Swayambhu Purana

Chapter Seven: The Concealment of Dharmadhātu Vāgīśvara

198 verses, complete. Sanskrit, transliteration, English, Nepali, and a purport.

This is the seventh chapter of the Swayambhu Purana, and it answers the question chapter one left hanging: who covered the self arisen light with a stone, and why. In the age of Kāśyapa Buddha, a king of Bengal named Pracaṇḍadeva gives away his kingdom, fails to find any purpose in solitary asceticism, and walks the length of India teaching instead. He reaches the Kathmandu Valley, is ordained there as the monk Śāntaśrī, and sits in front of the uncovered light until it occurs to him that in a greedy age somebody will pull it down for its jewels. What he does about that is what stands on the hill today, along with the five shrines he set into it.

Every verse is given in five layers: the Sanskrit, a Roman transliteration you can read aloud, a literal English translation, a Nepali translation, and a purport that explains what is happening and why it matters. Use the buttons below to show only the layers you want. For the narrative alone, keep the purport and turn the rest off. Your choice is remembered as you move between chapters.

atha bhūyaḥ sa maitreyo bodhisattvo mahāmatiḥ ।
bhagavantaṁ tamānamya sāñjalirevamavravīt ॥ 7.1 ॥

English

Then again that Maitreya, the Bodhisattva of great intellect,
bowing to the Blessed One, spoke thus with folded hands:

Purport

The seventh chapter opens with Maitreya rising again on the Swayambhu hill. Six chapters have described how the shrine came to be. He now asks about the one thing that has never been explained.

bhagavañchilayācchādya dharmmadhātumimaṁ kadā ।
kenaiva hetunā stūpaṁ ko vyadhādiṣṭakāmayam ॥ 7.2 ॥

English

Blessed One, when was this Dharmadhātu covered over with a stone,
and for what reason, and who built the stupa of brick?

Purport

This is the question chapter one raised and left hanging. Verse 1.67 said only that somebody covered the light with a stone and raised a brick stupa over it, without naming who or why. Two hundred verses of this chapter exist to answer that sentence.

bhagavantatsamālokya sarvvāllokānsakautukān ।
etaddhetu samādiśya vinodayitumarhati ॥ 7.3 ॥

English

Blessed One, seeing all these people here filled with curiosity,
may you teach the reason for it and satisfy them.

Purport

He asks on the assembly's behalf, as he has in every chapter. The word for what he wants done to them means to delight rather than merely to inform.

iti saṁprārthitaṁ tena maitreyeṇa munīśvaraḥ ।
bhagavānstaṁ mahāsattvaṁ sampaśyannevamādiśat ॥ 7.4 ॥

English

Thus entreated by Maitreya, that Lord of Sages,
the Blessed One, looking upon that great being, instructed thus:

Purport

Request, gaze, answer, for the seventh chapter running.

śṛṇu maitreya yenāyaṁ guptikṛtaḥ prakāśane ।
etaddhetuṁ samākhyāsye sarvalokābhibodhane ॥ 7.5 ॥

English

Listen, Maitreya, to why this was concealed from open view;
I shall relate the reason for it, for the awakening of all the worlds.

सुन, हे मैत्रेय, यो किन प्रकाशबाट गुप्त गरियो;

Purport

Gupti, concealment, is the word the chapter is named for. The Buddha frames the whole story as an act of hiding something, and the reason for hiding it will turn out to be entirely practical.

tadyathā nirvṛtiṁ yāte saṁbuddhe kanakamunau ।
viṁśati varṣa sāhasra nṛṇāmāyuryadā bhavet ॥ 7.6 ॥

English

Thus: when the Perfect Buddha Kanakamuni had passed into final peace,
when the lifespan of human beings was twenty thousand years,

Purport

The count reaches its lowest yet: eighty, seventy, sixty, forty, thirty, and now twenty thousand years. Each chapter has moved one Buddha closer to our own age.

tadābhūdbhagavāñchāstā dharmmarājo munīśvaraḥ ।
sarvajño'rhanmahābhijñaḥ kāśyapākhyastathāgataḥ ॥ 7.7 ॥

English

there arose a Blessed Teacher, a Dharma-king and Lord of Sages,
the Omniscient Arhat of great knowledge, the Tathāgata called Kāśyapa.

Purport

Kāśyapa is the sixth of the seven Buddhas of the past, and the last before Śākyamuni himself. There is only one left after him, which means this chapter is the closest the poem comes to its own present.

sa saṁbuddho mahāpuryā vārāṇasyāmupāśrame ।
mṛgadāve jināvāse vijahāra sasāṁdhikaḥ ॥ 7.8 ॥

English

That Perfect Buddha, in a hermitage near the great city of Vārāṇasī,
in the Deer Park, an abode of the Jina, dwelt with his companions.

Purport

The Deer Park at Sarnath, outside Varanasi, where Śākyamuni would later give his first sermon. Of all the cities named for the past Buddhas in this poem, this is the one a reader could actually visit, and still can.

tadā bodhisattvo'haṁ jyotirājābhidhaḥ kila ।
kāśyapasya jagacchāstuḥ śaraṇastha upāsakaḥ ॥ 7.9 ॥

English

At that time I was a Bodhisattva named Jyotirāja, it is said,
a lay follower who had taken refuge in Kāśyapa, teacher of the world.

Purport

The sixth of the Buddha's past selves: Satyadharma, Kṣemaṁkara, Parvata, Jyotipāla, Sudharma, and now Jyotirāja, 'king of light'. He is a layman here rather than a monk.

yadā sa kāśyapaḥ śāstā sarvatraidhātukādhipaḥ ।
saddharmmaṁ samupādeṣṭuṁ sabhāsane samāśrayet ॥ 7.10 ॥

English

When that teacher Kāśyapa, lord of the whole threefold realm,
took his seat in the assembly to teach the true Dharma,

Purport

The teaching scene is set for the seventh time, and the catalogue that follows runs for sixteen verses.

tatsaddharmmāmṛtaṁ pātuṁ sarve lokāḥ samāgatāḥ ।
brahmaśakrādayo devāḥ sarve lokādhipā api ॥ 7.11 ॥

English

all the people came to drink the nectar of that true Dharma:
Brahmā, Śakra and the other gods, and all the guardians of the worlds,

Purport

The nectar image opens the list, as it has in every assembly in all seven chapters.

grahāstārāgaṇāścāpi vidyādharāścasāpsarāḥ ।
siddhāḥ sādhyāśca rudrāśca yakṣa guhyaka kinnarāḥ ॥ 7.12 ॥

English

the planets and the hosts of stars, the Vidyādharas with the Apsarases,
Siddhas, Sādhyas and Rudras, Yakṣas, Guhyakas and Kinnaras,

Purport

The same ranks in the same order the poem has used since chapter one.

kumbhāṇḍā rākṣasāścāpi nāgāśca garuḍā api ।
ṛṣayastāpasāścāpi tīrthikā brahmacāriṇaḥ ॥ 7.13 ॥

English

Kumbhāṇḍas and Rākṣasas, Nāgas and Garuḍas too,
seers and ascetics, tīrthikas and celibate practitioners,

Purport

Nāgas and garuḍas in the same line for the seventh time, and once again nothing happens between them.

yatayo yoginaścāpi tathānyecāpyupāsakāḥ ।
brāhmaṇāḥ kṣatriyāścāpi rājāno'pi mahībhṛtaḥ ॥ 7.14 ॥

English

renunciates and yogins, and other lay devotees as well,
brahmins and Kṣatriyas, and kings, rulers of the earth,

Purport

The list moves out of the religious orders and into the social world.

vaiśyāśca mantriṇo'mātyā bhṛtyāḥ sainyādhipā gaṇā api ।
śilpino vaṇijaścāpi sārthavāhā mahājanāḥ ॥ 7.15 ॥

English

Vaiśyas, ministers and counsellors, servants and commanders of armies with their troops,
craftsmen and merchants, caravan leaders and men of substance,

Purport

The trading classes again. Varanasi was one of the great commercial cities of India, and the poet gives its merchants their place.

paurā jānapadā grāmyānaigamāḥ pārvatā api ।
tathānyadeśikā lokā api sarvve samāgatāḥ ॥ 7.16 ॥

English

townspeople, country people, villagers, guild members and hill dwellers,
and people from other lands too, all of them came.

Purport

Naigamas are members of a merchant guild, and the pārvatas are hill people. The poem keeps widening its catalogue slightly with each chapter.

tatra sabhāsanāsīnaṁ saṁbuddhaṁ taṁ munīśvaram ।
bhagavantaṁ samālokya sarve saṁghāḥ samāyayuḥ ॥ 7.17 ॥

English

Beholding that Lord of Sages, the Perfect Buddha, seated on the assembly seat,
seeing the Blessed One, all his communities came.

Purport

The monastic communities arrive after the crowd, which is the order this poem always uses.

bhikṣavaḥ śrāvakāḥ sarve yatayo yogino'pi ।
cailakāvratinaścāpi sarve upāsakā api ॥ 7.18 ॥

English

monks and disciples, renunciates and yogins,
cailakas and keepers of vows, and all the lay devotees too,

Purport

Cailakas are ascetics who wear a single strip of cloth. They have appeared in every assembly since chapter three.

bhikṣuṇyo'pi tathā sarvāścailikā vratinyaḥ ।
śrāvikāścāpi tathānyāḥ samupāgatāḥ ॥ 7.19 ॥

English

nuns too, and all the cailikās and women keeping vows,
and laywomen, and other women as well, came.

Purport

Four categories of women in a single verse, and then 'other women as well'. The poem has been consistent about this in all seven chapters.

bodhisattvā mahāsattvā ṛṣayo brahmacāriṇaḥ ।
tīrthikā vaiṣṇavāḥ śaivā nirgranthāśca tapasvinaḥ ॥ 7.20 ॥

English

Bodhisattvas and great beings, seers and celibate practitioners,
tīrthikas, Vaiṣṇavas and Śaivas, Nirgranthas and ascetics,

Purport

Vaiṣṇavas, Śaivas and Jains named together in one line at a Buddha's sermon, as they were in chapter four.

tathānye'pi samāyātāḥ saddharmaguṇalālasāḥ ।
sarve'pi te munīndraṁ taṁ dṛṣṭvā yayuḥ pramoditāḥ ॥ 7.21 ॥

English

and others too came, longing for the virtues of the true Dharma;
all of them, seeing that Lord of Sages, went to him rejoicing.

र अन्य पनि आए, सद्धर्मका गुणका अभिलाषी;

Purport

The catalogue closes with a catch-all, as it does in every chapter.

tatra sarve'pi te lokāstaṁ munīndraṁ yathākramam ।
abhyarcya vidhinā natvā tatsabhāyāmupāśrayan ॥ 7.22 ॥

English

There all those people, worshipping that Lord of Sages in due order
and bowing according to the rule, took their places in that assembly.

