Swayambhu Purana

Chapter Five: The Many Holy Fords and Their Merit

149 verses, complete. Sanskrit, transliteration, English, Nepali, and a purport.

This is the fifth chapter of the Swayambhu Purana, and it maps the water of the Kathmandu Valley. Chapter four ended by telling the people of the new country to bathe in its holy fords, and Maitreya asks which ford does what. The answer names twelve principal confluences, each with its own name, its own resident serpent king and its own gift, then a second group of sites upstream, and finally the source of the Bagmati itself, which the poem ranks above every other water on earth. The rule underneath it all is stated only near the end: wherever two streams meet, there is a ford.

Every verse is given in five layers: the Sanskrit, a Roman transliteration you can read aloud, a literal English translation, a Nepali translation, and a purport that explains what is happening and why it matters. Use the buttons below to show only the layers you want. For the narrative alone, keep the purport and turn the rest off. Your choice is remembered as you move between chapters.

athāsau ca mahāsattvo maitreyaḥ sāñjalirmudā ।
bhagavantaṁ tamānamya prārthayedevamādarāt ॥ 5.1 ॥

English

Then that great being Maitreya, joyfully with folded hands,
bowing to the Blessed One, made this request with reverence:

Purport

The fifth chapter opens where the fourth ended. Chapter four finished by telling the people of the valley to bathe in its holy fords. Maitreya now asks the obvious follow-up question, the same kind he asked in chapter two about the offerings at the stupa.

bhagavan tatra tīrthānāṁ snātvā dānādi karmmajam ।
puṇyaphala viśeṣatvaṁ samādiśatu sāmpratam ॥ 5.2 ॥

English

Blessed One, of the fruits of merit born of bathing at those holy fords,
and of giving and the other acts, may you now teach the particulars.

Purport

Not whether the rivers are holy, but which one does what. The whole chapter is an answer to that, and it makes this the poem's gazetteer of the valley's sacred water.

iti saṁprārthite tena bhagavānsa munīśvaraḥ ।
maitreyaṁ taṁ mahāsattvaṁ sampaśyannevamādiśat ॥ 5.3 ॥

English

Thus entreated by him, that Blessed Lord of Sages,
looking upon the great being Maitreya, instructed thus:

Purport

Request, gaze, answer, for the fifth chapter running.

sādhu śṛṇu mahāsattva tīrtha sevā phalodbhavam ।
puṇyaṁ tadviśeṣatvaṁ vakṣyāmi sarvabodhane ॥ 5.4 ॥

English

Listen well, great being, to the merit that arises as the fruit of serving the fords,
and its particulars, which I shall tell for the awakening of all.

Purport

Serving a ford, not merely visiting one. The word implies regular attendance rather than a single pilgrimage, and the chapter will prescribe exactly how long.

tadyathā mūlatīrthāni kathyante dvādaśātra hi ।
mahāpuṇyāni sarveṣāṁ tīrthānāṁ yāni bhūtale ॥ 5.5 ॥

English

Thus: twelve root fords are declared here,
of great merit among all the fords upon the earth.

Purport

Twelve principal fords, each at a river confluence, each with a name, a resident serpent king and a specific gift. What follows is the earliest systematic list of them in the poem, and the structure of each entry is identical, which makes the differences between them easy to see.

amogha phaladāyinyāṁ vāgmatyāṁ yatra saṁgame ।
tattīrtha śodhanaṁ khyātaṁ daśapāpaviśodhanāt ॥ 5.6 ॥

English

At the confluence with the Vāgmatī, giver of unfailing fruit,
that ford is renowned as Śodhana, from its purifying of the ten sins.

Purport

The first of the twelve, and its name simply means 'cleansing'. The ten sins are the standard list of three of body, four of speech and three of mind: killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, slander, harsh speech, idle talk, covetousness, ill will and wrong view.

tatra nāgādhipo raktastakṣakākhyaḥ sukāntimān ।
samujjvalanmahāratnaśrīmatphaṇā vibhūṣitaḥ ॥ 5.7 ॥

English

There the serpent lord is red, named Takṣaka, of lovely appearance,
adorned with a glorious hood blazing with great jewels.

Purport

Takṣaka is one of the eight great serpent kings of Indian tradition. Each of the twelve fords in this chapter has one, and each is given a colour, which in Newar practice determines the colour of the cloth and pigment used in his worship.

ye narāḥ śraddhayā tatra puṇyatīrthe yathāvidhiḥ ।
snānaṁ kuryurmudā yāvadeka viṁśati vāsaram ॥ 5.8 ॥

English

Those who with faith at that holy ford, according to the rule,
joyfully bathe for as many as twenty-one days,

Purport

Twenty-one days is the observance, and it will be prescribed at every one of the twelve. It is long enough to be a real commitment and short enough that an ordinary householder could manage it once in a life.

japa yajñādi karmmāṇi kuryuḥ saptadinānyapi ।
pitṝn devāñca saṁpūjya kuryuḥ saṁtṛptamoditān ॥ 5.9 ॥

English

and perform recitation, sacrifice and other rites for seven days,
and worshipping the ancestors and the gods, satisfy and gladden them,

Purport

Seven days of rites inside the twenty-one of bathing. The offering to the ancestors is a Hindu rite, prescribed here by a Buddha, exactly as it was in chapter four.

dadyurdānāni cārthibhyo yathepsitaṁ samādarāt ।
śuddhaśīlāḥ samādhāya careyuśca vrataṁ tathā ॥ 5.10 ॥

English

and give gifts to those who ask, as they desire, with reverence,
and pure in conduct, with settled minds, keep the vow as well,

Purport

Bathing, rites, ancestors, giving and the vow. Five acts, and the same five will be named at each of the twelve fords, sometimes abbreviated to 'as before'.

etatpuṇyaviśuddhāste niḥkleśā nirmmalendriyāḥ ।
bodhisattvā mahāsattvā bhaveyuḥ śrī guṇāśrayāḥ ॥ 5.11 ॥

English

they, purified by that merit, free of defilement, clear in their faculties,
become Bodhisattvas and great beings, vessels of glory and virtue.

Purport

Each entry ends the same way, with the bather set on the bodhisattva path. The specific gift of each ford is a bonus rather than the point.

tataste bodhisambhāraṁ pūrayitvāyathākramam ।
trividhāṁ bodhimāsādya saṁbuddha padamāpnuyuḥ ॥ 5.12 ॥

English

Then, fulfilling the accumulations for awakening in due order,
attaining the threefold awakening, they reach the state of a Perfect Buddha.

Purport

The closing formula of the first entry, which will now repeat eleven more times. In a chanted text this kind of refrain is what holds a long list together.

tataśca māradāyiṇyo vāgmatyā yatra saṁgamaḥ ।
tacchāntatīrthamākhyātaṁ kleśa doṣa viśodhanam ॥ 5.13 ॥

English

Then, where the Māradāyinī joins the Vāgmatī,
that ford is declared to be Śānta, purifier of defilement and fault.

Purport

The second of the twelve. Śānta means 'at peace', and what it cleanses is not action but the inner state behind it.

tatranāgādhipaḥ śuklaḥ soma śikhītiviśrutaḥ ।
vilasanmaṇiratnaśrīphaṇāmaṇḍala bhūṣitaḥ ॥ 5.14 ॥

English

There the serpent lord is white, renowned as Somaśikhī,
adorned with a circle of hoods glorious with shining gems.

