,
Arhats, attaining the threefold awakening, they go to the abode of the Jina.

Purport

The destination named in the same words at the end of all three chapters.

etatsarvaṁ mayā khyātaṁ sarvairapi munīśvaraiḥ ।
śrutvānumodanāṁ kṛtvā pracaradhvaṁ sadāśubhe ॥ 3.202 ॥

English

All this has been told by me as it was declared by all the Lords of Sages.
Having heard it and given your assent, walk always in what is good.

Purport

The teaching ends with the narrator naming his source one last time, and with an instruction that asks for nothing more than walking well.

ityādiṣṭaṁ munīndreṇa niśamya te sabhāśritāḥ ।
sarve tathānumodantaḥ prāpyānandaṁ prabodhitāḥ ॥ 3.203 ॥

English

When the Lord of Sages had thus instructed, hearing it, all those gathered there
gave their assent, and awakened, attained delight.

Purport

The chapter closes as the other two did, with an assembly gladdened. Between the first verse and this one a lake has been cut open with a sword, a valley has been made, a goddess has risen out of the drained ground, and the man who did it has stayed on to live there.

iti śrī svayambhūtpattisamuddeśa mahāhrada śoṣaṇa dharmmadhātu padmagirisaṁprasthāpano nāma tṛtīyo'dhyāyaḥ ।

Thus ends the third chapter of the account of the origin of Swayambhu, called the draining of the great lake and the establishing of the Dharmadhātu upon Padmagiri.