Purport

'According to the rule' again. Even the seating in this poem is prescribed.

tatra sarve'pi te lokāḥ parivṛtya samantataḥ ।
puraskṛtya munīndrantaṁ saṁpaśyantaḥ samāhitāḥ ॥ 7.23 ॥

English

There all those people, spreading out on every side
and keeping that Lord of Sages before them, gazed at him with settled minds,

Purport

The concentric arrangement, described in the same words in every chapter.

tatsaddharmmāmṛtaṁ pātuṁ tṛṣārttā iva sāgaram ।
sāñjalayaḥ prasannāsyāḥ samātasthuryathākramam ॥ 7.24 ॥

English

to drink the nectar of that true Dharma, like men parched with thirst before the sea,
with folded hands and serene faces they stood in due order.

Purport

A rare simile, and a good one. Thirsty men standing at the edge of an ocean: more water than they could ever drink, and all of it there for them.

tā~llokānsamupāsīnānsarvānsaṁghānsurānapi ।
sarvāllokādhipāṁścāpi dṛṣṭvā sa bhagavāñjinaḥ ॥ 7.25 ॥

English

Seeing all those people seated, and all the communities and the gods,
and all the guardians of the worlds, that Blessed Jina

Purport

The look over the assembly that precedes every teaching in this poem.

āryasatyaṁ samārabhya saṁbodhi jñānasādhanam ।
ādi madhyānta kalyāṇaṁ saddharmma samupādiśat ॥ 7.26 ॥

English

took up the noble truths, the means to the knowledge of awakening,
and taught the true Dharma, excellent in beginning, middle and end.

Purport

The four noble truths again, as in chapters four and six. The poem gives its sermons a content only when the chapter concerns a beginning.

tatsaddharmmāmṛtaṁ pītvā sarve lokāḥ prabodhitāḥ ।
sadā bhadrasukhaṁ prāptuṁ samīcchire susaṁvaram ॥ 7.27 ॥

English

Drinking that nectar of the true Dharma, all the people were awakened,
and longed for the excellent vow, to gain lasting good and happiness.

Purport

The sermon produces a wish, as it always does. Nobody in this poem is ever argued into anything.

tataḥ sarve'pi te lokāḥ saṁbuddha guṇavāñchinaḥ ।
bodhicaryā vrataṁ dhṛtvā saṁcarire sadā śubhe ॥ 7.28 ॥

English

Then all those people, longing for the qualities of a Perfect Buddha,
took up the vow of Bodhi-conduct and moved always in what is good.

Purport

The frame at Varanasi is now complete. The poem leaves it and does not come back until the very last verses.

tadā sarvāṇi kāryāṇi kṛtvā vajrī sa yogavit ।
mañjudevaḥ sa bhāryānte svayaṁ nirvṛtimāyayau ॥ 7.29 ॥

English

Then, having done all that was to be done, that master of yoga, the holder of the vajra,
Mañjudeva, passed at last into final peace together with his consorts.

Purport

Mañjudeva dies. He drained the lake in chapter three, taught Dharmaśrīmitra in chapter six, and has been living on his hill ever since. The poem lets him go in half a line, and the next verse quietly takes it back.

tato gatvā mahācīne sa mañjuśrī jināśrame ।
svadivyavapurādhāya tasthau bhāryā samanvitaḥ ॥ 7.30 ॥

English

Then, going to Mahācīna, to the hermitage of the Jina, Mañjuśrī,
taking again his own divine body, remained there with his consorts.

Purport

What died was the human form. Mañjuśrī simply resumes his own body and goes home to the five-peaked mountain. The chapter is careful to distinguish the death of Mañjudeva from the end of Mañjuśrī.

atra teṣāṁ śarīrāṇi śiṣyāḥ sarve'pi pāvake ।
saṁskṛtya vidhināsthīni gṛhītvā samaśodhayan ॥ 7.31 ॥

English

Here their bodies were consecrated in fire by all their disciples
according to the rule, and taking up the bones, they washed them clean.

Purport

A cremation described in its ordinary detail: the fire, the collecting of the bones, the washing. Whatever Mañjuśrī did, his disciples had a funeral to hold.

tataste'tra tadasthīni garbhe sthāpya yathāvidhi ।
caityaṁ kṛtvā pratiṣṭhāpya samabhyarcya sadābhajan ॥ 7.32 ॥

English

Then, placing those bones here in a relic chamber according to the rule,
they made a caitya, consecrated it, worshipped it and honoured it always.

Purport

This is the Mañjuśrī caitya, the stupa on the hill north west of Swayambhu that still bears his name. Chapter three said the hill was called Mañjuśrī's ground because he lived there. Here we learn that his ashes are in it.

ye cedaṁ caityamabhyarcya bhajanti śraddhayā sadā ।
te tasya mañjudevasya saddharmmaguṇamāpnuyuḥ ॥ 7.33 ॥

English

Those who worship this caitya and honour it always with faith
shall attain the virtue of the true Dharma that belonged to that Mañjudeva.

Purport

What the shrine transmits is the man's own quality. This is a different kind of promise from the ones the poem usually makes.

matvaivaṁ yebhivāñchanti mañjuśrī dharmmasadguṇam ।
atra mañjuśrī yaścaitya sarvadā prabhajantu te ॥ 7.34 ॥

English

Knowing this, those who desire the Dharma and the virtue of Mañjuśrī,
let them worship the caitya of Mañjuśrī here always.

Purport

A short instruction attached to a single shrine, of the kind chapter four gave for the eight Vītarāgas.

ityādiṣṭaṁ munīndreṇa niśamya te sabhājanāḥ ।
sarve tatheti śrutvā pratyanandan prabodhitāḥ ॥ 7.35 ॥

English

Hearing this instruction of the Lord of Sages, those gathered in the assembly,
all saying so be it, rejoiced and were awakened.

Purport

A small closing formula in the middle of the chapter. The Buddha has finished one story and is about to begin the main one.

athāsau bhagavān bhūyaḥ śākyasiṁho munīśvaraḥ ।
maitreyaṁ taṁ sabhāṁ cāpi samālokyaivamādiśat ॥ 7.36 ॥

English

Then the Blessed One again, Śākyasiṁha, Lord of Sages,
looking upon Maitreya and upon the assembly, instructed thus:

Purport

Śākyasiṁha, the Lion of the Śākyas, is one of the Buddha's oldest titles. The poem uses it here as it is about to tell its most human story.

tataściraṁ gate kāle gauḍarāṣṭre narādhipaḥ ।
abhūtpracaṇḍa devākhyaḥ śrīmān vajradharāṁśajaḥ ॥ 7.37 ॥

English

Then, after a long time had passed, in the realm of Gauḍa there was a king
named Pracaṇḍadeva, a glorious man born of the line of Vajradhara.

Purport

Gauḍa is Bengal. Pracaṇḍadeva, 'fierce god', is the central figure of this chapter and one of the most important names in Nepali Buddhist tradition, since he is the man who will become Śāntaśrī and cover the shrine.

sa rājā suciraṁ rājyaṁ nītidharmmeṇa pālayan ।
sarvāllokāñchubhe dharme niyujya samacārayat ॥ 7.38 ॥

English

That king ruled his kingdom long, protecting it by the policy of Dharma,
and setting all the people in the good Dharma, made them walk in it.

Purport

The same formula of good kingship the poem used for Dharmākara in chapter four: protect, and set people walking.

etaddharmmānubhāvena sadā tatra samantataḥ ।
subhikṣaṁ maṁgalotsāhaṁ nirutpātaṁ pravartata ॥ 7.39 ॥

English

By the power of that Dharma, there on every side always
there was abundance of food, festivity and freedom from calamity.

Purport

Enough to eat, festivals, and no disasters. The three things the poem has promised the Kathmandu Valley since chapter one, here granted to Bengal.

tadā sarve'pi te lokāḥ saddharmaguṇalālasāḥ ।
kuladharma samācārā dānaśīlavratāratāḥ ॥ 7.40 ॥

English

Then all those people, longing for the virtues of the true Dharma,
followed the customs of their families and delighted in giving, conduct and vows.

Purport

'The customs of their families.' The poem does not ask anyone to abandon what they inherited, only to add giving and restraint to it.

satyasandhā nikādhīrāścaturbrahmavihāriṇaḥ ।
kuleśabhajanaṁ kṛtvā prācaranta mitho hite ॥ 7.41 ॥

English

True to their word, steadfast, dwelling in the four Brahmavihāras,
they worshipped their household deities and worked for one another's good.

Purport

Kuleśa is the family deity, the god of one's own lineage. A Buddha describes people worshipping theirs with approval, which is exactly the syncretism of chapters four and five.

dṛṣṭvā sa nṛpatirrājā sarvāllokāñchubhārthinaḥ ।
muditastānsamāmantrya sampaśyannevamādiśat ॥ 7.42 ॥

English

Seeing all his people intent on what is good, that king, lord of men,
delighted, summoned them, and looking upon them instructed thus:

Purport

A king preaching to his own subjects, which is unusual in this poem. Usually it is the king who is instructed.

bho lokāḥ paurikāḥ sarve saddharma yadi vāñchatha ।
triratna bhajanaṁ kṛtvā carata bodhisamvaram ॥ 7.43 ॥

English

Good people, all you citizens, if you desire the true Dharma,
worship the Three Jewels and practise the vow of awakening.

Purport

The instruction is conditional, as every instruction in this poem is. If you want this, do this.

tena yūyaṁ śubhātmānaḥ pariśuddhatrimaṇḍalāḥ ।
bodhisattvā mahāsattvā bhavata bodhicāriṇaḥ ॥ 7.44 ॥

English

By that you become pure in self, your three spheres wholly purified,
Bodhisattvas and great beings, walkers of the path to awakening.

Purport

The promise a Buddha usually makes, made here by a king to his own people.

tataste nirmalātmāno niḥkleśā vimalendriyāḥ ।
arhanto bodhimāsādya sambuddhapadamāpsyatha ॥ 7.45 ॥

English

Then, stainless in self, free of defilement, clear in your faculties,
as Arhats, attaining awakening, you shall reach the state of a Perfect Buddha.

Purport

The destination named in the same words at the close of every teaching in all seven chapters.

ityādiṣṭaṁ narendreṇa sarve lokā niśamya te ।
tatheti prativijñapya prābhyanandan prabodhitāḥ ॥ 7.46 ॥

English

Hearing this instruction of the king, all the people,
understanding and saying so be it, rejoiced and were awakened.

Purport

The formula used for a Buddha's audience, used here for a king's.

tataḥ sarve'pi te lokā dhṛtvā rājñānuśāsanam ।
triratnabhajanaṁ kṛtvā prācaranta śubhācarim ॥ 7.47 ॥

English

Then all those people, holding the king's instruction,
worshipped the Three Jewels and walked in good conduct.