Purport

Somaśikhī means 'moon-crested', which suits a white serpent at a ford named for peace. The poet matches colour, name and gift at each site.

tatrāpi śāntatīrthe ca ye kleśadūṣitā narāḥ ।
kuryuḥ snānaṁ sadā yāvadekaviṁśati vāsaram ॥ 5.15 ॥

English

There too at the Śānta ford, those people afflicted by defilement
who bathe always, for as many as twenty-one days,

Purport

The one entry in the chapter that names who the ford is for. This one is for people in distress, and the poem says so plainly.

japa yajñādikaṁ kuryuścareyuścāpi poṣadham ।
pitṝn devāñca saṁpūjya kuryuḥ saṁtuṣṭananditān ॥ 5.16 ॥

English

and perform recitation, sacrifice and the rest, and keep the fasting vow,
and worshipping the ancestors and the gods, make them content and glad,

Purport

The upoṣadha fast, prescribed in chapter one as the first practical step of the bodhisattva vow, is folded into the river observance here.

dadyurdānāni cārthibhyo yathābhilaṣitaṁ mudā ।
śuddhaśīlāḥ samācārāḥ dhyātvā bhajeyurīśvaram ॥ 5.17 ॥

English

and give gifts to those who ask, as they wish, with joy,
and pure in conduct and behaviour, meditating, worship the Lord,

Purport

Īśvara, the Lord, is a word from the Śaiva vocabulary. Chapters four and five use it freely for the objects of worship in the valley.

etatpuṇyābhiliptāste pariśuddha trimaṇḍalāḥ ।
bodhisattvā mahāsattvā bhaveyuḥ śrīguṇālayāḥ ॥ 5.18 ॥

English

they, smeared with that merit, their three spheres wholly pure,
become Bodhisattvas and great beings, dwellings of glory and virtue.

Purport

Smeared with merit, the physical image the poem has used since chapter two. Merit rubs off on whoever comes close to it.

tataste bodhi sambhāraṁ pūrayitvā yathākramam ।
arhanta strividhāmbodhi prāpyeyuḥ saugataṁ padam ॥ 5.19 ॥

English

Then, fulfilling the accumulations for awakening in due order,
as Arhats, attaining the threefold awakening, they reach the state of the Sugata.

Purport

The second entry closes. From here the pattern is fixed and the reader can attend to what changes rather than what repeats.

tataśca maṇirohiṇyā vāgmatyā yatrasaṁgame ।
tatrorddhaniḥsṛtā śuddha sphaṭikādārasaṁnnibhām ॥ 5.20 ॥

English

Then, where the Maṇirohiṇī joins the Vāgmatī,
there flows down from above a stream clear as pure crystal,

Purport

The third site is the most complicated of the twelve, because three waters meet there rather than two. The third is a stream falling from above, and the next verse names it.

rudradhārāmṛtākhyātā tayā ca tatra saṁgame ।
triveṇī saṁgame tena śaṁkaratīrthamucyate ॥ 5.21 ॥

English

called the Rudradhārā; and where it too joins at that confluence,
at that meeting of three streams the ford is called Śaṅkara.

Purport

Rudradhārā is Śiva's stream, and Śaṅkara is Śiva's name. A triveṇī, the meeting of three waters, is the holiest kind of confluence in Indian sacred geography, and there is one on the Bagmati above Pashupatinath.

tatra nāgādhipaḥ śaṁkhapālo gaurāti sundaraḥ ।
maṇiraśmisamuddīpta śrīmatphaṇā vibhūṣitaḥ ॥ 5.22 ॥

English

There the serpent lord is Śaṅkhapāla, exceedingly fair and beautiful,
adorned with a glorious hood blazing with the rays of gems.

Purport

Śaṅkhapāla, 'conch-keeper', is another of the eight great serpent kings, and his name links this ford to the Conch Hill where the river rises.

tatra śaṁkara tīrthe ye mānavāśca yathāvidhiḥ ।
snānaṁ kuryurmudā yāvadekaviṁśativāsaram ॥ 5.23 ॥

English

Those people who at that Śaṅkara ford, according to the rule,
joyfully bathe for as many as twenty-one days,

Purport

The same twenty-one days. The poem is describing an observance that could be kept at any of these sites, not a separate rite for each.

japa yajñādikarmmāṇi kuryuśca saptavāsaram ।
pitṝndevāñca saṁpūjya tarppayeyuryathāvidhi ॥ 5.24 ॥

English

and perform recitation, sacrifice and the rest for seven days,
and worshipping the ancestors and the gods, make offering to them according to the rule,

Purport

Tarpaṇa at a triveṇī is still among the most sought-after rites in the valley, particularly for the recently dead.

dadyurdānāni cārthibhya śraddhayā bodhimānasāḥ ।
dhyātvā bhajeyurīśaṁ ca saṁcareyuśca poṣadham ॥ 5.25 ॥

English

and give gifts to those who ask, with faith and minds set on awakening,
and meditating, worship the Lord and keep the fasting vow,

Purport

'With minds set on awakening' is the phrase that makes all of this Buddhist practice rather than simply river ritual.

etatpuṇya viśuddhātmāno niḥkleśā nirmmalendriyāḥ ।
labheyuḥ śrī mahāpuṣṭiṁ śāntiguṇāṁśca śāntyapi ॥ 5.26 ॥

English

they, purified in self by that merit, free of defilement, clear in their faculties,
gain glory, great nourishment, the virtue of peace, and peace itself.

Purport

Puṣṭi and śānti, nourishment and peace, are the two classical aims of Vedic ritual. This is the first of the twelve fords whose gift is named in those terms, and it matches its Śaiva name.

durggatiṁ te na yāyuśca saṁjātāḥ saṅgatau sadā ।
bodhisattvā mahāsattvā bhaveyurbhadracāriṇaḥ ॥ 5.27 ॥

English

Nor do they go to an evil destiny, but are always born in fortunate states;
they become Bodhisattvas and great beings, walkers of the noble path.

तिनीहरू दुर्गतिमा जाँदैनन्, सधैँ सद्गतिमा जन्मिन्छन्;

Purport

The guarantee that runs through all five chapters, attached here to a river rather than a shrine.

tataste bodhisaṁbhāraṁ pūrayitvā yathākramam ।
arhanta strividhāṁ bodhi prāpyeyuḥ saugataṁ padam ॥ 5.28 ॥

English

Then, fulfilling the accumulations for awakening in due order,
as Arhats, attaining the threefold awakening, they reach the state of the Sugata.

Purport

The third entry closes.

tataśca rājamañcaryā vāgmatyā yatra saṁgame ।
tadrājatīrthamākhyātaṁ rājyārogyasukhapadam ॥ 5.29 ॥

English

Then, where the Rājamañcarī joins the Vāgmatī,
that ford is declared to be Rāja, the seat of kingship, health and happiness.

Purport

The fourth of the twelve, and its gifts are the most worldly so far: a throne, good health and comfort. The poem has never treated these as lesser things to want.

tatra nāgādhipaḥ śuklaḥ surūpākhyātisundaraḥ ।
maṇiratna mahādīpti śrīprabhā maṇḍitāśrayaḥ ॥ 5.30 ॥

English

There the serpent lord is white, named Surūpa, exceedingly beautiful,
his seat adorned with the great blaze and glorious radiance of gems.