Purport

The reign is a success. Everything that follows happens because the king looks at that success and is not satisfied.

dṛṣṭvā tānsakalāllokān bodhicaryā vratāratān ।
mahānanda prasannātmā punareva vyacintayan ॥ 7.48 ॥

English

Seeing all those people delighting in the vow of Bodhi-conduct,
his heart serene with great joy, he reflected again:

Purport

He begins to think, and the next forty verses are among the most inward in the poem.

saphalaṁ jīvitaṁ janma mama ye śāsanāratāḥ ।
sarve lokāḥ samādhāya pracaranti sadā śubhe ॥ 7.49 ॥

English

My life and birth have borne fruit, since those who keep to my rule,
all these people, with settled minds, walk always in what is good.

Purport

He judges his own life a success, and by the right measure: not what he built, but how his people live.

atha pracaṇḍadevo'sau dṛṣṭvā rājyaṁ mahotsavam ।
saṁsāre'nartha saṁdṛṣṭvā cintayāmāsa sātmavat ॥ 7.50 ॥

English

Then that Pracaṇḍadeva, seeing his kingdom and its great festivals,
and seeing the futility in this round of existence, reflected within himself:

Purport

He looks at the same scene twice in three verses and sees two different things: a life well spent, and a round of existence that comes to nothing. Both readings are true, and the poem lets them sit side by side.

atrāhaṁ jarasākrānto vṛddhaḥ syāṁ jīrṇitendriyaḥ ।
tathā rogābhibhūto'pi vrajeyaṁ maraṇaṁ dhruvam ॥ 7.51 ॥

English

Here I shall be overtaken by old age, shall grow old, my senses worn out,
and overcome by disease I shall surely go to my death.

Purport

Old age, sickness, death. These are the three sights that sent the young Śākyamuni out of his father's palace, and the poem gives them here to a king who has already reigned long and well.

tadatraiva kiyatkālaṁ tiṣṭheyaṁ sansukhānvitaḥ ।
avaśyaṁ bhāvino bhāvā bhavanti bhavacāriṇām ॥ 7.52 ॥

English

How long, then, shall I remain here in comfort?
What must come to be, comes to be for those who wander in existence.

Purport

A plain sentence with nothing consoling in it. What is going to happen is going to happen.

sadā bhave bhavedbhadrameva saddharmmacāriṇām ।
duḥkhameva sadā kāmacāriṇāṁ bhavacāriṇām ॥ 7.53 ॥

English

In life after life there is only good for those who walk in the true Dharma,
and only suffering for those who walk in desire, in this wandering through existence.

Purport

The two roads stated at their starkest. The verse will be repeated almost word for word when he says it aloud to his ministers.

tasmādahaṁ parityajya kāmāśraya gṛhāśramam ।
nirjane vana ekākī vihareyaṁ samāhitaḥ ॥ 7.54 ॥

English

Therefore, abandoning the household life, that seat of desire,
I shall dwell alone in an empty forest, with a settled mind,

Purport

The decision. He will leave, and the poem will spend fifteen verses on how he arranges his departure, which is more attention than it gives the departure itself.

smṛtvā ratnatrayaṁ dhyātvā saṁbodhinihitāśayaḥ ।
bodhicaryāvrataṁ dhṛtvā saṁcareyaṁ jagaddhite ॥ 7.55 ॥

English

remembering the Three Jewels, meditating, my heart set on awakening,
and holding the vow of Bodhi-conduct, I shall move for the welfare of the world.

Purport

Even at the moment of renouncing everything, the reason given is the welfare of the world. He will have to learn in the forest what that actually requires.

iti niścitya sa prājñaḥ pracaṇḍadeva ātmavit ।
nṛpatimantriṇaḥ sarvānsamāmantryaivamādiśat ॥ 7.56 ॥

English

Having so resolved, that wise Pracaṇḍadeva, knower of the self,
summoned all the ministers of the realm and instructed them thus:

Purport

He does not slip away in the night. He calls a council and explains himself, which is the mark of the kind of king the poem has been describing.

bho sarva mantriṇo yūyaṁ śṛṇudhvaṁ me vaco hitam ।
yathā mayākhyātaṁ tathā caritumarhatha ॥ 7.57 ॥

English

Good ministers, all of you, hear these words of mine for your benefit;
as I have declared, so should you act.

हे सबै मन्त्रीहरू, मेरो हितकर वचन सुन;

Purport

He addresses them as equals rather than as subjects, and asks rather than orders.

tadyathā jarasākrānto vṛddhaḥ syāṁ jīrṇitendriyaḥ ।
tathā rogābhibhūto'pi grasiṣye mṛtyunā dhruvam ॥ 7.58 ॥

English

Thus: I shall be overtaken by old age, shall grow old, my senses worn out,
and overcome by disease I shall surely be swallowed by death.

Purport

He repeats to them exactly what he said to himself in verse 51, changing only the last word: swallowed by death rather than going to it. He is not softening it for the audience.

iti me trasyate cittaṁ durgati bhayaśaṁkitam ।
avaśyaṁ bhāvino bhāvā bhavanti bhavacāriṇām ॥ 7.59 ॥

English

At this my mind trembles, fearing an evil destiny;
what must come to be, comes to be for those who wander in existence.

यसले मेरो चित्त त्रस्त छ, दुर्गतिको भयले शंकित;

Purport

'My mind trembles.' A reigning king says this to his own cabinet. It is the most exposed sentence in the chapter.

bhave bhavetsadā bhadrameva saddharmacāriṇām ।
duḥkhameva sadākāmacāriṇāṁ bhavacāriṇām ॥ 7.60 ॥

English

In life after life there is only good for those who walk in the true Dharma,
and only suffering for those who walk in desire, in this wandering through existence.

Purport

Verse 53 repeated word for word. In a chanted text this kind of exact recurrence is how a listener knows the speaker is quoting his own settled conviction rather than improvising.

anartharājyaṁ viṣayopabhogyaṁ bhayaṁkaraṁ sarpabhayākulaṁ yat ।
anityamasāreti vicintya tatra āgāramadhyāvasituṁ na rocate ॥ 7.61 ॥

English

A kingdom brings ruin, its pleasures are to be enjoyed yet terrible, thick with the fear of serpents;
reflecting that it is impermanent and without substance, I take no delight in dwelling in a house.

राज्य अनर्थकारी छ, यसका भोग भयंकर, सर्पभयले व्याकुल;

Purport

The only verse in the chapter in a longer metre, which the poet uses to mark it out. The image of a palace thick with the fear of snakes is his own, and it is the sharpest thing he says about power.

iti matvāhamutsṛjya kāmāśrayaṁ gṛhāśramam ।
vanāśrame śubhārāme vihartumutsahe'dhunā ॥ 7.62 ॥

English

Knowing this, abandoning the household life, that seat of desire,
I now long to dwell in a forest hermitage, in a fair grove.

Purport

The plan stated publicly, in the same words he used to himself.

tadahaṁ svātmajaṁ putraṁ śaktidevaṁ nṛpāsane ।
pratiṣṭhāpya nṛpaṁ kartumicchāmi sāṁprataṁ khalu ॥ 7.63 ॥

English

So I wish now to establish my own son Śaktideva
on the royal seat and make him king.

Purport

Śaktideva, 'god of power', is named here for the first time. The succession is arranged before the departure, which is the responsible order.

tadbhavanto niśamyātra sarve'pi mama śāsanam ।
abhiṣiṁcya nṛpaṁ kṛtvā bhajatainaṁ mamātmajam ॥ 7.64 ॥

English

So all of you, hearing my instruction in this,
consecrate him and make him king, and serve this son of mine.

Purport

The ministers are asked to consecrate the successor, not merely informed of him. The legitimacy comes from their act.

ityādiṣṭaṁ narendreṇa śrutvā te mantriṇo janāḥ ।
pramāṇaṁ śāsanaṁ bharturityevaṁ pratiśuśruvuḥ ॥ 7.65 ॥

English

Hearing this instruction of the king, those ministers and people
assented, saying that their lord's command was their authority.

Purport

They agree without argument, and the poem moves straight to the father's private instruction to his son.

tadā sa rājā putraṁ śaktidevamāmantryaivamāha ।
bhedo daṇḍaḥ sāma dānamityupāyacatuṣṭayam ॥ 7.66 ॥

English

Then that king, summoning his son Śaktideva, said this:
Division, force, conciliation and gift, these are the four expedients.

Purport

The four upāyas of Indian statecraft, the standard toolkit of a king: setting rivals against each other, force, persuasion and payment. The father begins his handover with the practical part.

atrāhaṁ jarasābhikrāntaṁ nūnaṁ syādnirjitendriyam ।
tathā rogābhibhūto'pi vrajeyaṁ maraṇaṁ dhruvam ॥ 7.67 ॥

English

I shall be overtaken by old age and shall surely grow worn in my senses,
and overcome by disease I shall surely go to my death.

Purport

He says it a third time, now to his son. The poem is not being repetitive; it is showing a man who has fixed on one thought and cannot let go of it.

tadvanāśrayamicchāmi śreyaḥ ślāghena yatmanā ।
puro mṛtyu ripuṁ hanti gṛhasaṁraktameva vā ॥ 7.68 ॥

English

Therefore I long for the shelter of the forest, which my mind holds the better course;
death strikes down the enemy before it, or the man attached to his house.

त्यसैले म वनाश्रय चाहन्छु, जसलाई मेरो मन श्रेयस्कर ठान्छ;

Purport

The manuscript is rough in the first line. The sense of the second is clear and grim: death takes the man in the field and the man at home alike, so the choice of where to stand is free.

tasmātsaṁsārabhīto me bahudhā bhayaśaṁkayā ।
nātra sthātuṁ manoreme gacchāmi nirjanaṁ vanam ॥ 7.69 ॥

English

Therefore, afraid of this round of existence, with fears of many kinds,
my mind does not delight to stay here. I go to the empty forest.

Purport

He does not claim to be renouncing out of strength. He says plainly that he is afraid, and the poem does not treat that as a lesser motive.

tasmānmayā yathā proktaṁ tathā caritumarhasi ।
prajānāṁ pālanaṁ kṛtvā dharmanītyā samācara ॥ 7.70 ॥

English

Therefore you should act as I have said.
Protecting your subjects, govern by the policy of Dharma.

Purport

The instruction proper begins, and it runs for six verses. It is the most concrete advice on how to live that the poem contains anywhere.

lokānmā khekha yattāpaiḥ kuladharmma samācara ।
pareṣvapi dayāyuktairdānaṁ hi śraddhayā kuru ॥ 7.71 ॥

English

Do not afflict the people with harsh exactions; follow the customs of your house,
and give gifts with faith, with kindness even towards strangers.

Purport

Taxation first. The poem's idea of a good king begins with not squeezing people, and only then moves to piety.

prāṇātipātādattādāna kāmamithyādiṁ mā kuru ।
mā mṛṣāvāda paiśūnyaṁ pāruṣyaṁ saṁbhinnameva ca ॥ 7.72 ॥

English

Do not take life, do not take what is not given, do not act wrongly in desire;
do not lie, do not slander, do not speak harshly, do not chatter idly.