Purport

Surūpa simply means 'well-formed'. The names of these serpent kings are half description and half title.

tatra ye mānavā yāvadeka viṁśativāsaram ।
snāna dāna japa dhyānaṁ kuryurdadyuśca saṁvaram ॥ 5.31 ॥

English

Those people there who for as many as twenty-one days
perform bathing, giving, recitation and meditation, and keep the vow,

Purport

The observance is compressed into one verse here. From this point the poet abbreviates, trusting the reader to supply the rest.

etatpuṇya viśuddhāste nirdoṣā vimalendriyāḥ ।
rājyaiśvaryaṁ sadārogyaṁ bhadrasaukhyamavāpnuyuḥ ॥ 5.32 ॥

English

they, purified by that merit, free of fault, clear in their faculties,
obtain kingship and sovereignty, lasting health, good fortune and happiness.

Purport

Health is named twice in this entry, once in the ford's description and once in its fruit. Somebody wanted that particular blessing recorded.

te'pi na durggatiṁ yāyuḥ sadāsadgati saṁbhavāḥ ।
bodhisattvā mahāsattvā bhaveyuḥ śrīguṇāśrayāḥ ॥ 5.33 ॥

English

They too do not go to an evil destiny, but are always born in fortunate states;
they become Bodhisattvas and great beings, vessels of glory and virtue.

तिनीहरू पनि दुर्गतिमा जाँदैनन्, सधैँ सद्गतिमा जन्मिन्छन्;

Purport

The refrain. Whatever else a ford gives, it gives this.

tataste bodhisambhāraṁ pūrayitvā yathākramam ।
arhanta strividhāṁ bodhiṁ prāpya yāyurjinālayam ॥ 5.34 ॥

English

Then, fulfilling the accumulations for awakening in due order,
as Arhats, attaining the threefold awakening, they go to the abode of the Jina.

Purport

The fourth entry closes. A third of the list is done.

tathātra vimalāvatyā keśāvatyā ca saṁgame ।
manorathaṁ tadākhyātaṁ svecchālaṁkāra saṁpradam ॥ 5.35 ॥

English

So too here, at the confluence of the Vimalāvatī with the Keśāvatī,
that ford is declared to be Manoratha, giver of adornment at will.

Purport

The fifth is the first on the Keśāvatī, the river now called the Bishnumati, which runs down the west side of Kathmandu past Swayambhu. Manoratha means 'heart's desire'.

tatra nāgādhipo bhīmaḥ kulikākhyo'tikarburaḥ ।
phaṇāmaṇi samuddīpta śrīprabhāmaṇḍitāśrayaḥ ॥ 5.36 ॥

English

There the serpent lord is Bhīma, named Kulika, of many colours,
his seat adorned with the glorious radiance of the gems blazing on his hood.

Purport

Kulika is the last of the eight great serpent kings, and the only one in this chapter described as many-coloured rather than a single colour.

tatra manorathe tīrthe manujā ye yathāvidhiḥ ।
snāna dānādikaṁ kuryurekaviṁśati vāsaram ॥ 5.37 ॥

English

Those people who at that Manoratha ford, according to the rule,
perform bathing, giving and the rest for twenty-one days,

Purport

The formula now runs at its shortest. The poet has established it and can rely on it.

te'pi na durgatiṁ yāyuḥ sadā sadgatisaṁbhavāḥ ।
bodhisattvā mahāsattvā bhadraśrī sadguṇāśrayāḥ ॥ 5.38 ॥

English

they too do not go to an evil destiny, but are always born in fortunate states;
Bodhisattvas and great beings, vessels of glory and true virtue,

तिनीहरू पनि दुर्गतिमा जाँदैनन्, सधैँ सद्गतिमा जन्मिन्छन्;

Purport

The refrain, and then the specific gift of this ford follows in the next verse.

paṭṭasuvastraratnādi svecchālaṁkārabhūṣitāḥ ।
sarvasattva hitādhānaṁ careyurbodhisaṁvaram ॥ 5.39 ॥

English

adorned with silk, fine cloth, jewels and ornaments as they wish,
they keep the vow of awakening, holding the welfare of all beings.

Purport

Silk and jewels in the first line, the welfare of all beings in the second, and the poem sees no tension between them. This is exactly the attitude chapter two took in its catalogue of offerings.

tataste bodhisaṁbhāraṁ pūrayitvā yathākramam ।
trividhāṁ bodhimāsādya saṁbuddha padamāpnuyuḥ ॥ 5.40 ॥

English

Then, fulfilling the accumulations for awakening in due order,
attaining the threefold awakening, they reach the state of a Perfect Buddha.

Purport

The fifth entry closes.

tataśca kusumāvatyā keśāvatyāpi saṁgame ।
nirmmalatīrthamākhyātaṁ kalpanāvighnanāśanam ॥ 5.41 ॥

English

Then, at the confluence of the Kusumāvatī with the Keśāvatī,
that ford is declared to be Nirmala, destroyer of the obstacles of the mind.

Purport

The sixth of the twelve. Nirmala means 'stainless', and what it removes is kalpanā, the mind's own constructions. It is the only ford in the list whose gift is psychological rather than material.

tatra nāgo'palālākhyaḥ pītavarṇṇo mahākṛtiḥ ।
divyaratna prabhojjvāla śrīmatphaṇā vibhūṣitaḥ ॥ 5.42 ॥

English

There the serpent is named Palāla, yellow in colour and great in form,
adorned with a glorious hood blazing with the light of divine gems.

Purport

Palāla is not one of the eight classical serpent kings, which makes him a local figure. Several of the nāgas in this chapter appear to belong to the valley rather than to the pan-Indian lists.

tatra ye mānavā yāvadekaviṁśativāsaram ।
snānadānādikaṁ kuryustathāsarve ca pūrvavat ॥ 5.43 ॥

English

Those people there who for as many as twenty-one days
perform bathing, giving and the rest, and all as before,

Purport

'All as before' is the poet saying openly that the observance does not change from ford to ford. Only the reward does.

te'pi na durgatiṁ yāyuḥ sadā saṅgatisaṁbhavāḥ ।
bodhisattvā mahāsattvā bhadraśrīsadguṇāśrayāḥ ॥ 5.44 ॥

English

they too do not go to an evil destiny, but are always born in fortunate states;
Bodhisattvas and great beings, vessels of glory and true virtue,

तिनीहरू पनि दुर्गतिमा जाँदैनन्, सधैँ सद्गतिमा जन्मिन्छन्;

Purport

The refrain again, and the particular gift of this ford comes in the verse after it.

kali vighna mala kleśa nirmukta bhadracāriṇaḥ ।
sarvasattva hitāraktā bhaveyurbrahmacāriṇaḥ ॥ 5.45 ॥

English

freed from the obstacles, stains and defilements of the Kali age, walkers of the noble path,
devoted to the welfare of all beings, they become celibate practitioners.

Purport

The Kali age is named directly. The poem's first readers were living in it, and a ford that clears away the specific afflictions of a bad age would have been worth the twenty-one days.

tataste bodhisaṁbhāraṁ pūrayitvā yathākramam ।
arhanto bodhimāsādya sambuddhapadamāpnuyuḥ ॥ 5.46 ॥

English

Then, fulfilling the accumulations for awakening in due order,
as Arhats, attaining awakening, they reach the state of a Perfect Buddha.

Purport

The sixth entry closes. Half the list is done.

tataḥ suvarṇṇavatyā ca vāgmatyā yatra saṁgame ।
nidhānatīrthamākhyātaṁ sarvasampattidāyakam ॥ 5.47 ॥

English

Then, where the Suvarṇavatī joins the Vāgmatī,
that ford is declared to be Nidhāna, giver of every kind of wealth.