प्राणीहिंसा नगर, नदिएको नलेऊ, कामको मिथ्याचार नगर;

Purport

The first seven of the ten unwholesome acts: three of body and four of speech. A dying king's advice to his heir turns out to be the basic Buddhist moral list, given without any elaboration at all.

mābhidhyā vyāpādadoṣairmithyādṛṣṭyādi saṁtyaja ।
etāni tāni sarvāṇi dhāraya dṛḍhacetasā ॥ 7.73 ॥

English

Do not fall into covetousness or ill will, and abandon wrong view and the rest;
hold all these firmly, with a steady mind.

अभिध्या र व्यापादका दोषमा नपर, र मिथ्यादृष्टि आदि त्याग;

Purport

The last three, of the mind: greed, ill will and wrong view. The set of ten is complete, and it is the same list chapter five glossed as the ten sins cleansed at the first ford.

pāpānāṁ mūla eṣo hi sugateneti deśitaḥ ।
itthaṁ kṛte'pi nṛpaterītayo na bhaviṣyanti ॥ 7.74 ॥

English

These the Sugata has declared to be the root of all evils.
When a king acts thus, no calamities will come upon him.

Purport

The argument is turned practical. Keep these ten and your reign will not be visited by disaster, which is a claim about governance as much as about morality.

tatkasmāddharmmeṇa prāpyate rājyaṁ dharmmeṇa dhanavarddhanam ।
dharmmeṇa dhanaṁ sādhyate dharmmeṇa kāma sidhyate ॥ 7.75 ॥

English

And why? Because a kingdom is won by Dharma, and wealth increased by Dharma;
by Dharma wealth is secured, and by Dharma desire is fulfilled.

किन? किनकि धर्मले राज्य प्राप्त हुन्छ, धर्मले धनवृद्धि हुन्छ;

Purport

Dharma named four times in two lines, each time as the means to something a king actually wants. This is not an appeal to virtue for its own sake.

kāmasidhyena mokṣaṁ ca prāpyate nātra saṁśayaḥ ।
anena jñānamārgeṇa śaśāsa nṛpatiḥ sutam ॥ 7.76 ॥

English

And by the fulfilment of desire liberation too is attained; of this there is no doubt.
By this path of knowledge the king instructed his son.

Purport

The fourfold aim completed: dharma, wealth, desire and liberation, each leading to the next. The poem has invoked this Hindu scheme since chapter two, and here it lays out the whole chain.

tataḥsa janako rājā śaktidevaṁ svamātmajam ।
abhiṣiṁcya pratiṣṭhāpya nṛpāsane nṛpaṁ vyadhāt ॥ 7.77 ॥

English

Then that father, the king, consecrating Śaktideva his own son
and establishing him on the royal seat, made him king.

Purport

The consecration is performed by the father himself. The succession is complete.

jñānāṁkuśabhayenaiva kuṁcitaḥ sagajo yathāniva ।
tatra sa janakaḥ sarvaṁ putrāya sarvamarppayet ॥ 7.78 ॥

English

As an elephant is held in check by the fear of the goad of knowledge,
so there that father made over everything to his son.

Purport

The simile is of an elephant governed by a goad. The poem has just spent six verses teaching the son restraint, and now says the restraint itself is the thing that keeps power in hand.

tyaktvā parigrahān sarvān punarevamabhāṣata ।
adyārabhyāsi sarveṣāṁ lokānāmadhipaḥ prabhuḥ ॥ 7.79 ॥

English

Abandoning all his possessions, he spoke again:
From today you are the lord and master of all these people,

Purport

He gives away everything he owns before he speaks the final words. The order matters.

sarvadharmānuśāstā ca sarvasattvahitārthabhṛt ।
nanāma pitaraṁ tena śrutvā vākyaṁ rasāniva ॥ 7.80 ॥

English

teacher of all Dharma, bearer of the welfare of all beings.
Hearing these words like nectar, the son bowed to his father.

Purport

The nectar image, used in every chapter for the Buddha's teaching, applied here to a father's parting advice to his son.

dhṛtvājñāṁ te yathā tāta prajānāṁ pratipālane ।
iti praśāsya tato bhūpaḥ pracaṇḍadeva sanmatiḥ ॥ 7.81 ॥

English

Holding your command, father, in the protection of the people.
Having so instructed, that king Pracaṇḍadeva, right-minded,

Purport

The son's only line in the chapter, and it is an acceptance rather than a protest. He will not appear again.

prabodhya putrapatnyādimeko yayau vanāśrame ।
tatra sa nirjane'raṇye vivikte utajāśraye ॥ 7.82 ॥

English

having taken leave of his son, his wife and the rest, went alone to a forest hermitage.
There, in an empty and secluded wood, in a hut of leaves,

Purport

He leaves alone. The poem gives the departure one line, having given the arrangements fifteen.

tṛṇāsanasamāsīnastasthau dhyāna samāhitaḥ ।
tatraiko viharan kaṁcitkālaṁ sa ṛṣidharmmabhṛt ॥ 7.83 ॥

English

seated on a mat of grass, he remained absorbed in meditation.
Dwelling there alone for some time, that keeper of the seer's discipline,

Purport

The renunciation is achieved. He has everything an ascetic is supposed to want, and the next eight verses are him deciding it is not enough.

sarvasattvahitotsāhī manasaivaṁ vyacintayat ।
kimevaṁ nirjjane'raṇye dhyātvaiko viharanniha ॥ 7.84 ॥

English

eager for the welfare of all beings, reflected thus in his mind:
What is the use of dwelling here alone in an empty wood, meditating?

Purport

The question that turns the chapter. He is doing exactly what he set out to do, and he asks what it is for.

kasmai samupadekṣyāmi saddharmma bodhisādhanam ।
dānaśīlakṣamāvīryadhyānaprajñāsamudbhavam ॥ 7.85 ॥

English

To whom shall I teach the true Dharma, the means to awakening,
which arises from giving, conduct, patience, vigour, meditation and wisdom?

Purport

The six perfections, listed in order. The problem is not that he lacks them. It is that in an empty forest there is nobody to give them to.

puṇyaṁ sattvahitārthāya samākhyātaṁ munīśvaraiḥ ।
tadevaṁ nirjjane sthitvā kiṁ me dharmārthasādhanam ॥ 7.86 ॥

English

Merit is declared by the Lords of Sages to be for the welfare of beings.
So what use is my practice of Dharma, standing here in solitude?

Purport

He recalls a definition and measures himself against it. Merit is for beings; there are no beings here; therefore something is wrong.

vinā sattvahitārthena nirarthaṁ tapasāpi hi ।
kimatra duṣkareṇāpi tapasā siddhisādhanam ॥ 7.87 ॥

English

Without benefit to beings, even austerity is without purpose.
What use here is even the hardest penance as a means to accomplishment?

Purport

This is the most searching thing said anywhere in the Swayambhu Purana about religious practice. Austerity without benefit to others is not merely lesser; it is pointless.

kevalaṁ sadgatau śrīmatsaukhyalābhārthameva yat ।
vinā sattvahitārthena niṣphalaṁ siddhisādhanam ॥ 7.88 ॥

English

It is only for the sake of glory and happiness in a fortunate birth;
without benefit to beings, accomplishment bears no fruit.

त्यो त सद्गतिमा श्री र सुख पाउनका लागि मात्र हो;

Purport

He diagnoses his own motive and finds it selfish. Solitary practice would get him a good rebirth, and that is all, and that is not what he came for.

tadatra nirjjane sthitvā tapasā niṣphalaṁ mama ।
yatsattvānāṁ hitārthāya dharmmaśrīguṇasādhanam ॥ 7.89 ॥

English

So my austerity, standing here in solitude, is fruitless for me.
What is for the benefit of beings is the means to the glory and virtue of Dharma.

Purport

The conclusion stated plainly. He has been in the forest long enough to find out that it is the wrong place.

vidyāsiddhiḥ samṛddhiśca kṣaṇaṁ vīryabalaṁ śubham ।
tanmamaitāni sarvāṇi saṁsiddhi saṁmitānyapi ॥ 7.90 ॥

English

Accomplishment in knowledge, abundance, a moment of vigour and strength, whatever is good:
all these things of mine, though joined with attainment,

Purport

He takes stock of what the forest has actually given him, and the sentence runs on into the next verse.

vinā sattvahitārthena nirarthāni paśoriva ।
tadidaṁ vratamutsṛjya duṣkaraṁ bodhimānasaḥ ॥ 7.91 ॥

English

without benefit to beings are as purposeless as a beast's.
So, abandoning this hard vow, my mind set on awakening,

Purport

As purposeless as a beast's. He is comparing his own accumulated spiritual attainment to an animal's existence, and the comparison is not flattering.

bodhicaryāvrataṁ dhṛtvā care'haṁ jagaddhite ।
tasmāttīrtheṣu tīrtheṣu pīṭheṣu puṇyabhūmiṣu ॥ 7.92 ॥

English

holding the vow of Bodhi-conduct, I shall move for the welfare of the world.
Therefore at ford after ford, at the seats of power, in the lands of merit,

Purport

The new plan. He will walk the sacred geography of India rather than sit still in one wood, and it is that walk that will eventually bring him to the Kathmandu Valley.

saddharmmadeśanāṁ kurvan sattvebhyaḥ pracarāmyaham ।
etatpuṇyaviśuddhātmā pariśuddhatrimaṇḍalaḥ ॥ 7.93 ॥

English

teaching the true Dharma to beings, I shall go about.
Purified in self by this merit, my three spheres wholly pure,

Purport

The renunciation is not reversed. He is still an ascetic; he has only changed where he stands.

āśu bodhiṁ samāsādya saṁbuddhapada māpnuyām ।
iti niścitya sa prājñaḥ pracaṇḍadeva utthitaḥ ॥ 7.94 ॥

English

swiftly attaining awakening, I shall reach the state of a Perfect Buddha.
Having so resolved, that wise Pracaṇḍadeva rose,

Purport

He gets up off the grass mat. The second half of his life begins here.

tataḥ sattvahitārthena pracacāra samāhitaḥ ।
evaṁ saḥ pracaran dharmmamupadeśya samantataḥ ॥ 7.95 ॥

English

and for the welfare of beings he went forth with a settled mind.
Thus wandering, teaching the Dharma on every side,

Purport

The wandering teacher, which is what Krakucchanda told King Dharmākara he was in chapter four when he declined to settle in the valley.

puṇyakṣetreṣu tīrtheṣu pīṭheṣu prāgramanmudā ।
evaṁ bhraman sa sarvatra bhūtaleṣu yathākramam ॥ 7.96 ॥

English

he went joyfully among the fields of merit, the fords and the seats of power.
Thus roaming everywhere over the face of the earth in due order,

Purport

The whole pilgrimage circuit of India in half a verse. The poem is only interested in where it ends.

krameṇa saṁcarannatra himālaye samāyayau ।
atrāyātaḥ sa saṁvīkṣya sarvatra saṁpramoditaḥ ॥ 7.97 ॥

English

travelling in due course, he came here to the Himālaya.
Arrived here and looking all about, he was filled with delight.