Purport

The seventh. Suvarṇavatī means 'golden' and nidhāna means 'treasure hoard', so the name of the river and the gift of the ford agree with each other.

tatra nāgau haritavarṇau nandopanandanāvubhau ।
nānā ratna prabhoddīptiśrīmatphaṇāvibhūṣitau ॥ 5.48 ॥

English

There the two serpents are green, Nanda and Upananda both,
their glorious hoods blazing with the light of many jewels.

Purport

The only ford in the list with two serpents rather than one. Nanda and Upananda are a pair in Buddhist literature, and they appear together in the accounts of the Buddha's birth, where they bathe the newborn child.

tatra ye manujā yāvadeka viṁśativāsaram ।
snānādi pūrvavatsarvakarmma kuryuryathāvidhiḥ ॥ 5.49 ॥

English

Those people there who for as many as twenty-one days
perform bathing and all the other acts as before, according to the rule,

Purport

The abbreviated form once more.

te'pi na durggatiṁ yāyuḥ sadā saṅgatisaṁbhavāḥ ।
bodhisattvā mahāsattvā bhadraśrī sadguṇāśrayāḥ ॥ 5.50 ॥

English

they too do not go to an evil destiny, but are always born in fortunate states;
Bodhisattvas and great beings, vessels of glory and true virtue,

तिनीहरू पनि दुर्गतिमा जाँदैनन्, सधैँ सद्गतिमा जन्मिन्छन्;

Purport

The refrain.

sarvasattvārtha sampannā bhaveyurdharmmacāriṇaḥ ।
te'pyevaṁ bodhisaṁbhāraṁ pūrayitvā yathākramam ॥ 5.51 ॥

English

endowed with the good of all beings, they become walkers in the Dharma.
They too, fulfilling the accumulations for awakening in due order,

Purport

The ford that gives wealth has its reward described in terms of what the wealthy person then does. The poem is consistent about this.

arhanto bodhimāsādya saugataṁ padamāpnuyuḥ ।
tataśca pāpa nāśinyā keśāvatyābhisaṁgame ॥ 5.52 ॥

English

as Arhats, attaining awakening, reach the state of the Sugata.
Then, at the confluence of the Pāpanāśinī with the Keśāvatī,

Purport

The seventh entry closes and the eighth begins in the same verse. Pāpanāśinī means 'destroyer of sin', and it is one of the loveliest river names in the valley.

jñānatīrthaṁ tadākhyātaṁ divyabhoga sukhapradam ।
tatra nāgādhipaḥ śuklo vāsukirnāma bhīṣaṇaḥ ॥ 5.53 ॥

English

that ford is declared to be Jñāna, giver of divine enjoyment and ease.
There the serpent lord is white, named Vāsuki, terrible to behold,

Purport

Vāsuki is the greatest of all the serpent kings, the rope used to churn the ocean in the old myth. He is the only nāga in this chapter the poet calls frightening.

divya ratna prabhāśrī matphaṇālaṁkāramaṇḍitaḥ ।
tatra ye mānavā yāvadekaviṁśativāsaram ॥ 5.54 ॥

English

adorned with the ornament of a hood glorious with the light of divine gems.
Those people there who for as many as twenty-one days

Purport

Even the terrible one is described in terms of his jewellery. The poet's eye does not change.

snāna dānādi karmmāṇi kuryuḥ sarvāṇi pūrvavat ।
te'pi na durggatiṁ yāyurjātāḥ sadāpi saṅgatau ॥ 5.55 ॥

English

perform bathing, giving and all the other acts as before,
they too do not go to an evil destiny, but are born always in fortunate states;

तिनीहरू पनि दुर्गतिमा जाँदैनन्, सधैँ सद्गतिमा जन्मिन्छन्;

Purport

The formula, delivered now at speed. The chapter's rhythm has become the point.

sarva bhoga mahāsampatsukhavanto nirāmayāḥ ।
bodhisattvā mahāsattvāścaturbrahma vihāriṇaḥ ॥ 5.56 ॥

English

possessed of every enjoyment and great abundance, happy and free of disease,
Bodhisattvas and great beings, dwelling in the four Brahmavihāras,

Purport

The four brahmavihāras: kindness, compassion, joy in others' good fortune, and evenness of mind. They appear in every chapter of this poem.

bhadraśrīsadguṇādhārā bhaveyurbodhicāriṇaḥ ।
tathā te bodhisaṁbhāraṁ pūrayitvā yathākramam ॥ 5.57 ॥

English

vessels of glory and true virtue, they become walkers of the path to awakening.
So too they, fulfilling the accumulations for awakening in due order,

Purport

The eighth entry moves towards its close.

arhanto bodhimāsādya sarvajñapadamāpnuyuḥ ।
bhadraśrī sadguṇādhārāḥ sambuddhaguṇasādhinaḥ ॥ 5.58 ॥

English

as Arhats, attaining awakening, reach the state of the Omniscient,
vessels of glory and true virtue, accomplishers of the qualities of a Perfect Buddha.

Purport

The eighth closes, and the ninth is the most important ford in the chapter.

tataśca yatra vāgmatyāḥ keśāvatyā ca saṁgame ।
taccintāmaṇimākhyātaṁ sarvakāmārtha saṁpadam ॥ 5.59 ॥

English

Then, where the Vāgmatī and the Keśāvatī meet,
that is declared to be Cintāmaṇi, giver of every desire and aim.

Purport

This is Teku Dovan, where the Bishnumati runs into the Bagmati at the southern edge of old Kathmandu. It is the most important confluence in the city and has been a cremation ground and pilgrimage site for centuries. Cintāmaṇi is the wish-fulfilling jewel.

gaṁgā ca yamunācāpi tathā devī sarasvatī ।
parva pratyāgatā tatra tena pañcasamāgamaḥ ॥ 5.60 ॥

English

The Gaṅgā and the Yamunā, and the goddess Sarasvatī too,
come there at the festivals, and so it is a meeting of five.

Purport

An extraordinary claim, and a very Nepali one. The three rivers of the Prayag confluence are said to travel to Kathmandu on festival days, making Teku a meeting of five waters rather than two. A pilgrim who could not reach Allahabad could reach this.

tatra nāgādhipaḥ śuklo varuṇaḥ sarvanāgarāṭ ।
divyaratna prabhāśrīmatphaṇāmaṇḍala bhūṣitaḥ ॥ 5.61 ॥

English

There the serpent lord is white, Varuṇa, king of all the Nāgas,
adorned with a circle of hoods glorious with the light of divine gems.

Purport

Varuṇa is the ancient Vedic god of the waters, ruling here as king of all the serpents. The most important confluence in the list gets the most senior guardian.

tatra ye mānavā yāvadekaviṁśati vāsaram ।
snānadānādikaṁ sarve kuryuḥ pūrvavadādarāt ॥ 5.62 ॥

English

Those people there who for as many as twenty-one days
perform bathing, giving and the rest, all as before, with reverence,

Purport

The same observance at the greatest ford as at the smallest. The poem does not scale its demands to the site.

te'pi na durggatiṁ yāyuḥ sadā sadgatisaṁbhavāḥ ।
saṁpūrṇṇaparamāyuṣkāḥ vidyādhipā vicakṣaṇāḥ ॥ 5.63 ॥

English

they too do not go to an evil destiny, but are always born in fortunate states;
living out their full span of years, masters of knowledge and discerning,

तिनीहरू पनि दुर्गतिमा जाँदैनन्, सधैँ सद्गतिमा जन्मिन्छन्;

Purport

A full lifespan is named as a reward, which in a world of childhood mortality was not a small thing to promise.

susantānā mahābhogā dharmmārthakāmabhoginaḥ ।
bodhisattvā mahāsattvā ścaturbrahmavihāriṇaḥ ॥ 5.64 ॥

English

with good families and great enjoyments, enjoying Dharma, wealth and pleasure,
Bodhisattvas and great beings, dwelling in the four Brahmavihāras,

Purport

Dharma, wealth and pleasure named openly as things to enjoy, in the same line that makes the enjoyer a bodhisattva. The wish-fulfilling jewel grants wishes, and the poem does not apologise for that.

tataste bodhisaṁbhāraṁ pūrayitvā yathākramam ।
arhanto bodhimāsādya saṁbuddha padamāpnuyuḥ ॥ 5.65 ॥

English

Then, fulfilling the accumulations for awakening in due order,
as Arhats, attaining awakening, they reach the state of a Perfect Buddha.

Purport

The ninth entry closes.

tataśca yatra vāgmatyā ratnāvatyāḥ samāgame ।
pramodatīrthamākhyātaṁ ratiprītivaśārthadam ॥ 5.66 ॥

English

Then, where the Ratnāvatī meets the Vāgmatī,
that ford is declared to be Pramoda, giver of delight, love and mastery.

Purport

The tenth, and the only one in the list whose gift is happiness itself. Pramoda means 'gladness', and the fruits named are rati and prīti, pleasure and affection.

tatra nāgādhipaḥ padmo dhavaladivya sundaraḥ ।
divyaratna mahākānti phaṇāmaṇḍala bhūṣitaḥ ॥ 5.67 ॥

English

There the serpent lord is Padma, white and divinely beautiful,
adorned with a circle of hoods of great loveliness set with divine gems.

Purport

Padma, 'lotus', is one of the eight great serpent kings, and his brother Mahāpadma will guard the ford after next.

tatra ye mānavā yāvadekaviṁśativāsaram ।
snāna dānāni sarvāṇi kuryuḥ karmmāṇi pūrvavat ॥ 5.68 ॥

English

Those people there who for as many as twenty-one days
perform bathing and all the gifts and rites as before,

Purport

The formula at its shortest.

English

they too do not go to an evil destiny, but are always born in fortunate states;
endowed with delight, affection, mastery, joy and great happiness,

तिनीहरू पनि दुर्गतिमा जाँदैनन्, सधैँ सद्गतिमा जन्मिन्छन्;

Purport

Five words for happiness in a single line. This ford is for people who want to be glad, and the poem lets them want it.

bodhisattvā mahāsattvāḥ pariśuddha trimaṇḍalāḥ ।
bhadraśrī sadguṇādhārā bhaveyurbodhisādhinaḥ ॥ 5.70 ॥

English

Bodhisattvas and great beings, their three spheres wholly pure,
vessels of glory and true virtue, they become accomplishers of awakening.

Purport

Pleasure and purity in consecutive verses, with no sense that one cancels the other.

tataste bodhisaṁbhāraṁ pūrayitvā yathākramam ।
arhantastrividhāṁ bodhiṁ prāpya yāyurjinālayam ॥ 5.71 ॥

English

Then, fulfilling the accumulations for awakening in due order,
as Arhats, attaining the threefold awakening, they go to the abode of the Jina.

Purport

The tenth entry closes. Two remain.

tataśca yatra vāgmatyā cārumatyā samāgame ।
tatsulakṣaṇamākhyātaṁ śrī tejo bhāgyasampadam ॥ 5.72 ॥

English

Then, where the Cārumatī meets the Vāgmatī,
that is declared to be Sulakṣaṇa, giver of glory, splendour and good fortune.

Purport

The eleventh. Cārumatī is also the name of the daughter Aśoka is said in Nepali tradition to have married into the valley, and whose stupa stands at Chabahil. The river and the princess share a name.

tatra nāgo mahāpadmo'ti dhavalo'ti sundaraḥ ।
divyaratna prabhāśrī matphaṇāmaṇḍalamaṇḍitaḥ ॥ 5.73 ॥

English

There the serpent is Mahāpadma, exceedingly white and exceedingly beautiful,
adorned with a circle of hoods glorious with the light of divine gems.

Purport

Mahāpadma, 'great lotus', completes the pair begun at the tenth ford.

tatra ye mānavā yāvadekaviṁśativāsaram ।
snāna dānaṁ japa dhyānaṁ kuryuryajñaṁ ca pūrvavat ॥ 5.74 ॥

English

Those people there who for as many as twenty-one days
perform bathing, giving, recitation, meditation and sacrifice as before,

Purport

The five acts spelled out once more, which the poet does every few entries so the abbreviation never becomes unreadable.

English

they too do not go to an evil destiny, but are always born in fortunate states;
endowed with glory, splendour and enjoyment, beautiful and marked with the auspicious signs,

तिनीहरू पनि दुर्गतिमा जाँदैनन्, सधैँ सद्गतिमा जन्मिन्छन्;

Purport

Sulakṣaṇa means 'of good marks', and the reward matches the name: a body marked with the signs of good fortune.

bodhisattvā mahāsattvā bhadraśrīsadguṇāśrayāḥ ।
sarvasattva hitodyuktā bhaveyurbodhicāriṇaḥ ॥ 5.76 ॥

English

Bodhisattvas and great beings, vessels of glory and true virtue,
devoted to the welfare of all beings, they become walkers of the path to awakening.

Purport

The refrain that closes every entry, arriving now for the eleventh time.

tataste bodhisaṁbhāraṁ pūrayitvā yathākramam ।
arhantastrividhāṁ bodhi prāpyeyuḥ saugataṁ padam ॥ 5.77 ॥

English

Then, fulfilling the accumulations for awakening in due order,
as Arhats, attaining the threefold awakening, they reach the state of the Sugata.

Purport

The eleventh entry closes.

tataśca yatra vāgmatyā prabhāmatyā samāgame ।
jayatīrtha samākhyātaṁ sarvaśatrubhayāntakṛt ॥ 5.78 ॥

English

Then, where the Prabhāvatī meets the Vāgmatī,
that ford is declared to be Jaya, ender of all fear of enemies.

Purport

The twelfth and last, and its gift is victory. For a valley that spent much of its history under three competing kingdoms, a ford that ended the fear of enemies had an obvious clientele.

tatra nāgādhipaḥ śuklaḥ śrīkānti divya sundaraḥ ।
divyaratna prabhāśrī matphaṇāmaṇḍalamaṇḍitaḥ ॥ 5.79 ॥

English

There the serpent lord is bright, of glorious loveliness and divine beauty,
adorned with a circle of hoods glorious with the light of divine gems.

Purport

The last of the twelve serpents, described in the same terms as the first. The poet has not tired of the jewels.

tatra ye mānavā yāvadeka viṁśativāsaram ।
snātvā yajñādi karmmāṇi kuryuḥ sarvāṇi pūrvavat ॥ 5.80 ॥

English

Those people there who for as many as twenty-one days
bathe and perform sacrifice and all the other rites as before,

Purport

The observance for the last time in the list of twelve.