Purport

He reaches the valley, and his first response is simply to look around and be glad. The poem has brought many travellers here and each of them arrives differently.

aho hīdaṁ mahāpīṭhamiti proktvābhyanandata ।
tataḥ sa idamālokya dharmmadhātuṁ jinālayam ॥ 7.98 ॥

English

Ah, this is a great seat of power, he said, and rejoiced.
Then, beholding this Dharmadhātu, the abode of the Jina,

Purport

A pīṭha is a seat of power in tantric geography. Chapter three said the valley floor had become one. Here a pilgrim who has walked all of India recognises it on sight.

jyotirūpaṁ prasannātmā praṇatveha samāyayau ।
atra sa samupāgatya samīkṣyainaṁ jinālayam ॥ 7.99 ॥

English

a form of light, his heart serene, he bowed and drew near.
Coming here and beholding this abode of the Jina,

Purport

He sees the light itself, uncovered, standing on its lotus. Nobody alive when this poem was written had seen it, and the man who is about to cover it is looking at it now.

yathāvidhi samabhyarcya śraddhābhakti prasannadhīḥ ।
naikapradakṣiṇīkṛtya stutvā gītairmanoharaiḥ ॥ 7.100 ॥

English

worshipping according to the rule, his mind serene with faith and devotion,
he made many circumambulations and praised him with lovely songs,

Purport

Songs rather than recited hymns. It is a small detail and the poem uses it three times in the next four verses.

aṣṭāṁgaiḥ praṇatiṁ kṛtvā dhyātvā japtvā bhajanmudā ।
tataścedaṁ sa saṁvīkṣya mañjudevasya nirmmitam ॥ 7.101 ॥

English

made the eight-limbed prostration, meditated, recited, and worshipped in joy.
Then, beholding this caitya built by Mañjudeva,

Purport

He now begins a circuit of every holy thing the poem has introduced across six chapters, and the next eight verses tick them off one by one.

caityamabhyarcya saṁstutvā gītairnatvā bhajanmudā ।
tato'sau ca mahādevīṁ yonirūpāṁ khagānanām ॥ 7.102 ॥

English

worshipping that caitya and praising it with songs, he bowed and worshipped in joy.
Then that great goddess Khagānanā, in the form of a yoni,

Purport

Guhyeśvarī is described here in her aniconic form, which is what is actually at the shrine near Pashupatinath: not an image but a covered opening in the ground. The poem says so plainly.

samālokya prasannātmā yathāvidhi samarccayet ।
tatrāpi sa mahāsattvaḥ stutvā gītairmanoharaiḥ ॥ 7.103 ॥

English

seeing her, his heart serene, he worshipped her according to the rule.
There too that great being, praising her with lovely songs,

Purport

The goddess of chapter three, worshipped by the man who will do the work of chapter seven.

aṣṭāṅgaiḥ praṇatiṁ kṛtvā pradakṣiṇātyanekaśaḥ ।
śraddhayā śaraṇaṁ gatvā smṛtvā dhyātvā samāhitaḥ ॥ 7.104 ॥

English

made the eight-limbed prostration and many circumambulations,
and going to her for refuge with faith, remembered and meditated with a settled mind,

Purport

The same sequence of acts he performed at the Dharmadhātu. He is treating each shrine with the same care.

tadvidyā dhāraṇīmantraṁ japitvā prābhyanandata ।
tato'sau ca mahāsattvo vāgmatīpramukhānyapi ॥ 7.105 ॥

English

and reciting her spell and dhāraṇī, rejoiced.
Then that great being, seeing the Vāgmatī and the other

Purport

The rivers of chapters four and five come next in his circuit.

tīrthānyetāni sarvāṇi sa samīkṣya prābhyanandata ।
tataḥ sa teṣu tīrtheṣu sarveṣvapi yathākramam ॥ 7.106 ॥

English

fords, all of them, rejoiced.
Then at all those fords in due order

Purport

All of them, which after chapter five means at least eighteen. He is a thorough pilgrim.

snātvā dānavratādīni kṛtvā bhajan pramoditaḥ ।
tato'ṣṭau vītarāgāṁśca dṛṣṭvā sa saṁpraharṣitaḥ ॥ 7.107 ॥

English

he bathed, gave gifts, kept vows and the rest, and worshipped in delight.
Then, seeing the eight Vītarāgas, he was filled with joy,

Purport

The eight self-arisen lights of chapter four, the last item on the circuit. Every holy thing the poem has introduced has now been visited by this one man.

yathāvidhi samabhyarcya stutvā natvā bhajan kramāt ।
tataḥ pracaṇḍadevaḥ sa bodhisattvaḥ prasāditaḥ ॥ 7.108 ॥

English

and worshipping according to the rule, praising and bowing, he worshipped them in turn.
Then that Pracaṇḍadeva, the Bodhisattva, made serene,

Purport

The circuit is complete, and he has made his decision.

atraiva sarvadāśritya vrataṁ caritumaicchata ।
tataḥ sa vimalālokya himālaye samantataḥ ॥ 7.109 ॥

English

wished to take refuge here always and to practise the vow.
Then, looking all about the Himālaya,

Purport

The wandering ends. The man who left his kingdom because a forest was too still has found somewhere he wants to stop.

saddharma paramānandaṁ bhuktvotsahe sunivṛttau ।
tataḥ sa mañjudevasya śiṣyaṁ śāsana sambhṛtam ॥ 7.110 ॥

English

enjoying the highest bliss of the true Dharma, he longed for perfect peace.
Then, coming to a disciple of Mañjudeva, upholder of his teaching,

Purport

The lineage from chapter three is still running. Mañjudeva is dead, but the community he founded on the hill has a teacher in it who can ordain.

sadguruṁ samupāśritya prārthayadevamānataḥ ।
bhadantātra puṇyakṣetre mahāpīṭhe himālaye ॥ 7.111 ॥

English

taking refuge in that true teacher, he made this request, bowing:
Venerable one, here in this field of merit, this great seat of power, the Himālaya,

Purport

A king who abdicated a throne in Bengal asks a hill monk for ordination. The poem does not remark on it.

pravrajyāsaṁvaraṁ dhṛtvā saṁsthātumutsahe sadā ।
tadbhavān kṛpayā mahyaṁ saṁbodhijñānasādhanam ॥ 7.112 ॥

English

I long to remain always, holding the vow of going forth.
So of your kindness, grant me the means to the knowledge of awakening,

Purport

The request is for a vow, not a place. He wants to be made a monk here.

pravrajyāsaṁvaraṁ dātuṁ samarhati jagaddhite ।
iti saṁprārthitaṁ tena niśamya sa guṇākaraḥ ॥ 7.113 ॥

English

and be pleased to give me the vow of going forth, for the welfare of the world.
Thus entreated by him, that mine of virtue, hearing him,

Purport

'For the welfare of the world' again. He has kept the phrase since the forest.

bodhisattvaṁ suvijñaṁ taṁ sampaśyannevamabravīt ।
ehi bhadra samīcchā te yadyasti bauddhasambare ॥ 7.114 ॥

English

looking upon that wise Bodhisattva, said this:
Come, good man. If you have the wish for the Buddhist vow,

Purport

Granted in a word. 'Come' is the oldest formula of admission in Buddhist literature, the one the Buddha himself is said to have used.

pravrajyāvratamādhāya saṁcarasva samāhitaḥ ।
ityuktvā sa mahābhijñaḥ pravrajitaṁ vidhāya tam ॥ 7.115 ॥

English

take up the vow of going forth and live with a settled mind.
Having said this, that one of great knowledge made him go forth,

Purport

The ordination happens immediately, as it did for the seven hundred in chapter four.

bodhicaryāvrataṁ datvā pracārayejjagaddhite ।
tatra sa muṇḍitapātrī surakta cīvarāvṛtaḥ ॥ 7.116 ॥

English

and giving him the vow of Bodhi-conduct, set him to work for the welfare of the world.
There, his head shaved, carrying a bowl, clad in deep ochre robes,

Purport

Shaved head, bowl, ochre robe. The same three marks the poem gave the ordinands in chapter four.

brahmacārī yatirbhikṣurniḥkleśo'rhan sudhīrabhūt ।
tasya nāma tadā śāntaśrībhikṣuriti kalpitam ॥ 7.117 ॥

English

he became a celibate, an ascetic, a monk, free of defilement, an Arhat and wise.
His name was then given as the monk Śāntaśrī.

Purport

Pracaṇḍadeva, 'fierce god', becomes Śāntaśrī, 'glory of peace'. The renaming reverses the meaning of the old name exactly, and chapter 9 verse 17 explains it: his six senses shone with the glory of peace, and so he was called Śāntaśrī. He is not yet Shantikar. That second name is earned later, for work he has not done at this point in the story, and chapter 9 verse 24 gives it to him only after he has quieted the great calamity and brought back the rain.

sa devāsuralokānāmapi vandyārcito'bhavat ।
tadārabhya sa śāntaśrīdharmadhātau jinālaye ॥ 7.118 ॥

English

He became worthy of the homage and worship even of the worlds of gods and anti-gods.
From that time Śāntaśrī, at the Dharmadhātu, the abode of the Jina,

Purport

The settled life he was looking for. What follows happens because he spends his days sitting in front of the light and looking at it.

triratnabhajanaṁ kṛtvā tasthau bodhivrataṁ caran ।
sa ekasmin dine cemaṁ jyotirūpaṁ prabhāsvaram ॥ 7.119 ॥

English

worshipping the Three Jewels, remained, practising the vow of awakening.
One day, seeing this radiant form of light

Purport

One day. The whole of the rest of the chapter comes out of a single morning's thought.

ratnapadmāsanāsīnaṁ paśyannevaṁ vyacintayet ।
aho hyayaṁ svayaṁ jāto jyotirūpaḥ prabhāsvaraḥ ॥ 7.120 ॥

English

seated on a jewelled lotus throne, he reflected thus:
Ah, this self-arisen form of light, shining,

Purport

He is looking at the same thing the gods came down for in chapter two, and what occurs to him is a worry.

ratnapadmāsanāsīnaḥ saṁtiṣṭhate jagaddhite ।
kiyatkālamayaṁ śrīmān dharmmadhāturjinālayaḥ ॥ 7.121 ॥

English

seated on a jewelled lotus throne, stands for the welfare of the world.
For how long will this glorious Dharmadhātu, abode of the Jina,

Purport

For how long. It is a caretaker's question, and nobody in the poem has asked it before.

evaṁ saṁbhāṣayan lokān saṁsthāsyate jagaddhite ।
yataḥ kalau samaye lokāḥ pañcakaṣāyite ॥ 7.122 ॥

English

stand thus, speaking to the people for the welfare of the world?
For in the Kali age, in that time, when the world is stained with the five defilements,

Purport

The five defilements of a degenerate age: the shortening of life, wrong views, the growth of the afflictions, the decline of beings, and the decay of the age itself. He is thinking about a future he will not live to see.

sarve lokā durācārā bhaviṣyanti durāśayāḥ ।
madābhimānino duṣṭā lobhinaḥ kāmacāriṇaḥ ॥ 7.123 ॥

English

all people will be of evil conduct and evil intent,
drunk with pride, wicked, greedy, walking in desire,

Purport

The catalogue of a bad age begins, and it runs for three verses. It is the bleakest passage in the poem.

īrṣyālavaḥ pramattāśca mātsaryavyākulāśayāḥ ।
kleśāhaṁkāragarvāndhā nirvivekāḥ pramādinaḥ ॥ 7.124 ॥

English

envious and heedless, their minds troubled by meanness,
blind with affliction, egotism and arrogance, without discernment, careless,

Purport

Fourteen faults named in two verses, and not one of them is about unbelief. They are all about character.

kāmabhogātisaṁraktā daśākuśalacāriṇaḥ ।
tadā kathamayaṁ śrīmān jyotirūpaḥ prabhāsvaraḥ ॥ 7.125 ॥

English

wholly given over to the enjoyment of desire, walking in the ten unwholesome ways.
How then shall this glorious radiant form of light,

Purport

The ten unwholesome acts, the same list the king gave his son in verses 72 and 73. He is describing an age in which his own advice will be ignored.

ratnapadmāsanāsīna evaṁ tiṣṭhejjagaddhite ।
nūnaṁ ye lobhino duṣṭāḥ kleśavyākulamānasāḥ ॥ 7.126 ॥

English

seated on a jewelled lotus throne, stand thus for the welfare of the world?
Surely those who are greedy and wicked, their minds troubled by affliction,

Purport

And here is the practical fear. A shrine made of jewels, standing in the open, in an age of greedy people.

imaṁ caityaṁ pratikṣipya ratnāni saṁharettadā ।
duṣṭāśca tathānye'pi duṣṭāḥ kleśābhimāninaḥ ॥ 7.127 ॥

English

will throw down this caitya and carry off its jewels.
And other wicked men too, afflicted and full of pride,

Purport

Chapter one said only that people in the Kali age would carry it off. This verse says how: they will pull the thing down first.

jyotirūpamimaṁ caityaṁ dhvaṁsayiṣyanti sarvathā ।
evaṁ tadā kalau kāle dhvaṁsite'smin jinālaye ॥ 7.128 ॥

English

will utterly destroy this caitya of light.
And when in that time, in the Kali age, this abode of the Jina is destroyed,

Purport

Not theft only but destruction. He is imagining the hill with nothing left on it.

mahāpātakasaṁbhūtaṁ mahotpātaṁ bhaveddhruvam ।
iti hetorahaṁ dharmadhātorasya surakṣaṇe ॥ 7.129 ॥

English

a great calamity will surely arise, born of that great sin.
For this reason, for the protection of this Dharmadhātu,

Purport

The valley's freedom from calamity has been promised since chapter one and tied throughout to the shrine. If the shrine goes, so does the promise.

guptiṁ kartuṁ śilācchādya caityaṁ kuryāṁ mahocchrayam ।
tadā sarve'pi lokāste imaṁ stūpaṁ mahocchritam ॥ 7.130 ॥

English

I shall make a concealment, covering it with a stone, and build a high caitya.
Then all those people, seeing this lofty stupa,

Purport

The plan. A stone over the light, and a tall stupa over the stone. This single verse is the answer to the question Maitreya asked in verse 2.

samīkṣya śraddhayā bhaktyā bhajiṣyanti prasāditāḥ ।
tadaitatpuṇyabhāvena sarvadātra samantataḥ ॥ 7.131 ॥

English

will worship it with faith and devotion, made serene.
Then by the power of that merit, here on every side always

Purport

The reasoning is subtle and worth noticing. A visible stupa will still be worshipped, and the worship will still produce merit. Only the light itself is hidden.

subhikṣaṁ maṅgalotsāhaṁ nirutpātaṁ bhaveddhruvam ।
iti dhyātvā sa śāntaśrīḥ śāstāraṁ taṁ punarmudā ॥ 7.132 ॥

English

there will surely be abundance of food, festivity and freedom from calamity.
Having thought thus, that Śāntaśrī joyfully again

Purport

The three promises kept intact by the covering. He has worked out how to lose the sight of the thing without losing what it does.

upetya sāñjalirnatvā prārthayadevamādarāt ।
bhadanta sadguro śāstaryadicchāmīha sāmpratam ॥ 7.133 ॥

English

came to that teacher, bowed with folded hands and made this request:
Venerable true teacher, what I now wish here is this:

Purport

He asks permission before altering the shrine, exactly as Mañjuśrī asked the shrine's own pardon before draining its lake in chapter three.

dharmmadhātumimaṁ caityaṁ guptiṁ kartuṁ surakṣaṇe ।
tadūrdhvaṁ śilayācchādya sviṣṭikābhiḥ samucchritam ॥ 7.134 ॥

English

to make a concealment of this caitya, the Dharmadhātu, for its protection;
covering it above with a stone, and with good bricks raised high,

यो धर्मधातु चैत्यको रक्षाका लागि गुप्ति बनाउने;

Purport

Stone and brick, the same two materials chapter one named in verse 67. The poem's own details agree with each other across six chapters.

stūpaṁ kṛtvā pratiṣṭhāpya sthirīkarttuṁ samutsahe ।
ityatra me bhavāñchāstā guptiṁ kṛtvābhirakṣaṇe ॥ 7.135 ॥

English

to build a stupa, consecrate it and make it firm, I long to do.
So in this may you, my teacher, for the protection and concealment

Purport

He wants to build, consecrate and make firm. The third verb is the one that matters: he is thinking about how long it will stand.

dharmmadhātorjagadbharturanujñāṁ dātumarhati ।
iti saṁprārthite tena śāntaśriyā niśamya saḥ ॥ 7.136 ॥

English

of the Dharmadhātu, lord of the world, be pleased to grant me leave.
Thus entreated by that Śāntaśrī, hearing him,

Purport

The request is complete. What the teacher says back is the most technically interesting thing in the chapter.

mahāmatirmahāsattvaṁ taṁ paśyannevamabravīt ।
bhadra svayambhuvastasya guptiṁ kartuṁ yadīcchasi ॥ 7.137 ॥

English

that one of great intellect, looking upon that great being, said this:
Good man, if you wish to make a concealment of that Self-Arisen One,

Purport

He does not refuse. He attaches a condition, and the condition is about what kind of practitioner the man is.

pratyekaṁ śrāvakaṁ yānaṁ muktvā mahāyāne saṁśritaḥ ।
vajrābhiṣekamādāya cara vajravrataṁ punaḥ ॥ 7.138 ॥

English

then leaving the vehicles of the disciple and the solitary Buddha, take refuge in the great vehicle,
receive the vajra initiation, and practise again the vajra vow.

Purport

Monastic ordination is not enough for this work. He must move from the disciple's path to the Mahayana and take tantric initiation. It is the same technical point chapter six made about Dharmaśrīmitra: certain things cannot be done without abhiṣeka.

tato mārān vinirjjitya samārādhya jineśvaram ।
saṁprārthya śilayācchādya kuru stūpaṁ samucchritam ॥ 7.139 ॥

English

Then, having conquered the Māras and propitiated the Lord of Jinas,
and having asked his leave, cover it with a stone and build the stupa high.

Purport

Even after initiation he is told to ask the shrine itself. The poem is consistent about this: nothing in the valley is altered without permission.

iti śāstrā samādiṣṭaṁ niśamya sa pramoditaḥ ।
śāstāraṁ taṁ praṇatvā ca prārthayadevamādarāt ॥ 7.140 ॥

English

Hearing this instruction of the teacher, he rejoiced,
and bowing to that teacher, made this request with reverence:

Purport

He accepts the condition at once, and immediately asks the same teacher to fulfil it.

sadgururme bhavāñchāstā dharmmadhātusurakṣaṇe ।
vajracaryāvrataṁ datvā cāraya māṁ jagaddhite ॥ 7.141 ॥

English

My teacher, you are my master; for the protection of the Dharmadhātu
give me the vow of vajra conduct and set me to work for the welfare of the world.

Purport

He asks the man who told him what he needed to be the one who gives it. There is no journey this time; the teacher is standing in front of him.

iti saṁprārthite tena śāntaśriyā niśamya saḥ ।
mahāmatirmahāsattvaṁ taṁ samīkṣyaivamabravīt ॥ 7.142 ॥

English

Thus entreated by that Śāntaśrī, hearing him,
that one of great intellect, looking upon that great being, said this:

Purport

The formula of request and answer, used twice in six verses to mark the two separate permissions he needs.

yadi śraddhāsti te bhadra vajracaryā mahāvratam ।
yathāvidhi pradāsyāmi tadgṛhāṇa jagaddhite ॥ 7.143 ॥

English

If you have faith, good man, in the great vow of vajra conduct,
I shall give it to you according to the rule; receive it, for the welfare of the world.

Purport

Faith is the only qualification asked for, exactly as Mañjuśrī asked of Dharmaśrīmitra in chapter six.

ityuktvā sa mahācāryastasmai śāntaśriye kramāt ।
sābhiṣekaṁ mahāyāne vajracaryāvrataṁ dadau ॥ 7.144 ॥

English

Having said this, that great teacher gave to Śāntaśrī in due order
the vow of vajra conduct in the great vehicle, together with initiation.

Purport

The initiation is given. The poem has now described three of them: Dharmaśrīmitra's in chapter six, and this one, with the Dharmadhātu Vāgīśvara maṇḍala behind both.

śāntaśrīvajrācārya iti sthāpitaḥ tatkṣaṇe'rye cādhijñaprāpto'bhūt ।
tataḥ prāptābhiṣekaḥ sa śāntaśrī vajrayogavit ॥ 7.145 ॥

English

He was established as Śāntaśrī Vajrācārya, and in that moment attained higher knowledge.
Then, having received initiation, that Śāntaśrī, knower of the vajra yoga,

Purport

Śāntaśrī Vajrācārya. The title is the one borne by the married Newar Buddhist priesthood of the valley to this day, and chapter three gave it to Mañjudeva. This verse puts the man who built the stupa into that same lineage.

sa svātmānaṁ dakṣiṇāṁ tasmai gurave pradadau mudā ।
tataḥ sa vajradhṛgyogī mahābhijñaḥ susiddhimān ॥ 7.146 ॥

English

gave himself joyfully to that teacher as the fee.
Then that holder of the vajra, that yogin of great knowledge and great accomplishment,

Purport

He offers himself as the fee, exactly as Dharmaśrīmitra did in chapter six after being told no fee was needed. The parallel is deliberate.

svakuleśaṁ samārādhya sagaṇaṁ prābhajanmudā ।
tataḥ sa vajradhṛgyogī mahābhijñaḥ susiddhimān ॥ 7.147 ॥

English

propitiating his own lineage deity, worshipped him joyfully with his company.
Then that holder of the vajra, that yogin of great knowledge and great accomplishment,

Purport

The second line repeats verse 146's second line word for word, which looks like a copyist's doubling. The Sanskrit is left as it stands.

saddharmmasādhanotsāhī sarvavidyādhipopyabhūt ।
tataḥ śāsturanujñāṁ sa samāsādya prasāditaḥ ॥ 7.148 ॥

English

eager in the practice of the true Dharma, became lord of every branch of knowledge.
Then, receiving the teacher's leave, made serene,

Purport

He is now qualified and permitted. One thing remains, which is to ask the shrine.

dharmadhātuṁ samārādhya prārthayadevamānataḥ ।
bhagavannātha sarvajña bhavatāṁ rakṣaṇāya yat ॥ 7.149 ॥

English

propitiating the Dharmadhātu, he made this request, bowing:
Blessed Lord, Protector, Omniscient One, for your protection

Purport

He addresses the light directly. Chapter one said it used to speak; nobody in this chapter records it answering.

jyotirūpaṁ samācchādya caityaṁ karttumihotsahe ।
tadbhavān trijagannātha kṛpayā me prasīdatu ॥ 7.150 ॥

English

I long to cover over this form of light and build a caitya here.
So may you, Lord of the three worlds, be gracious to me in your kindness.