English

they too do not go to an evil destiny, but are always born in fortunate states;
fearless, vigorous in the three qualities, victorious, their enemies overcome,

तिनीहरू पनि दुर्गतिमा जाँदैनन्, सधैँ सद्गतिमा जन्मिन्छन्;

Purport

Fearless is named before victorious, which is the better order. The ford ends the fear first and the enemy second.

bodhisattvā mahāsattvāścaturbrahma vihāriṇaḥ ।
bhadraśrī sadguṇācārā bhaveyurbodhicāriṇaḥ ॥ 5.82 ॥

English

Bodhisattvas and great beings, dwelling in the four Brahmavihāras,
of glorious and virtuous conduct, they become walkers of the path to awakening.

Purport

A ford that grants victory over enemies delivers a person into loving-kindness and compassion. The poem lets that irony stand without comment.

tataste bodhisaṁbhāraṁ pūrayitvā yathākramam ।
arhantastrividhāṁ bodhiprāpyeyuḥ saugatapadam ॥ 5.83 ॥

English

Then, fulfilling the accumulations for awakening in due order,
as Arhats, attaining the threefold awakening, they reach the state of the Sugata.

Purport

The twelfth and last entry closes. Every one of them has ended in the same place.

dvādaśaitāni nāmnātra tīrthāni mahānti himālaye ।
anyānyapi ca saṁtyatra tāni vakṣyāmyahaṁ śṛṇu ॥ 5.84 ॥

English

These twelve by name are the great holy fords here in the Himālaya;
and there are others here as well, which I shall now tell. Listen.

यी बाह्र नामका महातीर्थ यहाँ हिमालयमा छन्;

Purport

The list of twelve is complete and the poet immediately says it is not enough. What follows is a second, looser list of sites that did not fit the pattern.

tadyathopari vāgmatyāḥ śrotasiddhārasaṁnidhau ।
saundarya tīrthamākhyātaṁ saundarya guṇasaṁpadam ॥ 5.85 ॥

English

Thus, higher up the Vāgmatī, near the current of Siddhāra,
there is a ford declared to be Saundarya, giver of beauty and its virtues.

Purport

The second list begins upstream, and the poet is now working his way up the Bagmati towards its source. Saundarya means beauty, and it is the only one of these fords named for what it gives rather than for who visits it.

tatra ye mānavā yāvadekaviṁśativāsaram ।
snāna dānāni karmmāṇi kuryuḥ sarvāṇi pūrvavat ॥ 5.86 ॥

English

Those people there who for as many as twenty-one days
perform bathing, giving and all the other acts as before,

Purport

The same twenty-one days as at the twelve. The observance does not change for a lesser site.

te'pi na durggatiṁ yāyuḥ sadā sadgatisaṁbhavāḥ ।
surūpā lakṣaṇopetāḥ śrīmantaḥ sadguṇānvitāḥ ॥ 5.87 ॥

English

they too do not go to an evil destiny, but are always born in fortunate states;
beautiful, marked with the auspicious signs, glorious and endowed with true virtue,

तिनीहरू पनि दुर्गतिमा जाँदैनन्, सधैँ सद्गतिमा जन्मिन्छन्;

Purport

Beauty as a religious reward. The poem has offered it before, at the eleventh ford and in chapter four for circumambulation.

bodhisattvā mahāsattvā caturbrahma vihāriṇaḥ ।
sarvasattva hitādhānaṁ careyurbodhisaṁvaram ॥ 5.88 ॥

English

Bodhisattvas and great beings, dwelling in the four Brahmavihāras,
holding the welfare of all beings, they keep the vow of awakening.

Purport

The refrain follows a lesser ford exactly as it followed the great ones.

tataste bodhisaṁbhāraṁ pūrayitvā yathākramam ।
arhanta strividhāṁ bodhiṁ saṁprāpyeyurjinālayam ॥ 5.89 ॥

English

Then, fulfilling the accumulations for awakening in due order,
as Arhats, attaining the threefold awakening, they go to the abode of the Jina.

Purport

The entry closes in the usual way.

tadupari ca yattīrthamagastyena maharṣiṇā ।
nityasnānaṁ japa dhyānaṁ kṛtvā yajñaṁ ca sevitam ॥ 5.90 ॥

English

Above that is the ford where the great seer Agastya
kept daily bathing, recitation and meditation, and performed sacrifice.

Purport

Agastya is one of the oldest seers of Indian tradition, the sage who drank the ocean and carried the Vedas south. A ford named for him puts the Bagmati into the company of the most ancient Indian sacred geography.

tenāgastyaṁ mahattīrthaṁ tadākhyātaṁ munīśvaraiḥ ।
tatra ye manujāḥ snāyuste yāyuḥ paramāṁ gatim ॥ 5.91 ॥

English

For that reason the Lords of Sages have declared it the great ford of Agastya.
Those people who bathe there go to the highest destiny.

Purport

A ford takes its holiness from who has used it. This is a different principle from the twelve, whose power came from the meeting of waters.

dāna yajña japādiśca kuryurdhyātvāpi ceśvaram ।
toṣayeyustathā pitṝndadyurdānaṁ yathepsitam ॥ 5.92 ॥

English

and who perform giving, sacrifice, recitation and the rest, meditating on the Lord,
and satisfy the ancestors and give gifts as they wish,

Purport

The same five acts as always. The poem has settled on a single practice and applies it everywhere.

te sarve vimalātmānaśca caturbrahmavihāriṇaḥ ।
bodhisattvā mahāsattvā bhaveyuḥ śrīguṇāśrayāḥ ॥ 5.93 ॥

English

they all, stainless in self and dwelling in the four Brahmavihāras,
become Bodhisattvas and great beings, vessels of glory and virtue.

Purport

The refrain.

tathā te bodhisaṁbhāraṁ pūrayitvā yathākramam ।
arhantastrividhāṁ bodhiṁ prāpya buddhatvamāpnuyuḥ ॥ 5.94 ॥

English

So too, fulfilling the accumulations for awakening in due order,
as Arhats, attaining the threefold awakening, they attain Buddhahood.

Purport

The Agastya entry closes.

tatraivānantanāgena yadāśritaṁ mahāhradam ।
tena taddhradamākhyātamanantatīrthamarthadam ॥ 5.95 ॥

English

In that same place is the great lake inhabited by the serpent Ananta,
and for that reason that lake is called the Ananta ford, giver of every aim.

Purport

Ananta is the endless serpent on whom Viṣṇu sleeps between world-ages, and the first of the eight great serpent kings. He is the only one in this chapter given a lake rather than a confluence, as Karkoṭaka was given Taudaha in chapter three.

tatra ye manujā yāvadekaviṁśati vāsaram ।
snāna dāna japa dhyānaṁ kuryuryajñaṁ ca pūrvavat ॥ 5.96 ॥

English

Those people there who for as many as twenty-one days
perform bathing, giving, recitation, meditation and sacrifice as before,

Purport

The observance, unchanged at a lake as at a river.

te'pi na durgatiṁ yāyuḥ sadā sadgatisambhavāḥ ।
bodhisattvā mahāsattvā bhaveyuḥ śrīguṇāśrayāḥ ॥ 5.97 ॥

English

they too do not go to an evil destiny, but are always born in fortunate states;
they become Bodhisattvas and great beings, vessels of glory and virtue.

तिनीहरू पनि दुर्गतिमा जाँदैनन्, सधैँ सद्गतिमा जन्मिन्छन्;

Purport

The refrain.

tathā te bodhisambhāraṁ pūrayitvā yathākramam ।
arhanto bodhimāsādya sarvajñapadamāpnuyuḥ ॥ 5.98 ॥

English

So too, fulfilling the accumulations for awakening in due order,
as Arhats, attaining awakening, they reach the state of the Omniscient.