Purport

He says exactly what he intends to do, in plain words, to the thing he intends to do it to.

yadatrāpyaparādho me tatsarvaṁ kṣantumarhati ।
iti saṁprārthya sa prājño jyotirūpaṁ jinālayam ॥ 7.151 ॥

English

And whatever offence of mine there may be in this, may you forgive it all.
Having so prayed, that wise one, this abode of the Jina, this form of light,

Purport

He asks forgiveness in advance for what he is about to do. It is the same courtesy Mañjuśrī showed the lake in chapter three, and it tells you the poem does not think of the covering as an unmixed good.

sa ratnapadmamācchādya śilayā samagopayat ।
taduparīṣṭikābhiśca vidhāya caityamucchritam ॥ 7.152 ॥

English

covering the jewelled lotus with a stone, concealed it,
and above it, with bricks, made a caitya raised high;

र त्यसमाथि इँटाले अग्लो चैत्य बनाए;

Purport

The act itself, in two lines. Everything in the poem before this moment was visible; everything after it has been a building. What stands on the hill today begins here.

yathāvidhi pratiṣṭhāpya mahotsāhaiḥ sadābhajat ।
tata idañca pucchāgraṁ mañjudevasya nirmmitam ॥ 7.153 ॥

English

consecrating it according to the rule, he worshipped it always with great festivity.
Then this Pucchāgra caitya too, built by Mañjudeva,

Purport

Pucchāgra, 'tip of the tail', was named in chapter one as the place the Buddha stayed when he came to Nepal. It gets covered too.

caityaṁ sa śilayācchādya stūpaṁ vyadhāttathottamam ।
idaṁ stūpaṁ ca sa śāntaśrīḥ pratiṣṭhāpya yathāvidhi ॥ 7.154 ॥

English

he covered with a stone and made into an excellent stupa likewise.
And having consecrated this stupa according to the rule, that Śāntaśrī

Purport

Two shrines covered in the same way on the same principle. He is being systematic.

sarvadā śraddhayā bhaktyā mahotsāhairmudābhajat ।
tataścāsau mahācāryaḥ samārādhya pañcadevatāḥ ॥ 7.155 ॥

English

worshipped it always with faith, devotion and great festivity, in joy.
Then that great teacher, propitiating the five deities,

Purport

The last thing he does is the one a visitor to Swayambhu is most likely to walk past without knowing what it is.

pañcasu tān pureṣvevaṁ pratiṣṭhāpya sadābhajat ।
tadyathā devatā pañca prathamaṁ vāyudevatā ॥ 7.156 ॥

English

established them in five cities and worshipped them always.
Thus the five deities: first, the deity of wind

Purport

The five puras are real and are still there, set into the hill around the great stupa. What follows is the earliest full list of them in the poem.

vāyupure pratiṣṭhāpya vahnipure'gnidevatā ।
nāgapure ca nāgendro vasupure vasundharām ॥ 7.157 ॥

English

established in Vāyupura, and the deity of fire in Vahnipura,
the Nāga lord in Nāgapura, and Vasundharā in Vasupura,

Purport

Vāyupura, Vahnipura, Nāgapura, Vasupura. Four of the five shrines on the Swayambhu hill, each a small chamber built into the platform, each still receiving worship.

śāntipure mahāśrīmatsambaraṁ sugaṇaṁ tathā ।
etān sarvān samārādhya sa ācāryo yathāvidhi ॥ 7.158 ॥

English

and in Śāntipura the glorious Saṁvara with his company.
Propitiating all of these according to the rule, that teacher

Purport

Śāntipura, 'city of peace', shares its name with Śāntaśrī himself. It is the most famous of the five, a sealed underground chamber on the north side of the stupa that tradition says the ācārya entered and never left, and which is opened only in times of drought.

mahotsāhaiḥ samabhyarcya prābhajan sarvadā mudā ।
evaṁ kṛtvā sa ācāryaḥ śāntaśrīḥ kṛtakṛtyo maharddhikaḥ ॥ 7.159 ॥

English

worshipped them with great festivity and honoured them always in joy.
Having done this, that teacher Śāntaśrī, his work accomplished, of great power,

Purport

Kṛtakṛtya, 'having done what was to be done', is the phrase used of an arhat at the end of the path. The man who left Bengal because his kingdom felt purposeless has earned it.

bhadraśrīmantrasaṁsiddhaḥ sarvavidyādhipo'bhavat ।
tato bhūyaḥ sa ācāryo bodhisattvo mahāmatiḥ ॥ 7.160 ॥

English

accomplished in the glorious mantras, became lord of every branch of knowledge.
Then again that teacher, the Bodhisattva of great intellect,

Purport

One more decision remains, and it is the quietest one in the chapter.

sarvasattvahitotsāhī dhyātvaivaṁ samacintayat ।
atraivamahamārādhya sarvān devān yathāvidhi ॥ 7.161 ॥

English

eager for the welfare of all beings, meditated and reflected thus:
Here, having propitiated all the deities according to the rule

Purport

He takes stock of the work, as Pracaṇḍadeva took stock of his reign in verse 49.

pratiṣṭhāpya samabhyarcya mahotsāhairbhaje mudā ।
tathātra sarvadā dharmmadhātuvāgīśvaraṁ sadā ॥ 7.162 ॥

English

and established and worshipped them with great festivity in joy,
so here always I shall remember, meditate upon and propitiate

Purport

The name Vāgīśvara returns, the one chapter six spent two hundred verses explaining. The two chapters lock together here.

smṛtvā dhyātvā samārādhya saṁtiṣṭheyaṁ jagaddhite ।
iti dhyātvā sa śāntaśrīrācāryastriguṇārthabhṛt ॥ 7.163 ॥

English

the Dharmadhātu Vāgīśvara, and shall remain for the welfare of the world.
Having thought thus, that teacher Śāntaśrī, bearer of the threefold aim,

Purport

He decides to stay. A king who could not bear to sit still in a forest ends by choosing to sit still on a hill, because this time there is something to sit in front of.

sarvasattvahitārthena tathāvatraiva nanditaḥ ।
evaṁ tā devatā bhaktyā bhajanti ye yathāvidhi ॥ 7.164 ॥

English

for the welfare of all beings, remained right here, rejoicing.
Thus those who worship these deities with devotion, according to the rule,

Purport

The story ends here, and the rest of the chapter is what it is for. He sits down in front of the shrine he has just hidden and does not get up again. Newar tradition holds that he is still inside Śāntipura, and that is where the chapter leaves him.

te bhadraśrīguṇāpannā bhaveyurbodhicāriṇaḥ ।
tadviśeṣaphalaṁ cāpi śṛṇu maitreya sāṁpratam ॥ 7.165 ॥

English

become endowed with glory and virtue, and walkers of the path to awakening.
And hear now, Maitreya, the particular fruit of that as well.

Purport

The formula that opened the catalogues of chapters two, four and five. A short one follows, one entry for each of the five shrines.

sarvasattvānubodhārthaṁ vakṣyāmyatra samāsataḥ ।
tadyathā ye samārādhya sagaṇāṁ vāyudevatām ॥ 7.166 ॥

English

For the awakening of all beings I shall tell it here in brief.
Thus: those who propitiate the deity of wind with his company,

Purport

Vāyupura first, following the order in which the shrines were established.

yathāvidhi samabhyarcya saṁbhajante samādarāt ।
teṣāṁ vātamahotpātabhayaṁ kvāpi na vidyate ॥ 7.167 ॥

English

worshipping according to the rule and honouring them with reverence,
have no fear anywhere of great calamity from wind.

Purport

Each shrine guards against the thing it governs. This is the practical logic of the five, and it explains why a valley would build them.

nīrogyaṁ śrīsamāpannaṁ kāmabhojyaṁ sadā bhave ।
ye cāpyevaṁ samārādhya sagaṇāṁ vahnidevatām ॥ 7.168 ॥

English

Health, the attainment of glory and the enjoyment of desire are theirs in every life.
And those who likewise propitiate the deity of fire with his company,

Purport

Vahnipura second. In a valley of timber-framed brick houses packed wall to wall, a shrine against fire was not a symbolic precaution.

yathāvidhi samabhyarcya sambhajante samādarāt ।
teṣāṁ vahnimahotpātaṁ bhayaṁ kvāpi na vidyate ॥ 7.169 ॥

English

worshipping according to the rule and honouring them with reverence,
have no fear anywhere of great calamity from fire.

Purport

The wording repeats verse 167 exactly with one word changed, which is how the poem builds its short catalogues.

paripuṣṭendriyārogya mahāsaukhyaṁ sadā bhave ।
ye cāpyevaṁ samārādhya sagaṇāṁ nāgadevatām ॥ 7.170 ॥

English

Sound faculties, health and great happiness are theirs in every life.
And those who likewise propitiate the Nāga deity with his company,

Purport

Nāgapura third. The nāgas govern water, and therefore rain, and therefore the harvest.

yathāvidhi samabhyarcya prabhajante sadā mudā ।
teṣāṁ na vidyate kvāpi durbhikṣotpātajaṁ bhayam ॥ 7.171 ॥

English

worshipping according to the rule and honouring them always in joy,
have no fear anywhere of calamity arising from famine.

Purport

The serpents are asked for rain and the reward is named as freedom from famine. Nothing about this is metaphorical for a valley living on one harvest.

bhadraśrīratnasaṁpattikāmabhojyaṁ sadā bhave ।
ye cāpyevaṁ samārādhya sagaṇāṁ śrīvasundharām ॥ 7.172 ॥

English

Glory, jewels, wealth and the enjoyment of desire are theirs in every life.
And those who likewise propitiate the glorious Vasundharā with her company,

Purport

Vasupura fourth. Vasundharā is the goddess of the earth and of wealth, and she remains among the most worshipped deities in Newar households.

yathāvidhi samabhyarcya saṁbhajante samādarāt ।
teṣāṁ dāridryaduḥkhādi bhayaṁ nāsti kadācana ॥ 7.173 ॥

English

worshipping according to the rule and honouring her with reverence,
never have any fear of poverty or the suffering it brings.

Purport

Wind, fire, famine, poverty. Four of the five shrines guard against things that actually happened to people in this valley.

bhadraśrīsadguṇāpannamahāsaṁpatsukhaṁ sadā ।
ye cāpyevaṁ samārādhya sagaṇaṁ sambaraṁ jinam ॥ 7.174 ॥

English

Glory, virtue, great wealth and happiness are theirs always.
And those who likewise propitiate the Jina Saṁvara with his company,

Purport

Śāntipura last, and its deity is Saṁvara, one of the great tantric Buddhas of the Newar tradition. The fifth shrine guards against something different from the other four.

yathāvidhi samabhyarcya saṁbhajante sadādarāt ।
teṣāṁ mārāpasargajaṁ bhayaṁ kvāpi na vidyate ॥ 7.175 ॥

English

worshipping according to the rule and honouring them with reverence,
have no fear anywhere arising from the assaults of Māra.

Purport

Not wind or fire or hunger but Māra, the tempter. The four outer shrines protect the body and the innermost one protects the mind.

saddharmmaratnasaṁpattimahaiśvaryasukhaṁ sadā ।
ye cedaṁ caityamārādhya mañjudevasya nirmmitam ॥ 7.176 ॥

English

The wealth of the jewel of the true Dharma, great sovereignty and happiness are theirs always.
And those who propitiate this caitya built by Mañjudeva,

Purport

The catalogue of the five is complete, and the poem now adds the two great shrines themselves.

yathāvidhi samabhyarcya saṁbhajante samādarāt ।
te durbhagā durācārā duṣṭā syurna kadācana ॥ 7.177 ॥

English

worshipping according to the rule and honouring it with reverence,
are never unfortunate, never of evil conduct, never wicked.

Purport

Three negatives, and the middle one is the interesting claim. Worship at this shrine is said to make people behave better, not merely fare better.

sarve dharmādhipā nāthā bhaveyuḥ śrīguṇākarāḥ ।
ye cāpīdaṁ samārādhya dharmmadhātuṁ jinālayam ॥ 7.178 ॥

English

All of them become lords of the Dharma, protectors, mines of glory and virtue.
And those who propitiate this Dharmadhātu, the abode of the Jina,

Purport

And last of all the great stupa itself, now covered, still worshipped.

yathāvidhi samabhyarcya sambhajante samādarāt ।
te sarvve vimalātmāno bhadraśrīsadguṇāśrayāḥ ॥ 7.179 ॥

English

worshipping according to the rule and honouring it with reverence,
all of them become stainless in self, vessels of glory and true virtue,

Purport

The reward for worshipping the covered shrine is the same as the reward chapter two gave for worshipping it when it was open. Concealment has cost the worshipper nothing.

bodhisattvā mahābhijñā bhaveyurbodhicāriṇaḥ ।
ya etā devatāḥ sarvāḥ smṛtvā dhyātvāpi sarvadā ॥ 7.180 ॥

English

Bodhisattvas of great knowledge, walkers of the path to awakening.
And those who, remembering and meditating upon all these deities always,

Purport

The threshold drops once more, as it does at the end of every catalogue in this poem.

English

and even uttering their names, worship them with reverence,
they too shall never go to an evil destiny at any time.

Purport

Saying the name is enough. The poem has made this offer in chapters two, four, five and six, and makes it here for the last time.

sadā sadgatisaṁjātā bhaveyuḥ śrīguṇāśrayāḥ ।
tataste sukṛtāraktāḥ sadharmmaguṇalālasāḥ ॥ 7.182 ॥

English

Always born in fortunate states, they become vessels of glory and virtue;
then, delighting in good deeds, longing for the virtues of the true Dharma,

सधैँ सद्गतिमा जन्मिएर श्री र गुणका आश्रय हुन्छन्;

Purport

The familiar guarantee, which by the seventh chapter functions as a refrain rather than an argument.

triratnaśaraṇaṁ kṛtvā saṁcareran sadā śubhe ।
tataste vimalātmānaḥ pariśuddhendriyāśayāḥ ॥ 7.183 ॥

English

taking refuge in the Three Jewels, they move always in what is good.
Then, stainless in self, wholly pure in faculties and intention,

Purport

Refuge, then conduct, then purity. The order is the one the poem has used from its first chapter.

bodhisattvā mahāsattvāścaturbrahmavihāriṇaḥ ।
sarvasattvahitādhānaṁ careyurbodhisambaram ॥ 7.184 ॥

English

Bodhisattvas and great beings, dwelling in the four Brahmavihāras,
holding the welfare of all beings, they keep the vow of awakening.

Purport

The four brahmavihāras: kindness, compassion, joy in others' good fortune, and evenness of mind, named in every chapter of this poem.

tataste bodhisaṁbhāraṁ pūrayitvā yathākramam ।
daśabhūmīśvarā nāthā bhaveyuḥ sugatātmajāḥ ॥ 7.185 ॥

English

Then, fulfilling the accumulations for awakening in due order,
as lords of the ten stages, protectors, they become sons of the Sugata.

Purport

The ten bhūmis of the bodhisattva path, named in chapter three as well.

tataste nirmmalātmānaḥ saṁsāragati niḥspṛhāḥ ।
arhantaḥ sabalaṁ māraṁ nirjitya syurniraṁjanāḥ ॥ 7.186 ॥

English

Then, stainless in self, without craving for the round of existence,
as Arhats, having conquered Māra with all his forces, they become free of stain;

अर्हत भई, सबलसहित मारलाई जितेर निरञ्जन हुन्छन्;

Purport

Māra with all his forces. The image of an army defeated is the oldest way this tradition has of describing the last obstacle.

trividhāṁ bodhimāsādya saddharmmaguṇabhāskarāḥ ।
sarvasattvahitārthena saṁbuddhapadamāpnuyuḥ ॥ 7.187 ॥

English

attaining the threefold awakening, suns of the virtue of the true Dharma,
for the welfare of all beings they reach the state of a Perfect Buddha.

Purport

The destination named in the same words at the close of all seven chapters, with 'for the welfare of all beings' attached as it always is.

ye'pyetadguṇamāhātmyaṁ śrutvāpyatyanumoditāḥ ।
tathā tatpuṇyamāhātmyaṁ praśaṁsanti samādarāt ॥ 7.188 ॥

English

And those who, merely hearing the greatness of these qualities, rejoice in it,
and praise that greatness of merit with reverence,

Purport

The lowest threshold the poem ever sets. Not worship, not a name uttered, but simply hearing about it and being glad.

te'pi sarve vikalmāṣāḥ pariśuddhatrimaṇḍalāḥ ।
śrīmantaḥ sadguṇādhārā bhaveyurbodhimānasāḥ ॥ 7.189 ॥

English

they too, free of stain, their three spheres wholly pure,
glorious, vessels of true virtue, become minds set on awakening.

Purport

The same reward for the listener as for the worshipper. The poem is describing the effect it hopes to have on the person reading it.

na yāyurdurgatiṁ kvāpi sadā sadgatisambhavāḥ ।
sarvasattvahitaṁ kṛtvā saṁcarerañjagaddhite ॥ 7.190 ॥

English

They shall not go to an evil destiny anywhere, but are always born in fortunate states;
doing good to all beings, they move for the welfare of the world.

तिनीहरू कतै दुर्गतिमा जानेछैनन्, सधैँ सद्गतिमा जन्मिन्छन्;

Purport

The guarantee extended to the audience of the poem itself.

tataḥ sarvādhipāste syurdharmārthasaṁprapūrakāḥ ।
bodhisaṁbhāraṁ saṁpūrya saṁbuddhapadamāpnuyuḥ ॥ 7.191 ॥

English

Then they become lords of all, fulfillers of Dharma and of aim,
and completing the accumulations for awakening, reach the state of a Perfect Buddha.

Purport

Dharma and artha together, as this poem always pairs them.

iti satyaṁ parijñāya bauddhaṁ padaṁ yadīcchatha ।
etān devān samārādhya bhajadhvaṁ sarvadā bhave ॥ 7.192 ॥

English

Knowing this truth, if you desire the state of the Buddha,
propitiate these deities and worship them always, in every life.

Purport

The instruction turns to the listener directly, conditional as always.

etatpuṇyānubhāvena yūyamapyevamābhavam ।
durggatiṁ naiva yāyāta kadācitkutraciddhruvam ॥ 7.193 ॥

English

By the power of that merit you too, in every life,
shall never go to an evil destiny at any time or anywhere.

Purport

Addressed in the second person, which the poem reserves for the closing verses of a teaching.

sadā sadgatisaṁjātā bhadraśrīsadguṇāśrayāḥ ।
bodhisattvā mahāsattvā bhavata bodhicāriṇaḥ ॥ 7.194 ॥

English

Always born in fortunate states, vessels of glory and true virtue,
become Bodhisattvas, great beings, walkers of the path to awakening.

Purport

An imperative rather than a prediction. The poem is telling its readers to become this, not merely promising that they will.

tataḥ saṁbodhisaṁbhāraṁ pūrayitvā yathākramam ।
trividhāṁ bodhimāsādya saṁbuddhapadamāpsyatha ॥ 7.195 ॥

English

Then, fulfilling the accumulations for awakening in due order,
attaining the threefold awakening, you shall reach the state of a Perfect Buddha.

Purport

The last of the promises, in the words the poem has used at the end of every chapter.

iti matvātra ye lokā vāñchanti saugataṁ padam ।
tāndevān sagaṇānsarvān samārādhya bhajantu te ॥ 7.196 ॥

English

Knowing this, those people here who desire the state of the Sugata,
let them propitiate all these deities with their companies and worship them.

Purport

The final instruction, and it points at five small chambers built into a hillside.

ityādiṣṭaṁ munīndreṇa niśamya te sabhāśritāḥ ।
sarve tatheti vijñapya prābhyanandan prabodhitāḥ ॥ 7.197 ॥

English

Hearing this instruction of the Lord of Sages, those gathered in the assembly,
all saying so be it, rejoiced and were awakened.

Purport

The assembly is gladdened, as it is at the end of all seven chapters.

tadā śāntaśriyā yaṁssaṁ guptikṛto jinālayaḥ ।
ityādiśya munīndro'pi samādhiṁ viddhekṣaṇam ॥ 7.198 ॥

English

Thus by Śāntaśrī was the abode of the Jina made concealed.
Having so instructed, the Lord of Sages entered into meditation.

Purport

The chapter's last line has the Buddha stop speaking and go into meditation, which no other chapter does. Between the first verse and this one a king of Bengal has given away a kingdom, failed at solitude, walked the length of India, found a hill, and hidden the brightest thing on it so that it would survive. (The closing line is rough in the manuscript and the reading is uncertain.)

iti śrīsvayaṁbhūdharmmadhātuvāgīśvara guptikṛta pravarttano nāma saptamo'dhyāyaḥ samāptaḥ ।

Thus ends the seventh chapter, called the account of the concealment of the glorious Swayambhu Dharmadhātu Vāgīśvara.