Purport

The Ananta entry closes.

tatraiva ca mahattīrthamāryatārāniṣevitam ।
tenedaṁ prathitamāryatārātīrthaṁ subhāgyadam ॥ 5.99 ॥

English

And in that same place there is a great ford frequented by noble Tārā,
and so it is renowned as the ford of Āryatārā, giver of good fortune.

Purport

Tārā is the great saviour goddess of Mahayana Buddhism, born from Avalokiteśvara's tear and invoked above all others by travellers in danger. She is the only Buddhist deity to have a ford in this chapter named for her.

tatrāpi ye narā yāvadekaviṁśativāsaram ।
snānadānajapa dhyānaṁ yajñaṁ kuryuryathāvidhi ॥ 5.100 ॥

English

There too, those people who for as many as twenty-one days
perform bathing, giving, recitation, meditation and sacrifice according to the rule,

Purport

Sacrifice offered at a ford named for a Buddhist goddess. The chapter has stopped distinguishing between the two vocabularies altogether.

English

they too do not go to an evil destiny, but are born always in fortunate states;
Bodhisattvas and great beings, their three spheres wholly pure,

तिनीहरू पनि दुर्गतिमा जाँदैनन्, सधैँ सद्गतिमा जन्मिन्छन्;

Purport

The refrain.

saubhāgyaśālino dhīrā bhadraśrīsadguṇāśrayāḥ ।
sarvasattvahitotsāhā bhaveyurbodhicāriṇaḥ ॥ 5.102 ॥

English

rich in good fortune, steadfast, vessels of glory and true virtue,
eager for the welfare of all beings, they become walkers of the path to awakening.

Purport

Good fortune is Tārā's particular gift, and the poem keeps the correspondence between the goddess and the reward.

tathā te bodhisaṁbhāraṁ pūrayitvā yathākramam ।
arhanta strividhāṁ bodhiṁ prāpyeyuḥ saugataṁ padam ॥ 5.103 ॥

English

So too, fulfilling the accumulations for awakening in due order,
as Arhats, attaining the threefold awakening, they reach the state of the Sugata.

Purport

The Tārā entry closes, and the chapter's most important site comes next.

athorddhvañca vāgmatyāḥ prabhavatīrthamuttamam ।
sarveṣāmapi tīrthānāṁ pradhānamagramucyate ॥ 5.104 ॥

English

And higher still, at the head of the Vāgmatī, is the excellent ford of Prabhava,
which is called the chief and foremost of all the fords.

Purport

Prabhava means 'source'. This is Bagdwar, high on Shivapuri, where the Bagmati is said to issue from the rock. Chapter four described the water coming from Vajrasattva's thumb at this spot, and the poem now ranks it above every other ford in the valley.

tatraikasnāna mātreṇa gaṁgā snāna śatādhikam ।
puṇyaṁ mahattaraṁ siddhaṁ vāñchitārtha sukhapradam ॥ 5.105 ॥

English

By a single bath there one gains merit more than a hundred baths in the Gaṅgā,
exceedingly great and accomplished, giving the happiness of every desired aim.

Purport

Chapter four said the Bagmati equals the Ganges. This verse goes further and says one bath at its source is worth a hundred in the Ganges. It is the largest claim the poem makes for any water.

tatra ye mānavā yāvadekaviṁśativāsaram ।
snāna dāna japa dhyānaṁ yajñaṁ kuryuryathāvidhiḥ ॥ 5.106 ॥

English

Those people there who for as many as twenty-one days
perform bathing, giving, recitation, meditation and sacrifice according to the rule,

Purport

The same twenty-one days at the greatest ford of all. The poem never asks for more.

suviśuddhatrikāyāste yathākāma sukhāśinaśca ।
dharmmārthaśrīsamṛddhāḥ syuścaturbrahmavihāriṇaḥ ॥ 5.107 ॥

English

their three bodies made wholly pure, enjoying happiness at will,
rich in Dharma, wealth and glory, they dwell in the four Brahmavihāras.

Purport

Purity and enjoyment in the same verse once more. Five chapters in, this is simply how the poem thinks.

kvacinna durggatiṁ yāyuḥ saṁjātāḥ sadgatau sadā ।
svaparātmahitaṁ kṛtvā saṁcareyuḥ sadā śubhe ॥ 5.108 ॥

English

Nowhere do they go to an evil destiny, but are born always in fortunate states;
doing good to themselves and others, they move always in what is good.

तिनीहरू कतै दुर्गतिमा जाँदैनन्, सधैँ सद्गतिमा जन्मिन्छन्;

Purport

'To themselves and others' is a small and honest phrase. The poem does not ask anyone to leave themselves out.

tataste vimalātmānaḥ suviśuddhendriyāśayāḥ ।
bodhisattvā mahāsattvā bhaveyuḥ sadguṇākarāḥ ॥ 5.109 ॥

English

Then, stainless in self, wholly pure in faculties and intention,
they become Bodhisattvas and great beings, mines of true virtue.

Purport

A mine of virtue, which is the same image as King Dharmākara's name in chapter four.

tathā te bodhisaṁbhāraṁ pūrayitvā yathākramam ।
arhantastrividhāṁ bodhi prāpyeyuḥ saugataṁ padam ॥ 5.110 ॥

English

So too, fulfilling the accumulations for awakening according to the rule,
as Arhats, attaining the threefold awakening, they reach the state of the Sugata.

Purport

The Prabhava entry closes.

sa śaṁkhaparvato nāma sarva śiloccayottamam ।
samārohaṇa mātreṇa niṣṇātaḥ siddhimān bhavet ॥ 5.111 ॥

English

That mountain named Śaṅkha is the foremost of all the hills;
by merely climbing it, one who is skilled becomes accomplished.

शंख नामको त्यो पर्वत सबै शिलोच्चयमध्ये उत्तम छ;

Purport

Shivapuri, where the river rises. Merely climbing it is enough, which makes this the easiest observance in the chapter and one that thousands of people in Kathmandu still perform.

tatrāpi ye samāśritya snātvā dhyātvā samāhitāḥ ।
japa yajñādi dānaṁ ca kuryuḥ saṁbodhimānasāḥ ॥ 5.112 ॥

English

There too, those who resorting to it bathe and meditate with settled minds,
and perform recitation, sacrifice and giving, with minds set on awakening,

Purport

The full observance is still available to those who want it, even where the climb alone would do.

te'pi na durgatiṁ yāyuḥ sadāsadgati saṁbhavāḥ ।
bodhisattvā mahāsattvāḥ pariśuddha trimaṇḍalāḥ ॥ 5.113 ॥

English

they too do not go to an evil destiny, but are always born in fortunate states;
Bodhisattvas and great beings, their three spheres wholly pure,

तिनीहरू पनि दुर्गतिमा जाँदैनन्, सधैँ सद्गतिमा जन्मिन्छन्;

Purport

The refrain.

niḥkleśā vimalātmānaḥ sarva sattva hitāśayāḥ ।
bhadraśrī sadguṇādhārā bhaveyu rbrahmacāriṇaḥ ॥ 5.114 ॥

English

free of defilement, stainless in self, intent on the welfare of all beings,
vessels of glory and true virtue, they become celibate practitioners.

Purport

The mountain entry follows the same shape as the river ones.

tataste bodhisaṁbhāraṁ pūrayitvā yathākramam ।
arhanto bodhimāsādya saṁbuddhapadamāpnuyuḥ ॥ 5.115 ॥

English

Then, fulfilling the accumulations for awakening in due order,
as Arhats, attaining awakening, they reach the state of a Perfect Buddha.

Purport

The last named site closes, and what follows is the poem's admission that it has not covered everything.

bahūni copa tīrthāni vidyante'tra himālaye ।
tāni tīrthāni sarvāṇi bhukti mukti pradānyapi ॥ 5.116 ॥

English

And many lesser fords exist here in the Himālaya,
and all those fords give both enjoyment and liberation.

Purport

Bhukti and mukti, enjoyment and release, named together as the two things water gives. The pairing is a commonplace of Indian devotional literature and it sums up this whole chapter.

yatra yatra sravantīnāmanyeṣāṁ ca samāgame ।
tatra tatrāpi tīrthāni puṇyaphalapradāni hi ॥ 5.117 ॥

English

Wherever streams meet with other streams,
there too are fords that give the fruit of merit.

Purport

This is the general rule behind the whole chapter, and the poet states it only now, after eighteen worked examples. Any confluence is a ford. The valley has hundreds.

teṣāṁ cāpyupa tīrthānāṁ pṛthakpṛthakphalaṁ mahat ।
pāpa saṁśodhanaṁ puṇyaṁ saddharmmasukhasādhanam ॥ 5.118 ॥

English

And of those lesser fords too the fruit is great, each in its own way,
purifying sin, and merit that accomplishes the happiness of the true Dharma.

Purport

Each has its own particular gift, which the poem declines to enumerate. It has made its point about how these places work.

teṣvapi ye narāḥ snātvā careyuḥ poṣadhaṁ vratam ।
dadyurdānāni cārthibhyaḥ kuryuryajñāni ca ye mudā ॥ 5.119 ॥

English

Those people who bathe in them too and keep the fasting vow,
and give gifts to those who ask and joyfully perform sacrifices,

Purport

The same observance at the smallest stream junction as at Bagdwar. The poem has been consistent about this from the first entry.

pitṝnsaṁtarpyayeyuśca pūjayeyuḥ surānapi ।
smṛtvā dhyātvā triratnānāṁ bhajeyurnāmajalpanaiḥ ॥ 5.120 ॥

English

and satisfy the ancestors and worship the gods as well,
and remembering and meditating on the Three Jewels, worship them with recitation,

Purport

Ancestors, gods and the Three Jewels in two lines, in that order, as a single continuous act of devotion.

evaṁ lokādhipānāṁ ca smṛtvā dhyātvā samāhitāḥ ।
japitvā nāma mantrāṇi sādhayeyu ryathāvidhiḥ ॥ 5.121 ॥

English

and likewise, remembering and meditating on the guardians of the worlds with settled minds,
and reciting their names and mantras, accomplish their rites according to the rule,

Purport

The guardians of the directions added to the list. By the end of this chapter almost every category of being in the poem has been given something to be worshipped with.

tāni sarvāṇi sidhyeyuḥ sādhitāni jagaddhite ।
dadyuśceha śubhotsāhaṁ paratra nirvṛtaṁ padam ॥ 5.122 ॥

English

all these, when accomplished for the welfare of the world, succeed,
and give auspicious vigour here and the state of peace hereafter.

Purport

The condition attached at the last moment is the important one. These rites succeed when they are performed for the welfare of the world. The poem has quietly put a limit on what they can be used for.

te'pi na durgatiṁ yāyuḥ sadā sadgatisaṁbhavāḥ ।
niḥkleśā vimalātmānaḥ pariśuddhā trimaṇḍalāḥ ॥ 5.123 ॥

English

They too do not go to an evil destiny, but are always born in fortunate states;
free of defilement, stainless in self, their three spheres wholly pure,

तिनीहरू पनि दुर्गतिमा जाँदैनन्, सधैँ सद्गतिमा जन्मिन्छन्;

Purport

The refrain, extended now to the smallest sites in the valley.

bodhisattvā mahāsattvāścaturbrahma vihāriṇaḥ ।
bhadraśrī sadguṇādhārā bhaveyuḥ bodhicāriṇaḥ ॥ 5.124 ॥

English

Bodhisattvas and great beings, dwelling in the four Brahmavihāras,
vessels of glory and true virtue, they become walkers of the path to awakening.

Purport

Whatever the site, the destination is the same.

tataste bodhisambhāraṁ pūrayitvā yathākramam ।
arhanto bodhiṁ prāpya yāyurjinālayam ॥ 5.125 ॥

English

Then, fulfilling the accumulations for awakening in due order,
as Arhats, attaining awakening, they go to the abode of the Jina.

Purport

The last of the entries closes, and the chapter turns to its summary.

ekaṁ vijñāya sarveṣāṁ tīrthānāmapi satphalam ।
bhadraśrī sadguṇotsāhaṁ saukhyasaṁbodhi sādhanam ॥ 5.126 ॥

English

Knowing that the true fruit of all the fords is one,
glory and virtue and vigour, and the accomplishing of happiness and awakening,

Purport

After eighteen fords with eighteen different gifts, the poem says the real fruit of all of them is one and the same. The variety was for the reader's sake.

sarveṣveteṣu tīrtheṣu bhadraśrīguṇavāñchābhiḥ ।
snāna dānādikaṁ karma karttavyaṁ bodhi prāptaye ॥ 5.127 ॥

English

at all of these fords, by those who long for glory and virtue,
bathing, giving and the other acts should be done, for the attaining of awakening.

Purport

The instruction that follows from the whole chapter, stated in a single sentence.

ye ye eteṣu tīrtheṣu snātvā nityaṁ yathāvidhiḥ ।
datvā dāna vrataṁ dhṛtvā dhyātvā bhajeyurīśvaram ॥ 5.128 ॥

English

Whoever bathes daily at these fords according to the rule,
and giving gifts and keeping the vow, meditating, worships the Lord,

Purport

Daily rather than for twenty-one days. The poem has moved from an observance to a way of living.

te te sarve vikalmāṣāḥ pariśuddha trimaṇḍalāḥ ।
niḥkleśā vimalātmāno bhaveyurbodhibhāginaḥ ॥ 5.129 ॥

English

all of them, free of stain, their three spheres wholly pure,
free of defilement and stainless in self, become partakers of awakening.

Purport

The summary's own refrain.

iti lokādhipaiḥ sarvairbrahmendra pramukhairapi ।
sarvāṇyetāni tīrthāni saṁsevitāni sarvadā ॥ 5.130 ॥

English

Thus by all the guardians of the worlds, with Brahmā and Indra foremost,
all these fords are served always.

Purport

The catalogue of beings begins, as it does at the end of every chapter of this poem. Five verses of it, listing everyone who uses the valley's water.

tathā ca munibhiḥ sarvaistāpasairbrahmacāribhiḥ ।

English

So too by all the sages, by ascetics and celibate practitioners,
by renunciates and yogins, by tīrthikas and disciples,

Purport

Followers of other paths named among the regular users, for the fifth chapter running.

Purport

The list rises into the sky, as the catalogues in this poem always do.

Purport

The catalogue ends at the top, with the Buddhas. And then the Buddha speaking places himself in it.

Purport

Swayambhu returns in the last movement of the chapter. However far the poem travels among the valley's rivers, it comes back to the hill.

Purport

Swiftly, which is the word the poem attaches to everything done on this ground.

The chapter closes as the other four did, with an assembly gladdened. Between the first verse and this one the poem has walked the whole water system of the Kathmandu Valley, from the confluences in the city up to the spring on the mountain, and given every meeting of two streams a name, a guardian and a gift.
